Sonor = ownage
Heard great things about those. Only thing I'd reccomend is stepping up to the 3005, but if that's out of your range the 3003 is definetely a good kit from what I've heard.

If ur sure u want the fusion then go
theres the rock equivalent for the same price
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/449668/
It has larger tom sizes than the fusion. Both gr8 kits but I myself prefer lower pitched toms so I would go for the rock kit.

If your going to spend a bit more for the 3005, order it from massmusic.net so you can get a free tom. Even if you want a 5 piece, its good to have another drum just in case. I would recommend any Sonor though because the quality is amazing in all aspects, the finish, construction, and the packaging for shipping. Not to mention they sound wicked.

I don't think high pitched toms sound nice without an accompanying 16".
I've got a 10" on my kit but its so much nicer when u hav a contrasting scale with the 13 nd 16.

It all depends on what sound hes looking for, if he was looking for a jazzier sound, i'd go with ska's Gretsch suggestion. But if he wants the rock i'd go for the rock 3003. Fusions are nice but i feel they lack diversity. One could always buy a 10" tom later to addon to the rock set.

cheers for backing up my post;) Gretsch are underated in my opinion though.
