Voice Recording :-( any takers???

well i have no clue what to do with my voice i tried singing through my diaphram...couldn't find it. Tried doing scales and take breaths or whatever.. my throat hurts... Tried the exhale scream doesn't really sound right and i've checked out a bulliton with some examples by merkaba and i tried what he was doing and it wouldnt work. Im not really comprehending anything im just failing at everything it is kind of disapointing. I really want to sing backup for my band but im in a competition with one of my bandmates and he has everything, new amp new equipment and everything and now he wants to sing, he is really selfish and wont let anybody use his stuff. I feel the most humble because im the best at my instrument which is the bass, and i play guitar and what really sucks is that he can't play guitar that well anyways and he has a bunch of stuff he doesnt diserve i would have played guitar but he really wanted the spotlight and im good at bass. its understandable but i listen to a lot of music everyday from jimi hendrix to the bled to steve ray vauguhn. I really want this to work for me and im sorry if i have to explain this long story my friend is shy and he wont even show anything at practice with his singing and it sucks because i really want to improve before he shows. Im not the best at explaining things but i have sound recorder and i could just record my errors and someone guide me through if its not that much trouble.
