I figured I'd acknoledge this Aussie Rock band, simply because I think they deserve it (dunno 'bout the rest of you who will probably flame this band for similarities to Nirvana). Ok, I'm gonna make an attempt at a write up on them to give more introduction then "they did that song Anthem For The Year 2000"

The band hail from Merewhether, Newcastle in the state of NSW.The trio consists of:
Daniel Johns - Vocals, Guitar
Ben Gillies - Drums
Chris Joannou - Bass

In 1994 they won a national Battle Of The Bands competition with the song 'Tomorrow'. The prize was studio time, in which they recorded the single 'Tomorrow' which was played on the alternative rock radio station, Triple J (the band were called 'Death Rides A Sandwich', I believe). This song attracted the attention of Michael Tunn, whowas the host of a TV show by the name of Request Fest. Tomorrow became the most played song in the show's history. The song had no distribution deal, so they popularity of the song landed them a contract with Sony Music.
The demo version of Tomorrow was released within days of the contract signing, and reached #1 on the Australian singles chart, and remained there for six weeks. In 1995, a new version of the single was recorded for release in the U.S, and became the most played song in that year on U.S modern rock radio.
Silverchair's debut album 'Frogstomp' was recorded in just nine days, and became the first Australian album to hit the U.S top 10 since INXS, selling 2.5 million copies worldwide. 'Tomorrow' and 'Frogstomp' sent Silverchair to music superstardomthroughout 96, with memorable performances such as playing on the roof of Radio Music Hall and tours with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, while still trying to get through high school back in Newcastle.
During '96, Silverchair also recorded the album 'Freak Show' which was released in early '97. Differing from 'Frogstomp, this album companioned three Top Ten Australian singles - 'Freak', 'Abuse Me', and 'Cemetary'. 'Freak Show' went Gold in the U.S and global sales eventually exceeded 1.5 million copies in spite the fact that the band was going on world tours while trying to finish their final year of high school.
After completing school, Silverchair had more time to create the breakthrough album 'Neon Ballroom' which was released in March 1999. The group's main songwriter Daniel Johns had been having difficulty adjusting to the sudden success of the band, and used this as fuel for the songs being recorded for Neon Ballroom.
Trying to shake the constant musical comparisons which had continually troubled the band, Johns' created a very original sounding album. Merging heavy rock, orchestral flourishes and synthetic touches with powerfully emotional lyrics, 'Neon Ballroom' was acclaimed as a huge creative leap for Silverchair.
The band toured largely to promote the album, hoping to surpass the success of their previous albums, and the result was Silverchair's most successful album to date, due to the Comet Award winning 'Ana's Song' - a track about Daniel Johns' battle with an eating disorder. 'Freak Show' is also notable for the contributions of Australian pianist David Helfgott.
After signing with a new record label, and even more touring, Silverchair began work on their most recent studio release 'Diorama' (which means a world within a world) , with Daniel Johns assuming the job of co-producer and set out to expand the band to further unexplored musical territory.
A range of other musicians were drawn in to contribute to the album, most notably the legendary Beach Boys and U2 collaborator, Van Dyke Parks who contributed orchestral arrangements to three tracks including a lush epic called 'Luv Your Life'.Silverchair fans got their first taste of “Diorama” when a single called 'The Greatest View' which was released in Australia in January 2002 to coincide with the band’s appearance on the Big Day Out Tour. The track displayed a fresh new sound showing yet another creative leap for the band – now rock veterans at the age of 22.
'Diorama' entered the Australian charts at #1 in April and has gone on to sell over 140,000 copies (double platinum) in Australia so far. It has also yielded the top 10 single 'Without You' and the top 20 hit 'Luv Your Life'.
In November of 2005, Silverchair announced they are working on the music for their (as yet untitled) 5th studio album, aiming for a late 2006, or early 2007 release. They have also announced that they will play a limited number of concerts in March of 2006 to try-out the new material in front of a live audience.

