...are they any good? I was getting my guitar strung today and I saw a couple hanging up for under $300...and I thought, "hmm...maybe I should take up bass."
So, are Johnson and/or Slammer brand basses any good?
my neighbor has slammer. granted its more of a low end model, but just looking at them Im sure you could do much better for $300.
for example, a made in mexico (MIM) fender jazz bass. cort basses are really well made too, but some tend to be pricier than $300 new, so the used market would be ideal.

I've never heard of slammer before.
I played a johnson p-bass once. I'm not a fan of p-basses in general. It wasnt particularly good, but it wasnt particularly bad either.
In that price range though, the used market might be a better choice.
Look into a used mexican Fender (i prefer jazz, but some people swear by precisions). You could also probably get a decent ibanez in that range, or a Cort curbow.
If you insist on going new, I've heard pretty good things about OLP basses. Also, I'm not sure, but Ibanez and Yamaha may have something around $300 and their stuff is generally fairly nice.

I really don't like the P-bass myself, especially rip-offs.
What exactly are you looking for?

Welcome, Trilemma, to your humble forum.
Anyway, mod foramlities aside, Slammers are "meh." I highly suggest saving an extra $150 or so and going with a used Standard Fender Jazz or Precision. I suggest these two because they're "standard" basses that have been tested time and time again through the ages and always come out strong. Very solid instruments. I love my Fender J (granted I've modded it a bit), but it was great when it came stock, too.

I don't know :p
It was more of a whim thing...I saw the basses there and was all, "hmmm, I should get a bass."
I really don't want to spend over $400 on something, because I was thinking about getting a new video camera too...but if I can get a solid bass for say $250-350, I'd probably make the purchase.

So a used Fender J would be around $450? I'm guessing a new one would be more like...$600?

well it depends on the make. fender makes basses in mexico (MIM) japan (MIJ, CIJ) or america (MIA), with mexico being the least expensive and american made being the most expensive.
a used MIM jazz/precision should be around 250-400, give or take. a new MIM jazz/precision would probably be somewhere around 300-400 USD.
Though some people tend to be picky about instruments and argue about fender's quality control, MIM basses tend to be solid. of course you will get some bad ones here and there, but for the money theyre extremely solid basses that are awesome for upgrading hardware/electronics or anything else.

^ Bingo!
Nail right on the head.
I say save $150 just incase it's a wee bit more than we bargained for.
Good luck! Hope we helped.
