View Full Version : *The Video Game Glitches Thread*

I decided to make this because I find one of the funnest things to do after beating a game is discovering all the bugs and glitches in a game. Sure, you could go to CheatCC or Gamefaqs to find Cheat Codes and all that jazz, but sometimes you can trigger glitches without any effort. This is where you can postem'.
It can be from any game of course, it seems N64 games are the glitchiest, so if you know any cool tricks of the trade with video games, you know what to do. Let's see how this does.
*BTW I searched to see if this was done before/a thread gone bad, and I didn't find anything even close so let me know if this has been done before and if it just causes chaos, though I don't see any reason it would*

I don't mean graphical glitches. I mean like turning invisible/skipping a level by cutting through something/floating/turning the screen upsidedown.

If you drive into this certain part in the Power Plant you fall through the screen and end up in this endless abyss.

One time I was playing Gradius on my SNES, and I accidentally pressed up up, down down left right left right b a and start while I was paused, and when I unpaused I had all my weapons! It was pretty cool.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time v-N64
Swordless Link:
Get to the fight with Ganon's pig form, and as soon as the fight starts, get some distance away from him and drop the bug/fish then pick it up again in the bottle, now you have a bottle with something in it in your hand. get some more distance away from him so he doesn't hit you, then do a backflip (while not locked on to anything). While you are in the air, quickly press the c-button the bottle with the fish/bug in it is equiped to, then while still in the air, press the c-button the bow/hookshot is equiped to. If done correctly, the bow/hookshot will act as an ocarina and you should play the sun's song on it. this will cause the battle to restart with zelda talking, and you will not have the master sword. Engage ganon in combat again then make the bow/hookshot act as an ocarina again and play any warp song. Now you are swordless Link and you are in Hyrule!
Fly Around Hyrule:
First, perform the swordless link glitch with the instructions above. since you can use c-button items on Epona while you are swordless, go anywhere while on epona that has something you can latch the hookshot on. Stop epona and shoot the hookshot at the object. The hookshot will latch on and make the pulling sound, but you will not be pulled off of Epona, get off of epona and the hookshot will make you fly through the air with you controlling links flight path.
Start a new game and instead of getting a sword, go into the lost woods and go to the area that goes to goron city. Since you do not have bombs yet, you must do the Crooked Cartridge glitch. This is done by gently pulling on the left side of the cartridge until the sound becomes distorted. The Crooked Cartridge glitch makes it so there is no clipping and you can walk through the rocks, this puts you in goron city, where you have access to Hyrule field and beyond.
Get the fairy orcarina as an adult:
get a sword and a sheild and beat the first dungeon in a new game. once you have done this, DO NOT EXIT KOKIRI WOODS THE NORMAL WAY (going into Hyrule field). Instead, Do the Crooked Cartridge glitch mentioned above and exit into Goron City via. the lost woods. since you have no ocarina, you need to get your first bottle and put a fish or a bug in it to have an ocarina (it is another glitch, to do it, drop the fish/bug and pick it up with an empty bottle so you have a full bottle in your hand, Then do a backflip while not locked on to anything and press the c-button the bottle with the fish/bug is equiped to in the air, then press the B-button while still in the air and you will "play" the kokiri sword like an ocarina, use this instead of the fairy ocarina). defeat the remaining dungeons and pick up the ocarina of time from the moat when zelda throws it in and go forward in time. Enter Kokiri woods as an adult and the cenimatic will play of saria giving you the fairy ocarina. Now you have the fairy ocarina as an adult.

I know a bunch in Socom II, just because I accidentally found them when I used to play all the time, or was told them by clanmates.
On Crossroads, if you have someone sit on the bottom of the stairs outside the fishmarket, then lay down, take out your pistol, and press left on the d-pad, you'll go through the stairs.

This crooked cartridge glitch also lets you get past the guy blocking the exit to Hyrule field in the beginning, lets you get past mido in the beginning as well as when you return as an adult.
I've also found it helpful in the room in goron city with all of the rocks. Like mentioned above, you can use it to get to the end of the room and open the chests. Then use it again to go back out.
Be Warned!:
Pulling up too much on the cartridge will cause your game to freeze. Make sure to pull it slowly and just enough to make link distorted.

