So would you suggest shelling out $12 for it?

Another one I've been wondering about is this guy named Aaron Sprinkle. I went to purevolume and heard the song "Really Something," which is the only one he has posted. Anyone else have any info on him?

Better modern day melodic hardcore/screamo - esque (**** genres) redone cover

White Wedding - Billy Idol

or

Radar Love - Golden Earring

I wasn't even trying to change his opinion. I only said that because I presume he was referring to my claim that my cover is better than an original and I think that turning things into melo-hardcore often reduces their original beauty.

Your opinion just ceased to matter since you take things out of context. :thumb:

ITRIEDVOODOOONCE

maybe we could all calm down and stop the attacks. All i was saying is that i am currently doing vocals for a melodic hardcore/metalcore blah blah blah band, and we are deciding what to do a rendition of, not attempting to do better than the original, but to compliment it by putting our own spin on it. I was just wonder which one you think would cross over better to the genre.

Littlejohn
01-15-2006, 06:06 PM
Well, I'm a bit on edge today. Scene kids have gotten under my skin as of recently.

Scene Kid - "What type of music are you guys doing for Battle of the Bands?"

Me - "I'm not very good at classifying genres..."

SK - "So does it sound like Comeback Kid or Norma Jean?"

Me - "...neither?"

SK - "OH, well you guys must blow."

ITRIEDVOODOOONCE
01-15-2006, 06:21 PM
Agreed, but then again its not a crime to like the music, im not scene, but i like anything that doesnt sound generic.

Apologies for earlier, LittleJohn.
Voodoo,I'm not familiar with either song but good luck with those. I'd go with Radar Love because that sounds like it has crossover potential and sounds very un-metalcore-ish which probably means it'll be a more interesting cover. idk.

I played in a couple hardcore bands for a few months because I liked the energy but the music never did do it for me and I couldn't help the guys with the songwriting cos of it.

White Wedding was redone very badly by the Murderdolls I believe.

Anyway, as White Wedding suits the harsh vocals of hardcore/metalcore/whatever a bit more I say go with the other one.

Uggghhh....metal. I'm sorry, but that genre just seems to completely suck as of recently. Some of the classic metal is still good (Judas Priest, Metallica, and the like) but anything past circa 1999 is pretty much crap. The only thing I admire about some of the more recent metal bands is the technical proficiency of some of their guitarists. I hate most of the vocalists though. Therefore, if I'm in the mood for some kickass guitar playing, I opt for Joe Satriani. No useless screaming/shrieking/gargling/whatever, just good guitar playing.

Screaming is only tolerable in small doses and if it's not done off-key, which a lot of new metal bands can't seem to grasp. Other genres that use screaming seem to be able to do it somewhat melodically. Thrice, anyone? Even other not-so-good bands like Silverstein manage to make it sound a notch just above complete a$s. Metal bands...eh, not so much.

Ok first of all i'll say that i somewhat agree with Yngwie, I think he's really talented but he's way too repetitive, and a lot of his stuff is the same type of music, scales and pentatonics, etc... he never varies it really... Joe satriani i disagree with you on that. I think he's amazingly talented, when I hear him play i really feel that he almost sings through his guitar, yeah, simple chord arrangements but its all about the feel.

Disco Donkey:

I agree with you that some bands just scream for the sake of screaming, I sometimes enjoy just a basic scream on some heavy songs. Thrice is great they are great at screaming and singing, but i think find sometimes It's too much and i'd rather just listen to a growl and some wicked guitar.

Yngwie is worse than joe I agree. All he tends to do is play scales fast.
Metal is doing ok atm like it always will, it's metalcore that's dying in the pits.

And sometimes screaming or "singing" off key can be used for an artisitic effect like Converge for example. But Converge are the only ones who do that well anyway as far as I can tell.

Screaming (or even singing) off-key can be used to add to the artistic impression of the song. However, too many bands--mostly metal bands--that I've heard lately don't do it for any sort of artistic reason, they just do it to sound fashionable and end up sounding ridiculous. Let's take Slipknot, my favorite "metal" punching bag: when they sing, they're decent; when they scream, they're obnoxious and lame.

To much screaming and all that.

I don't mind it. For instance, I dislike listening to DEP because of the senseless screaming (at times), I can't stand it a lot, at least using earphones.

Other than that I'm pretty receptive of music. That can't even be put into that label, you know, it's not not accepting...

1. I wasn't aware calling someone pretentious made you pretentious, but okay.
2. It's called an opinion.
3. Once again, apparently having an opinion is pretentious.
4. I have no idea what you're getting at, so whatever.

I think the point is you state your opinion as though it were fact. This other guy may be a pretentious idiot, while you are no idiot. Who should we expect to hold a higher standard?

Okay, so apparently I need to say "I think" or "in my opinion" before every single thing I say from now on pertaining to my thoughts on things.

No thanks.

(I think) it's stupid to have to state that I'm stating my opinion in order to not look "pretentious" (in my opinion).

1. You sound pretentious for some reason, I have no real argument for this or anything so just ignore it.
2. What do you mean, your opinion? I don't get it.
3. Geez, calm down dude, I'm above arguing because I'm cool and such.
4. You just don't understand me because it lets you get out of arguing with me I bet.
Oh okay.

1 My comments may come off as crass and rude because I simply dont know any better
2. I'm a teenager (well, mentally) therefore I still know everything.
3. I sometimes strike out at others cuz of the inadaquate size of my penis

I like Tool. Maynard doesn't just sing about what Subtledagger said. Most of his stuff in APC is different and expressed on a more personal level. Take "The Noose", "3 Libras" and "Magdalena" for example.

SubtleDagger

"3 Libras" is typical angsty stuff. It sounds like it could be written by a teenager.

What? I'd hardly call 3 libras an angst ridden song. Maybe you're thinking of Judith maybe?

Hey, hey, hey. Are you insulting my Bush? How dare you! Actually, they were the only good band to come out of that whole post-grunge era thing. So, I somewhat agree with you. Therefore, you cannot smash my head in with a hammer. At least, not yet.

It will probably be closed on Friday.

On another note, I hate stupid people. I'm at work right now and I just want to punch everybody who comes in and doesn't understand the concept of "bouncing checks." If you don't have money in your checking.......DON'T WRITE CHECKS! God, people are idiots.

maybe I'm in the wrong contest...angst seems to be what I got these days...is this the thread where everyone writes happy songs? p.s. is it just me or did about 80% of us immediately relate the word douse to fire...? I solemnly (I know thats spelled wrong..) swear not to be angsty anymore.

Do I have to copy paste the lyrics for you?

They're really typically angsty. They read like high schooler material actually.

Everyone has angst. Maybe that's why it's been done so much. But do you have the talent to make us want to read it? The use of language is an art form you could spend a life time cultivating if you so choose. Build your voacab and use dictionary.com if you need. I solemnly (spelled correctly) swear it will help.

Meh I know the lyrics pretty well. I like Maynards lyrics for the most part even if you do think they're "high schooler material". I've heard worse from other bands I like.
