Bryan Blakey

I think that snare drummer second from the right is retarded or something.

The sound quality of that video was pretty bad, I couldn't listen to it for more than like 15 seconds.

I agree with Bryan Blakey, even though i did listinin to the entire thing.

Drumline and Marching being my favorite part of school:D, id say it was a good preformance. If you dont mind Constructive critisisum(sp?), id say they need to just work alittle on keeping straighter lines, also getting your heels up and getting higher on your toes.

I must say that I thought it was rather boring and not very well done.

yeah same...
I thought it had something to do with me not really liking that song/band in the first place, but eh... was just rather unexciting.

critisism....i think

The whole shirt changing thing was really fruity, and the figures moving in the middle of the floor really turned me away as well. The snare section I thought was sloppy(although it could be the acoustics of the gym) and I thought there should have been at least 4 tom(i forget the actual term but you know)players and not just the two and there should hav been 5 or 6 snare players.

constructive criticism :)

Not true, musicians ussually like rush. I'm getting the sudden urge to kill from Geddy's wacky voice. To be honest I think Geddy put simliminal messages in his songs... Whats that Geddy... MUSICIANS, THE GEDDY SPOKE, HE SAYS KILL ALL NON BELIEVERS.

This has to be one of the all time dumb posts. Rush is a musicians band. These 3 guys have so much natural talent it scares me. Ya don't see too many people play bass, play keys, and sing in unison. Alex is amazing and Neil, well, Neil speaks for himself.

I think it was really really lame.

Go watch Center Grove HS or Centerville HS's show from last year and then you'll see just how terrible this show is. It isn't the students fault, in my opinion it is poorly written. One of the things that makes Winter shows so exciting is that there isn't the "move, direction change, move, direction change" feel of marching band/drum corps. The movement flows and seems continuous.

Band directors really don't get how different marching percussion really is... and that makes me sad. It doesn't take a lot of money to make a good show, all you need is good music, the visual ideas just kind of fall in place.

Yeah so I'm not a set drummer, but I'm the co captain of my percussion section so I have some knowledge.

The snare players were some of the worst I'm ever seen. I can't believe they got 3rd place with all of their snares playing natural instead of traditional. As soon as they started I noticed how horrible their stick heights were. Another side effect of natural sticking.

The pit is HUGE for a high school winter drumline. I only see pits that big in Corps.

The quint players are very solid. It's rare to see 2 quint players both doing crossovers. I'm kind of mad they only stayed on the 3 and 4 drums and they didn't utilize the gock drum. It's a Rush song, you should be doing insane sweeps and whoring your gock.

Bass drummers were simple. Nothing amazing, very very basic stuff.

Overall the most impressive thing was the pit.

And I'm not exactly sure not being a bass player but I'm pretty sure Geddy plays 2 part harmonies sometimes between the bass and the vocals making it even harder.

oh cmon now....it still all comes down to taste no matter what. I can say the same thing ("they're a musicians band") about Government Mule, for instance, and it would be undeniable with the talent and passion for creating music that they have. does that make them a band every musician loves? you know the answer to that. same goes for my personal favorite, Ani Difranco. undeniably gifted on the guitar, amazing song-writer, and lovely, intense voice to boot (not to mention the amazing musicians she performs/records with). to me, she's god, but to most others her style just isn't for them.

so anyway...I respect their talent, but they're just not my cup of tea. the same way any artist may or may not feel super attracted to the work of any of the old masters.

For the most part musicians like them. You won't see someone who doesn't play an instrument listen to Xanadu. You'd see them listening to something by green day or something.

well, if it gives you guys any hope, I've been getting into a lot of stuff recently that I hadn't known about or wasn't too crazy about before I'd started playing drums....like Galactic, for instance (and even Gov't Mule!). so maybe there's still hope for me to fall madly in love with Rush.... :)

but like I said, they're never really been my cup of tea, before and still.

That's not true at all. A lot of my friends (non muso's) listen to Dream Theatre, Rush, and Zappa etc. even moreso than I do. That's a pretty overzealous generalisation. Whether you play an instrument or not doesn't dictate what music you like.

I don't really like Rush either, i've heard a handful of songs, but i'm not to big on the whole prog thing or anything like that. I'd much rather listen to some latin jazz or reggae. :)

I am forced to disagree on two points:

A) Playing matched grip or traditional is not an issue. 3rd place in the WGI Scholastic Champs last year had snares play matched as did Santa Clara Vanguard this year. Are you going to say Vanguard snareline isn't up to snuff because they played matched?

B) As a tenor player, I really want to know what kind of lines you have been watching. All tenors players do crossovers and scrapes together. There are very very rarely split tenor parts.

Personal knowledge. Every good musician I met, listens to at least 2 of those 3, or at least reconizes them as great players and draws influence from them. Most people know like limelight and thats about it

styler
01-08-2006, 02:32 AM
so knowing one song is listening to them?thats complete generalisation as well. i know several musicians that dont listen to any of them..and most musicians you most likely know are still in high school with you. so chances are youve not met the vast majority of the musician population. let alone what they listen too.

There was a chick in the snare line.

That's cool. I like to check out local HS's lines here, very very rare to see a girl on a snare.

So props to whoever that girl was.

I liked the um.. objects. Interesting idea for a indoor show.

You obviously have no clue what your talking about then, do you play guitar? Do you sing? Do you play bass? I highly doubt you do. 3 guys who can play that well deserve all the praise in the world. Can you think of anyone who's come up with great and orginal parts as rush has? You don't like the gutiar? You gotta be kidding me who do you listen to then the transplants? Alex lifeson has come up with some of the best parts ever recorded. The man can rip up and knows exactly what can be done with a guitar and how to play tastefully while retaining his high caliber soloing abilities. Geddy... I don't care if you think he sings like crap, the man IS infact the most talented person in the band, he plays bass, he sings, he plays the bass pedals, and he plays keys ALL live and all perfect. Neil of course is what he is an incredible player that no one else sounds like.

Seems to me that YOU don't know what your talking about. Even if you think the music is pure **** you must appreciate what they have done, they have paved the way for so many other players, TONS of people rip rush off. And they never sound the same and their never as good.
