I hate long finger nails. The sound of them scraping against my strings drives me crazy.
I always have long nails, but that's cuz I was really girly for a while and got used to them being really long and now when they break I feel like about 1/4" of my fingers are missing. This creates problems with my fretting hand as I have to position my fingers so that the pad of my finger presses the string but the nail doesn't get in the way. I'm alright as long as I keep them around 1/8". Currently, my ring and pinky finger nails are like 1/4" long though. My "picking" hand (I don't use picks) has all 1/8" nails right now because I broke them a few weeks ago. I don't really use them when I play very much, at least not intentionally. I just like how they look long and I can't pick flat objects up without them so I have to keep my nails long.

i dont rlly grow them out but i do use em to play alot. like two fingerstyle but i hit the nail on the up stroke, im still working on perfecting it on the higher strings but when played fast enuff it blends rlly well and u dont get so much of a ping sounds more like open harmonic with more clarity if that makes sense.

I have average hands with tapered artistic fingers with large knuckles and really fat pads on the ends and bitten off finger nails. the only thing that gets in the way is my palm is wider than is proportionate to the rest of my hand.

I hate the sound of my nails hitting the strings, so as soon as they start to get long again, I cut them. In fact, I'm going to cut them now.
If you've lucky Naveed, I might take a picture of them. :naughty:

I have long, skinney fingers, and I let the nails on my index and middle fingers (right hand) grow just a bit longer than my other nails, so I can get a more agressive attack on the strings. It sounds almost like using a pick, but I still get to use my fingers.

I have pretty long nails for a guy, but they look nice. I keep the middle and index fingers on my right hand cut to where there about an eighth of an inch of white, that's just enough not to hit the strings when I play. Also, that length allows me to use my index fingernail as a pick. I'd probably have better fretting technique if I had shorter nails, but it doesn't cause me any problems.

If you'll notice, I'm making an offense gesture ;)
perhaps it demonstrates my feelings for this thread, perhaps not. It means whatever you want it to mean.

Oh, I though peace was "two fingers raised but with the palm facing forwards".
You see here, it is an insult that dveloped from the mocking gestures English soldiers made to French soldiers, who, apart from being reknonwed cowards, were also awful archers.
They often lost their finger tips through poor archery technique, whereas the English had good technique and so could often be seen mockingly "giving the rods".
Nowadays, it is quite a crude insult.

That is news to me. Cool!
That would be an interesting website. What different hand gestures mean around the world and how they came to be. I think I may start making that site.

I have pretty crazy huge hands. I've sized my hands up with like 90% of the people I've ever met, and they have never been beaten, only tied by a few people, most of them being over 6'6, while I am only 6'0, maybe 6'1. I also got crazy big feet (size 15). My hands, after testing this, are pretty much the size of my girlfriends feet. So, i think she's like a womens 8 1/2 or something.
As for the nails, I try and keep em as short as possible. Depending on the amount I play my bass, they get pretty trimmed just playing, but mainly thats only my right hand because I play some stuff similar to Claypool when I just fiddle around in my room.
