Hello,
i am having problems with denting heads, is their any reason this may be happening? it's mainly my two rack toms. they are set-up at a fairly low angle, about 15 degrees angled towards me, could this be the problem, or is it something else, they are only stock heads by the way.
thanks

It could very well be the technique you use.

It could be technique. It might also be your sticks. I have some VF 5A's and the tips are chipped off so its like the shape of a flat head screw driver. I'm not sure if this will dent my heads, but I'm gonna get new sticks as soon as possible.

If you have stick heads than that could be a reason because my stock heads dented SOOO easily!!

Actually I haven't played bass for more then a half an hour in about 3 or 4 month. I feel much more at home behind my kit.

I have stock heads that have yet to dent. I don't think I've ever dented a head, and I hit quite hard.
Edit - To above - thats good to hear man glad you found a great intrument. I mean what good is it hitting a bass with sticks?

Its either one of three things (or a combination of some/all):
Your tom angles are angled too much toward you
Your technique needs looking at
Stock heads are crap anyway.
Try changing the tom batters and if you still get dents its either your technique or your angles.

stock heads are usually cheaper versions of actual heads, so that will most likely be the problem, other than the angle your hitting the drum.

Could how tight his heads are tuned affect the denting?

Loose toms + steep angles = Dents and pitting.

i have ****e stock heads on 1 drum, better stock heads on another, and remo heads on another. the denting is equivalent to the quality of head

Although, i was the n00biest drummer ever, so it could be the fact my toms were angled at terribly :upset:

thanks for all your help, i don't think it would be the angle of my toms as they are close to flat.... i wouldn't be surprised if it was my technique, though and does the tightness affect it? they are quite tightly tuned....
thanks

i used some sticks with REALLY REALLY small ball heads, and had my toms angled quite a bit.
it took me less than 30 mins to dent my tom and snare stock heads.
but since i changed my heads, sticks and of course tom angles, my toms and snares have no dents or pits in em. only lots of stick marks. :P

Tony Levin does.
My stock heads dented in about an hour, but then, I sucked alot more when I had them than I do now.
I still dent a head very rarely, I usually take that as the time to change them out.

Using the stick in a stabbing motion can cause denting too, incase you're accidentally doing this.

steep angles are the number #1 killer of heads.....
also check out technique, and perhaps your sticks.....
2 ply heads, I have found by playing on my bassist's brother's drumset, dent less. When he had 1 ply stock heads, he dented those things so easily. The 2 plies took a long time before he started denting them.
I myself have never dented a head. I had a couple small dents on my coated amb on my snare, but that was all, and on the current snare head (I've had on for about 4 months) no dentage of anykind, which means my technique has improved!

Loose toms + steep angles x bad technique = Dents and pitting.

It's normal, right, to have marks on one's clear toms?

I had a dent on my floortom-head...but that was because of my bad technique...which improved a lot :)

Yeah, sticks generally leave marks. Very normal.

ya, your probably hitting them on a sharp angle, try hitting the toms lighter/losser, and get yourself some brand heads

They'll dent even if you have perfect technique. Super loose heads and steep angles = dent land.

Any sharp angle between stick and skin will dent it. It's that easy.

jeez it's the stock heads...no need to get technical sying he has bad technique and what not....get new heads you'll see that was the problem...

no i don't have pics, sorry, my camera is broken, but it only started when i angled my toms so i think that this may be the problem, i changed them for about half an hour or so and they were dented and then i changed them back and haven't had any more dents (that i can notice) anymore,
thanks
