Yeah, get one of those. They look really nice too. They have a Fender-inspired design, but they're better.
Or, go ye ol' Ibanez low-end Soundgear. Very sleek basses, very easy to play.

not really. theyre more Ernie Ball inspired, considering that theyre the exact design of a MM. OLP's are pretty good and are generally overlooked.

to go guitar shops, pick a few up and play them. pick something that makes you want to play. in my opinion, it's best to start with something that feels good to you instead of something that other people say is 'good'. check out pawn shops, a lot of times an old instrument (even one that isn't good) has something of a 'mojo' that just makes you want to play...maybe that's just me tho :)

Yeah I know, but I keep seeing Fender influence in the Stingrays. Body shape is similar, necks are similar, headstock is similar but an obvious improvement...

I still think it was funny, at the local music shop, I wanted to try some basses. I brought mine along in its flight case. Looking at the OLP's... "These look nice, how much are they?" "$500 mate, great value." "Yeah, they look like a good instrument."
So I opened up my case, pull out the natural ash '94 Stingray... "Wow... you've got a real one!"

1) Go to three different music shops.
2) Play all their basses in your price range.
3) Narrow it down to 2-4, ask on here, see if our opinions match yours, and buy.
If you know a price range, we can recommend something...

I'd say even though people dis-aggre that Squeir Bronco bass is a decent playing beginining bass that sounds nice, plays great and is nice on the wallet ( ranging from about £90 - £120 ) However the scale of it is made to suit a guitar player I still found it made for an exellent begining bass. Peavy Milestone 3 is also a nice bass to start with although a little more pricey the Peavy offers a fuller scale and sounds just as nice. Even if not considering the two it would be worth playing them, there nice little things.
Hope this helps!

No, squiers make for decent starter basses. I started on one and it was a great bass to learn on.