I was playing Gran Turismo once and I was doing some race on the test course.
I smashed one of the opponents into the wall and he went straight through it and dissapeared. About 5 seconds later he comes flying over the top of the outside wall and lands a few seconds infront of me.

In Metroid Prime (GC), essentially every part of the game is a glitch. You can go through a fair amount of the invisible boundries on the levels, and explore all the scenery and the enemies that are behind them.

Super Mario 64: I'm not exactly sure how this works, but there is a way to glitch through locked doors. By grabbing the yellow rabbit in the basement that gives you the star in the basement, and by walking with him while holding onto him, you can push yourself through locked doors somehow. ****WARNING****
THIS TRICK COULD POSSIBLY DELETE YOUR SAVED GAMES, RUIN YOUR CARTRIDGE OR EVEN RENDER YOUR NINTENDO 64 CONSOLE USELESS, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
How to:
This is quite tricky until you get the hang of it.
Very slowly pull out the left side of the cartridge until the sound becomes "fuzzy" or distorted, as soon as it does, stop, at this point the Crooked Cartridge trick is working.
Note: During normal gameplay CC only works well for Deku Link, trying it as any other version of Link crashes the game almost instantly. Standing still while attempting the CC trick will result in an immediate game freeze, regardless of which form of Link you are.
Glitches you can use this for:
48 Ocarinas
How to:
1) You need an empty save file, select it and choose a name.
2) Slowly pull out the left side of the cartridge until the sound becomes distorted, when it does select 'end'.
3) After the game finishes saving the data and takes you back to the select file screen, push the cartridge back in.
4) Select the new game file and open it.
During the starting movie when you see Link, if he has no sword or shield then you have done the trick correctly, if not, try again.
After the starting movie ends Link dies straight away, when you come back you'll notice that Link has no life hearts, he also has no sword or shield.
The item and mask screens are both completely filled with useable, working Ocarinas of Time, when you start you'll have one of these Ocarinas equipped to all three c-buttons (that is, the same Ocarina on all three buttons).
Any writing that appears on the c-buttons or the B button will be rimmed with green instead of black, if you get magic power it will change to black.
After you get turned into a Deku pressing B makes you pull out his pipes, this stops working after you get magic power.
After you've finished talking to the Happy Mask shop man talk to him again and he'll teach you the song of healing straight away because you already have the Ocarina(s) of Time.
If the game tries to give you any health or take any away you'll die.
Destroyed bushes will drop bombs and arrows even though you don't have the Hero's Bow or a Bomb bag, if you collect some dropped bombs they will appear on the item subscreen, even though you don't have a Bomb bag, sometimes you may be able to use these bombs without having the Bomb bag, sometimes you can't. Collecting dropped arrows does not give you the Hero's Bow though.
Any masks you get will overwrite the Ocarina in their place, so will any other items you get except bottles.
Collecting four heart pieces will increase your live by one heart, the first putting you up to a total of one heart container, when you have one heart the game constantly makes the beeping noise that indicates you're almost dead.
If you collect the missing part of the great Fairy then talk to her she'll give you magic power like normal, but, she'll also heal you, this of course kills you and when you come back to life you'll automatically start talking to her and, she'll heal you, you die, come back to life, talk to her etc. You are now stuck in this endless loop and have to turn off the N64 to get out of it.
If you see her after you've got a heart container she'll give you magic like normal and you're free to walk away.
Once you have magic you can take the Bomber's challenge, do so as normal Link and make sure the last Bomber kid you catch is the one in West Clocktown(this might not be necessary). Once you catch the last one the screen fades to white and then freezes, leaving you looking at a white screen, you'll have to reset.
2nd Hero
How to:
1) You need an empty save file, select it and choose a name.
2) Get ready to to the CC trick, but don't do it yet. Select 'end' and then about 1/10th of a second later (basically straight away) pull the side of the cartridge out. Once the data has finished saving push the cart back in.
3) Select the new save file (assuming the game didn't freeze while it was saving) and start it.
Now, there are four things that can happen:
A) The screen fades to black then crashes with the red debug line visible.
This probably means you pulled the cartridge out slightly too early.
B) The game starts and when you see Link he has neither the sword nor shield.
You must have just pulled the cartridge out way too early, what you've done its the 48 Ocarinas trick.
C) The game starts exactly like a normal game, nothing appears to be different.
This happens a lot and means that you pulled the catridge out a little too slow, probably.
or:
D) The game starts and when you see Link he has a shield and an empty sword scabbard.
Yell and scream with irrepressible joy! You've done it! Congratulations! Now don't turn off the N64! Because the save file disappears when the N64 is turned off.

