I've had my Tama Starclassic Birch Snare just chillin for a while and haven't used it in a bit and the other day I felt like playing with it because it has an awesome crack and well.. Use to be incredibly sensitive. So i put it on the stand n started playing and all my little ghost notes and little rolls sounded 'bongy'. There was basically no sound of the snares. It's not the head because the head all though it hasn't been played in a while the head is pretty much brand new. Still great condition.

So what do I do to get rid of that bongy sound? I've tried so many different tunings of the top and bottom skins and experimenting with the snares. But nothing I do seems to help it. Can you guys please help me? Its really giving me the ****s.

Thanks

P.S the snare still sounds awesome when hit hard but im missing the ability to play quietly.

it could be that the snare wires came loose over time

I would say it was the heads (they, too, become loose over time) but you say you retuned it so yeah...

i say completely remove the heads, check the whole drum over...and replace the heads and retune it...

Yeah, just kinda take it all apart and put it back together, you may not know what's causing it but by properly refitting everything and crap you might just end up fixing whatever it is

Whatever you do don't crank the snare wires down as tight as you can, I notice that seems to be a popular trend and it KILLS the sensitivty and tone of the drum.

Tightening the head is acceptable though right? I love playing with tighter heads because of the sound, but I'm scared it might pop.

As long as it's not choked then sure tight heads are fine.

the wires are either too loose or so tight the dont get any response from soft notes...check your resonant head too...
