View Full Version : Tool - Anemia

I'm trying to learn the song but I can't figure out the hihat polyrhythm. At first I thought it was in 5 and 7 but now that I'm listening it seems to be in 6, the whole way through(until the faster opening part). Could someone help me out, just a basic tab.
On a similar note, in schism for the 4 16ths(triplets?) the bass drum is on the first one, is it on the fourth one or the third one, I've been trying it for a while but never got a chance to play it on my set, just hands and feet. I'm trying to figure out anemia now so I don't really wanna listen to schism and waste time on that yet.
Any help would be apreciated in any parts of those 2 songs.

And can someone check if for my definition of a polyrhythm, its when you have 2 or more limbs playing in different time signitures simotainously. Like 5/8 ride pattern over 4/4 on snare and bass.

That was nice. You shouldn't be one talking about spelling and grammer, go back to second grade, capital letters begin sentences.

It really isn't too hard(at least I don't it is, never played it on the set just tap along but thats how I ussually learn songs, sort of play along on the practice pad, tap it during boring school classes then at the end of the week when I finnally have time to play my set I'm able to play it). I think the hardest part(exept for the speed in some songs) is the counting since its polyrhythmic and staying focused because in music like that if you drop the beat it will take a while to find it.
I figured out the schism thing, its an eighth note. Kinda hard to play I can't get it on my practice pad, I can play it tapping hands and feet so I should be able to get it soon.

it would be cool if you could define the part you are talking about more (a time mark would be very helpful).

I would see the crescendo thing as 6/8 and the following part with the offbeat hi-hats as 12/16 (referring to the 4/4 triplet feel which is usually transcribed in 12/8, but you see that this part is in eights the whole way through, so you have to double time it).

C |------------|------------|------------|------------|
H |-x-x-x-d-x-x|-x-x-x-d-x-X|-x-xxx-x-xxx|-x-xxx-d-x-X|

- |1+a2+a3+a4+a|1+a2+a3+a4+a|1+a2+a3+a4+a|1+a2+a3+a4 +a|

you see how the backbeats fall on 2 and 4? I think that would be the easiest way to look at that beat.

and to your polyrhythm question. usually I see polyrhythms as two different subdivisions falling together. i.e. playing triplets and sixteenths simultaneously. what you are talking about is kind of a polyrhythmic device as well, but rather some sort of polyrhythmic phrasing, I also find it easier to 'stay in sixteenths and simply cut it into fives or any other number and keep it revolving.
although, if I think about it, I have to say both have more in common than I thought. in particular as I'm thinking of Steve Smiths polyrhythmic licks on his dvd.
the differences between what I see as a polyrhythm and your phrasing poly is that you have rests with a 'regular' poly and with that phrasing you don't. also usually you have a poly revolve on every quarter, but that's just a limitation to the player if you think about it, why not let it revolve on every three quarter notes (Black Page style)?

OoooOoooOooo
OooOooOooOoo

if you don't play the unaccented notes you'd have a 'normal' poly. however, you see the difference mostly is that you have to different rhythms played by two limbs. the thing you are talking about would only be one of the voices I wrote out, not both simultaneously. so probably that would be the difference.
for Schism, please give me a time mark, maybe I can help you out.

Focker do u mean the part just before the second Chorus?
Or do u mean the entire second Verse?

There are many little hi-hat polyrhythms, in the first verse there is this;

All In 12/8

t |------o-----|
T |--------o---|
S |---o-----o--|
f |-Do-oo-o----|
F |o-----------|
B |o---o-o--o--|
HF|x-x-x-x-x-x-|

In the second verse, this;

H |xx-x-x-Dxx-x|
S |---o-----o--|
B |o-o-o-o-o-o-|

Then later, this;

H |-x-X-x-X-x-X|
S |---o-----o--|
B |o-o-o-o-o-o-|
Hf|x---x---x---|

Thanks its very helpful and yeah its the right part. Next time I'll put time, it was kinda late so I forgot what else to put. The schism part I'm talking about is like the first four notes he plays on his hihats I just wanted to know where the bass drum falls.
P.S. I came up with a better definition of a polyrhythm. Its when two instruments overlap each other(if you know the basic definition you'll know what I'm talking about) because the 5/8 will over up the 8/8 if they're both repeating patterns.

Wow, I take back what I said before I'm trying to play along just tapping and Danny got me. I was either playing it wrong or much more focus when I played along other times.

In Schism, the bass drum comes on the first triplet and the quaver after the triplets like this;

-. 1tl2 3 4 5
H |xxxx-x-x-x-|
S |-------o---|
B |o--o-------|