A lengthy list of some things that are altered in this game:
On the map subscreen you can see the whole world map, you also have the maps for all areas although a lot of the time they are faded or not visible until the game is paused.
When you get up to the point where Tatl comes after you and joins you, most of the time she won't, Tatl just stays sitting by the wooden door. Sometimes she will join you though, if she does the game world will be slightly different.
If Tatl doesn't join you, as a Deku, if you don't have Deku Nuts, when flying the 'B' button will have scrambled pixels displayed on it or some sort of weird glitch symbol.
If Tatl doesn't join you all chests in the game will already be open. If Tatl does join you all the chests in the game may be open, or they may be closed.
All (or some) of the Clocktown guards will be gone if you didn't get Tatl, if you did they will most probably all be there.
Talk to the man in either of the shooting galleries and after you've finished talking (you can't play) he'll tell you it's closing time and boot you out, regardless of the actual time.
The Deku scrub salesman in the flower near the Clocktower is the one from the swamp, all the Deku salesmen in the game are switched around as though you had already done the title deed trading sequence.
The missing part of the Clocktown Great Fairy will not be anywhere, if you visit the Great Fairy it may turn out that you do actually have the missing part with you (or you may not) if you do you'll receive magic power like normal, except that the magic meter is already flashing blue as though you had drunk some Château Romani, and indeed, you do have infinite magic.
If you talk to any of the Bomber kids they will remind you that the code is: /////
If you talk to the Banker he will inform you that you have deposited a total of: ///// rupees, by talking to the banker you'll also discover that your name is "00000000". If you try to deposit any rupees you can't, because your account is full. If you attempt to withdraw any rupees, after choosing how many you want to take you'll get stuck on a screen with the banker saying something, various parts of his text can be changed from 0 to 9 as though you were still selecting how many rupees you wanted, you have to reset to get out of this so I don't suggest you do it.
If you didn't get Tatl the rock blocking access to Romani Ranch will probably be gone from day one. If you did, it might be gone or it might not.
Wait at the ranch until the aliens come and they'll just sit there not moving until eventually the sun kills them, an easy win. Wait at the ranch until the night of the second day and the game will freeze showing a picture of you (Deku Link) on Cremia's cart. You have to reset.
Wait somewhere that isn't the ranch until the night of the second day then enter the ranch, the cinema showing you riding on Cremia's cart will start playing straight away. When you get out onto Milk road Cremia's cart will disappear, quickly enter the Gorman Bros' Race Track and you'll be back on the cart, Cremia will give you her little spiel about using your bow (Hello? Deku here!), then you'll be protecting the cart from the Gorman Bros as Deku Link, pressing 'B' makes you shoot an arrow out of your mouth, the really cool thing is that the arrows shoot as fast as you can press the 'B' button. When you reach the end of the Race Track instead of the screen fading to black and then showing you and Cremia in Termina Field the game keeps on going, Cremia's cart drives off the edge of the Race Track and starts falling through the space below it, with you in the back. Keep looking up at the Race Track and you'll see the two Gorman Bros fall past you, horseless, keep watching and you'll see them fall past again and again and again, faster and faster each time until you can't see them anymore. You'll just keep on falling forever so you'll need to reset.
On the night of any day the Postman will be standing by the exit to Termina Field in East Clocktown, talk to him and he'll give you the Postman's hat before merrily skipping away.
All heart pieces have been replaced with life hearts.
Wait until the moon hits the earth, you start back on the first day and you'll have changed back into normal Link, without the Deku mask.
Make your way up to the Mountain village smithy and you'll find the big guy banging on the Razor sword, talk to him, come back the next day and talk to him again to receive the Gilded sword!
With the Gilded sword you can 'activate' Owl statues, if you save at one, when you get back to the select file screen the save game will be gone.
All of the four "cursed areas" are uncursed, as though the four dungeons had already been done (e.g.: the swamp is not poisonous, the mountain village is unthawed etc.).
