With my experience in music for these past five years, I rarely see a drummer other than myself who plays open handed. WHY????? I started out playing crossed but the better i became I decided to switch it up and I feel more comfortable playing that way. How do you guys play and why?:thumb:

I play crossed

i play crossed, unless its a blast beat on the high hat, then i play open.

Whenever I get the chance I play crossed. Usually if it's 8th or quarter notes on the hihat I'll play open. Or I'll play simple patterns. But when I play Gar Samuelson's stuff... I definitely have to play crossed. But I hope to get up to that Gene Hoglan type of ambidextriousness. (Is that even a word?)

I play crossed. I used to play open when i first got my drums but then i started playing crossed because it was more comfortable for me. I am starting to play a bit more open though so i can be equally good at both. it will take a while though.

i play mostly crossed, but i'm working on open, just so i can say that i can do it, even though i will stick with crossed, sometimes i play open just for effect, like if i'm play along to a Coheed and Cambria song i'll play open because Josh Eppard does. if i had my way i'd get like X-Hats or a remote hi hat pedal and play open with my right hand

I can play both, but play crossed. I'm flirting with the idea of playing an shifted parradiddle on the hats and snare, I'd need/want to play open with that.

So basically, exactly how i play?

I suppose that means technically i play open

I practise both, but am better at crossed at the mo. Eventually i'd just switch to completely open because it frees up my hands more.

Naturally open on hats but had to develop crossed so I could play on the ride properly.

I guess its 50:50 but I play open by choice. :p

I play crossed most of the time. I'm trying to get better at playing open handed, but I have trouble leading with my other hand. Hopefully someday I can get as ambidextrious as I'd like to be.

Crossed my friend. I would like to be able to play open better but, it's so much easier for me right now to play crossed

Crossed all the time unless I want powerful snare hits, then I play open

Crossed for most of the time.

Occasionally I play open, but I can only do basic things like that.

crossed about 3/4 of the time. have to break off the right to play ride notes sometimes

Chrysostom

Crossed because that's how I was taught, and I think it looks better.

^thats the wrong approach, however. iv had times where id groove using open handed, and little guitar center newbs would come and try and take the sticks from me and try and correct me, just from that.

I play upside down

I play crossed because i play mainly trad grip, and even when i'm playing with my rock band and playing match i play crossed.

I play crossed for the most part, I'm trying to work on playing open handed playing though.

I play crossed 90% of the time, I find it more comfortable that way. It really depends on your playing style!

I started playing open-handed a few months ago, and I'll never ever go back. It is an entire new world of drumming to me.

i play open, before i even had my first lesson and i sat down on my kit, i didn't evne consider playing crossed, it just seemed natural to play open. bear in mind i'm a lefty and i set my kit up righty.

open ftw!!!...i have my ride just behind my hats so i play open 100% of the time...

I have the same setup.....ride is behind the hats so I play open 100% of the time. I learned this way because crossed I always felt restricted....like the upper hand playing the hats would be in the way of my lower hand hitting the snare if I wanted to do something with the snare hand quickly. Open allows both hands to feel more free to move around the kit quicker to me.

I never did understand why anyone would want to play crossed. What's the advantage? If there is one I may try and learn it.

Thanks
