I've always wondered what a dulcimer was... They show up a lot in the Wheel of Time series of books, (it's fantasy). Just FYI.

looks like a more primitive form of an autoharp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoharp)

its a zither of some sort, anyway!

They're about 2-2.5 feet long and probably 8 inches wide. There are 4 strings. 2 of them are really close together. The body shape is sort of figure-8-ish (obviously not fully closing in the centre). They are diatonic, so you change tuning for each song. And, you play it with a feather.

Definately not an autoharp, different concept. I do agree its something like a zither though.

Just FYI, the way it works is you press the keys and the little hammer things hit down and kinda keep hitting the strings for a short while. This is the instrument used in the beginning of "Leech" by Incubus on A Crow Left of the Murder.

I'd say some form of a dulcimer. Probably eastern european judging by the design and metal work.

It isn't an autoharp because it doesn't have a chording arm.

It looks like a primitive piano.

A zither is usually plucked with a feather or hit with something... I thought it might be a psaltery but they're usually plucked with the fingers. While a dulcimer is hit with small hammers, it's usually not connected to the sound board. Because of the connected hammers I guess this mystery instrument is closer to some sort of unfretted clavichord because they hit the strings - but most clavichords have keyboards - not buttons.

It's a dulcimer clavichord typewriter mutant!