Wait until midnight of the 3rd day as normal Link and then go to the top of the Clocktower, the imp will give you his little speech about "if this is something that can be stopped then stop it" and then sit there shaking in midair. The strange thing is that the moon is already really really close and the four giants are standing around it holding it up, as though you'd only summoned some of them. The moon still hits the earth though.
There are a lot more things that are different that I haven't mentioned here, but I think I've covered all the major ones.
Although the game doesn't seem to be saved you can in fact load a 2nd hero game after having turned the N64 off and on. Simply perform the 48 Ocarinas glitch over the file that was the 2nd hero one, load the file and it'll be the 2nd hero one.
This trick can be very hard to do.
Bowless Link
How to:
1) Start a new file.
2) Play through the first part until you get your Ocarina back and are normal Link again.
3) On the first day go to Milk road, go up to the boulder blocking the road and go to it's left side, right up against the wall.
4) Put on the Deku mask.
5) Face the wall, press and hold Z, and start sidestepping towards the boulder.
6) While still sidestepping, very slowly pull up the left side of the cartridge until Deku Link starts glitching around.
7) Deku Link will start sidestepping straight through the boulder, go about halfway through then push the cartridge back in, you'll be forced out of the boulder and onto the other side of it.
8) Enter Romani Ranch.
9) Turn back into normal Link then go and talk to Romani, accept her offer of being a sidekick so that you have to do the training.
10) Once the training starts just sit around on Epona until the two minutes are up (you can't shoot the balloons because you don't have the Bow).
Once the time runs out Romani will teach you Epona's Song, you now have Epona but no bow, so when you get on Epona the B button will be blank, once you get off her it will be blank too (traveling back in time gets the sword back).
11) Now go and get either the Blast mask, the Breman mask or Kamaro's mask. You want one of these ones because when you put them on they put a "behavior" on the 'B' button.
12) Call Epona, put on one of the masks and then climb on her, you can now use the B command while on Epona (explode, dance or march).
Using the Blast mask you can explode while running around on Epona, which, other than that it doesn't hurt you, is rather pointless.
Using 'dance' or 'march' makes Link start doing so in midair, while Epona continues running. You are now in control of Epona while Link is standing in midair somewhere running on the spot (or dancing/marching if you're still holding B).
After you've danced or marched pressing A will make Link remount Epona.
If you dance or march near an enemy and then make Link lock onto it when he is standing in midair, pressing A will have no effect on him. He is frozen, sidestepping, in midair.
While you are in control of just Epona she cannot leave or enter any areas, what this means is that you can go into the part of an area that normally loads the next place, but it won't, you can just trot around in these "loading areas".
The only place where this is of any "use" is the exit from the Gorman Bros' racetrack to Milk Road.
Go to the racetrack then dance or march on Epona, now guide Epona out into the "loading area", once you get around the corner you'll find that the ground ends abruptly, the interesting thing is that Epona can just walk off into space (no other "loading area" in the game lets you do this).
Once you walk off into space Epona will start falling, you can still run around in the air though. If you press A to make Link mount Epona he will, then he'll fly off the top of the screen and Epona off the bottom and you'll start back at the racetrack entrance.
If you just run around as Epona eventually the camera will zoom up into the sky and with a bit of maneuvering you can make the camera appear right next to the moon.
After running around in space for a few minutes the game will crash, this seems to be unavoidable.
Corrupted File
How to:
1) You need an empty save file and one with a saved game. Choose 'copy' on the select file screen.
2) Choose to copy the saved game to the empty file.
3) Before you choose 'yes' to start copying pull up the left side of the cartridge, then choose 'yes'.
Once the file is copied it shows all the data for the new file, this will be very corrupted, often the name of the file is 0000000, or it will say you have all 24 masks (regardless of how many the original save file has), the number of hearts can screw up too.
Unfortunately if the new file's name is different to that of the original the new file will be removed.
If you then perform the 48 Ocarinas trick on the slot where the copied file was you may be able to play the corrupted game, often nothing in game will be different though.

