I hear GC is a bitch to work for.
Everything is based on commission, so if you don't have a lot of sales, you don't get a lot of money.

Heh, I'd love to work at L&M, too. Well... I kinda like Mother's percussion selection more, but L&M's is set up better. Pretty much the only problem is the fact that I live half an hour from the nearest L&M and I don't have my liscence yet.

Yeah GC does suck. I talk to the people in drums there and they all want to leave but dont have other jobs to go to. Its an ok job i guess if youre retired and still want to work in music hah. or if youre young and just want some extra bucks.

Guitar Center is out of the question right now because I beleive that you have to be eighteen to work there, which I am not, but is there anywhere good to work?

its almost impossible to get a job at L&M. matt kennedy works at the L&M near my house, he only got it cuz of canadian idol though.

once i get like 16 or 17 i'm gonna try and get a job at one of my local music places, there's the Music Nook where i take lessons, and i know of a few other places around, if the GC didn't have ****ty pay i would definatly wanna work there, but they do, so i don't

sorry to be blunt guys; but welcome to the real world. your not going to get the perfect job/position straight up, you have to work for it. if your passionate about drums and want to work with them, go for it, but don't expect to be in charge of contant-store-demos with great pay, because thats not realistic. i've worked since i was 13 every week [except exam time in yr12] and its how i got known to be a hard worker and got a decent CV.

^^ yes I think a good idea would be to volunteer at a store if they will take you and prove yourself. I recommend to anyone to always do their best and build a good reputation even if the job sucks.

i've been working since i was around 7 or 8. i was working for my dad, but work is still work.

i've "applied" at a music store, and he said i can have the job once i graduate, since they've got a bunch of kids my age working after school hours now. i didn't really apply, just kind of went in, asked if i could have a job, he asked what i knew about drums and guitars, i told him, he said that i knew more than most of the people there, and more than anyone when they started, so i have the job if i still want it this summer. unfortunately, they only pay $7, and my job now is $10.20. looks like i'll stick to my job now.

I work harder now, than I ever have, running my own drum department. Its non-stop. The problem with many music stores is that the staff members are musicians first, and retailers second, which means many of them are late to work, always needing time off for tours, mess around on the instruments when they should be cleaning, setting up or selling.

Music retail is a tough tough job if you really want to make something of it.

Damo-

How did you get your start in working at a drum store? Not just retail, but as a normal *** employee?

I could see it getting old REAL fast, I really don't think id enjoy working in a music shop to be honest. Retail aint fun and I know it first hand.

At GC it starts as commission but once you start getting higher up its better

also its not 5.15 an hour
at least not in california
thatd be illegal it has to be at least 7.25 PLUS comission
comission is not the sole payer
its just extra

I think you could go under minimun wage if you added comission probably.

what they do when its over a certain percentage
lets say you made a crapload of sales during a workweek or month w/e
they remove some of your WAGE and replace it with the comission and then give you the extra comiision that is left over
otherwise you will make more money than the profit of the stuff you sold

No ****

I saw it, the inflation balances out everywhere. 5.15 here would be even with the prices in cali if you balanced them. The pay is still horrible.. It's not even worth going to work.