Free Deku
How to:
1) Start and play a new game until you reach Clocktown as Deku Link.
2) Go to one of the guards and stand immediatly in front of him.
3) Start running into the guard, while you are doing so pull up the left side of the cartridge, push A and then push the cartridge back in.
If done correctly the game will not crash, the guard will say what he normally does except that there will be a picture of the All Night mask in the left side of his text box. Once he has finished speaking he will be frozen in place, you can now walk straight past him out into Termina Field.
Alternately, you can sidestep between the guard and the wall by using the same method used to go between the boulder and wall in the Bowless Link trick.
Passwordless
How to:
1) As Deku Link stand to the left or right of the Bomber Kid guarding the entrance to the Observatory.
2) Turn 90° to the left or right so that your side is facing towards him.
3) Start sidestepping into the small gap between him and the wall.
4) While sidestepping pull out the left side of the cartridge.
With any luck you'll be aligned correctly and will go straight between the kid and the wall, if so, romp off to the Observatory. It's more likely though that you'll hit the wall or slow down, causing the game to instantly crash.
Kegless
How to:
1) As Deku Link stand to the left or right of the boulder blocking entrance to the Goron racetrack.
2) Align yourself so that you are facing sideways towards the area where the wall and the boulder meet.
3) Start sidestepping into this area and while doing so pull up the left side of the cartridge.
4) You should go straight through the boulder and into the area behind, quickly push the cartridge back in before the screen starts to fade.
You'll now be in the racetrack area, it's no different to what it is like if you enter it using a Powder Keg though.
60Hz for PAL
How to:
1) Turn on the game.
2) Press start twice to load the file select screen.
3) As soon as the file select screen begins to fade in (before any music starts playing) perform the CC trick.
If done correctly the game will switch to 60Hz mode, but will play no sounds or music.
If you want to try and play in 60Hz with sound use this method:
1) As Deku Link go somewhere and run around.
2) While running around do the CC trick.
Very very rarely this will cause the game to start running at 60Hz, instead of the usual PAL 50Hz.
The game will now run 17% faster and if you have an older, non NTSC compatible TV, the onscreen picture will start to flicker very badly. The game works perfectly fine apart from those things. To return it to PAL signal turn the N64 off then on again.
Also, almost all the time when the game crashes, for whatever reason, the signal will change to 60Hz.
PAL FD Link
How to:
1) Open up a save file.
2) Put on the Deku mask and play the Song of Time to save the game.
3) Reset and return to the file select screen.
4) Choose to copy the file you just saved.
5) Select 'yes' to begin copying the file and immediately perform the Crooked Cartridge trick(See bottom of the page for more details*).
6) Once the file is finished copying the name should be the same! If so then push the cartridge back in and load the file.
When the screen showing the clocktower comes up, the magic meter, B icon and rupee counter will be visible. Once you gain control of Deku Link you shouldn't be able to see the A or c-button icons. The magic meter should also be flashing blue and you'll have infinite magic. You can now use any item that is equipped to a c-button. Some items could crash the game if you try to use them.
Once you've used an item, or if you leave the area or pause the game you won't be able to use any more items.
Obviously the major use for this is to have the FD mask equipped and change into him. Once you do so he'll have the bow equipped to B and will automatically take it out. To get rid of this hold Z and sidestep your way to Honey & Darling's game shop. Once you enter you should have Bombchus on B, exit then pause and unpause the game to get your sword there.
If you instead change into any other form of Link you'll find they have the Bow on B as well. Pressing B as Goron Link will either crash the game or make it start running at about 1 fps for around 30 seconds before crashing.
Once you turn the game off, when you get back to the select file screen the file will be gone, you can load it again by performing the 48 ocarinas trick on the empty slot where it was though.
Things to do as FD Link.
* To help you understand what you're trying to do here's an explanation of the game's saving system as I understand it.
When you start a new file or copy an existing one, one of the first things saved is the file's name, the game then saves the contents of the quest subscreen, then the mask and item screens. What you need to realise is that all this information is saved in the first half a second of the saving process, I don't know what it saves after that, but it spends a long time doing it.
When you do this trick what you're aiming to do is perform the Crooked Cartridge trick after the game has saved the file's name, but before it has saved the quest subscreen, this means you're aiming to perform the CC trick about a tenth of a second after you press A to begin saving.
Seeing as you probably can't tell when exactly to perform the CC trick, becuase of the very small time window, what you should do is press A and perform the CC trick at the same time. Then, if the file copies and the name is different, the number of bosses' remains you have is different or the number of heart pieces you have is different, you know you're doing it slightly too early, if the file copies and is perfectly normal then you know you're doing it too late.
****REMEMBER THAT THESE GLITCHES CAN DO POTENTIAL HARM TO YOUR GAME CARTRIDGE/N64 SO DON'T GO BLAMING ME IF YOU TRY THESE GLITCHES AND YOUR SYSTEM NO LONGER WORKS****

Oh, for Zelda: MM, there's a glitch that lets you ride Epona in the town, and there's another one that lets you wear the Fierce Deity's Mask in town too. It's pretty cool. It actually works too because I've done it. The Fierce Deity one can freeze up your game though.

socom 2:
online cheats:
shoot gun while still on back: ok, you need to be in a level with at-4s and rpgs, so choose your main gun, pistol and make sure you have an at-4/rpg and claymores/mines... that out your main gun(make sure it's your quick 1 or 2) then take out your pistol, then at-4/rpg, then claymores/mines, then walk forward and while you're walking press your "quick" for your main gun, you should be holding your pistol, but have it say you're holding your main gun out, when you shoot, your gun on your back will shoot, but the shots will come out of the pistol,

There was a glitch in GoldenEye 64 where you could blow up the TVs in mulitplayer and somehow all mines and explosive projectiles would end up floating, instead of being thrown/shot.

NFL 2k for the sega dreamcast had the best gltiches ever. Your friend could make this awesome 28 yard play, and then next play you have the ball and you're kicking a field goal for some reason.

Isn't there some trucker game where, when you drive over a bridge, you fall through it forever?
Big Rigs. That entire game is one giant glitch.
The one in Pokemon to get Mew by flying away from some trainer was cool, I can't remember exactly how to do it though.

same diffNo, glitches you have to exploit something in the game to cause it to happen. Codes are something you input to get something.
All I remember is that you had to shoot the TVs in the control room (where you had to find Boris and get the GoldenEye disc), but not blow them up. You had to shoot them so they'd warp to the center of the 4 TV support and have them all blow up.
I wish I remembered the exact way to set up the floating explosives glitch.

but anyway... theres a glitch in socom 2 where (online) you can have your gun shoot out of your head... haha
ok, so you make your main gun the quick 1, and you urn up to a box or a ledge that you can climb, you walk up, and at the same time (or a little bit of a delay between) press square and R1, if you do it right, you should be holding out your pistol, but be able to shoot your main gun, and it will look like the shots are comming out your head...

and i know a way for your guy to have seizers... or just shake alot when you're in crouch... ok so you first have to get a silenced main weapon (i.e. m4a1 sd, hk5sd, 552sd, that stuff) then you have to do this glitch
shoot gun while still on back: ok, you need to be in a level with at-4s and rpgs, so choose your main gun, pistol and make sure you have an at-4/rpg and claymores/mines... that out your main gun(make sure it's your quick 1 or 2) then take out your pistol, then at-4/rpg, then claymores/mines, then walk forward and while you're walking press your "quick" for your main gun, you should be holding your pistol, but have it say you're holding your main gun out, when you shoot, your gun on your back will shoot, but the shots will come out of the pistol,
then crouch and fire 1 shot with your gun on automatic, and your guy will start shaking... its the weirdest thing, but it wears off if you turn sharply, or die, or switch weapons... but it's fun while it lasts, haha

Oh, on Golden Eye, there's a glitch to get 2 different guns at the same time. It has something to do with switching, shooting, and good timing.

On Mario Kart 64, there are 2 jumps to be made to your advantage. One is definately not meant to be there, one might be.
Wario Stadium: At the very start of the track there are humps. Use them to jump over the left hand wall, cutting half of the track. Definately a glitch as the screen flashes black. When done in multiplayer only your portion flashes black.
Rainbow Road. At the very start, at the top of the gian hill, you can jump the fence on the left and, if timed right, land on the part of track you can see. No black screen flashing.

Those were cool. I remember doing those. The Rainbow Road one is hard on the second lap though.
Also in the one with the snow and the bridge, there's a trick that lets you not really do a lap, but you get credit for one. I forgot how to do it though. It requres jumping though.