AND THERE IT IS! Took me a while, with a fair bit of help from Wikipedia.
Ok lets discuss this band, and hopefully this thread won't die out quick like I'm anticipating, knowing this forum. Actually, I should have put this in Alternative and Indie, but i figured with heavy songs like Pure Massacre and Freak,I might put them here.Well...Heavy-ish.dunno about some of the thrash fans out there in R&M qualifying some of Silverchair's stuff as heavy but...Oh well, I gotta stop ranting.

they may sound like a nirvana rip-off in their first record but difenetly they were a better musicians than Nirvana.(no offense to the fans, im also a fan of nirvana u know) ... the brilliance in Neon Ballroom & Diorama is in need no Question....

i heard they were making new stuffs now..supposedly to be released late this year.

Daniel Johns is whacked on all sorts of drugs now apparently... Ah well. I loved their older stuff. Freak and Israel's Son are probably my 2 favourite tracks of theirs, but a few of their newer songs I quite like as well.

Trivia: My uncle taught them some music theory a bit after they started getting big, but according to him they now wouldn't know him from a bar of soap.

they are a great band, i love them, kinda went abit downhill as their career went on but anything like the album Frogstomp was great. Silverchair happens to be my favourite band.
It just so happens that, when I spotted this thread, I was listening to "Miss You Love".
My cousin played in the battle of the bands when he was part of the band that is currently called "Thirsty Merc". They came runners up, Daniel Johns actually came up to him and said that Silverchair only one because they were local.

Take your elitism elsewhere. I haven't seen you make single post that doesn't bash some style of music or band for being un-true.

Silverchair are cool. I don't like the Diorama album though. Freak Show was their best, in my opinion. It was the transition from a really Grungey sound to being more Modern Rock orientated, and it work really well.

They've written some amazing songs and Johns is a great vocalist.

Get Frogstomp if your a fan of Grunge. It led to them being labelled as Nirvana copycats, but it's a decent album nevertheless. Shade is an incredible track.

Freak Show is my favourite. It's a little heavier, and a little more Rock orientated. I feel as though it was made with a little more maturity as well. If you were a fan of Freak as a child, this is the album you'll want.

Neon Ballroom is the last of the more depressing Silverchair albums. It's also the point where Daniel Johns really started to change his style, after he began battling Anorexia. It has some really good stuff on it, but it's a little darker than the other albums. It took me a long time to get used to it, and I hated it when I was younger. Great album though.

Really, it all depends on what style your after.

My favs are Neon Ballroom and Frogstomp. Both have truly great tracks. I couldnt split them, though. And I quite like The Dissociatives. Not alot by any means.
And that was a fair bio, Grimm. Although you said David Helfgott was in 'Freak Show'. I thought he featured in the song Emotion Sickness? One of us is crazy.

I enjoyed daniels work with the dissoiatives, its a great album along with i can't believe its not rock. One of the top aussie album of all time IMO.

For me the albums go Neon ballroom>Diorama>freak show>frogstomp.

03-14-2006, 01:19 AM
I personally reckon Diorama is their best work. It just matured so much from their last few albums, it went from depressing, angsty grunge to having awesome melodies and really well-written songs. I haven't listened much to Neon Ballroom or Freak Show, but they're still pretty good. I love Live from Faraway Stables...it just sounds great, so much energy. I hope their new album is good...I really do.

And, I just realised, I started every sentence above with I. How unoriginal am I?

G_Mac07
03-16-2006, 11:28 PM

Undertow? Perhaps, but still not really. Tool have a much darker sound. Honestly I'm struggling to see this comparison. Can you give any more specific examples of this?

He asked my girl her opinion on the two, and she said she was just waiting for him to take the stage. Her friend, who was a Jebediah fangirl, told Daniel that she liked Kevin's voice better, and Daniel laughed.

I like a few of their songs, but I generally don't like this kind of simple mainstream rock; even though they're Australian :)

they are technical on the creativity part though...

Hmm, they still sound like unentertaining clean picking punctuated with power chord riff choruses to me; with a lead singer whose voice I've never liked. Not that they're bad, just not my thing.

First CD I ever owned in my life was Frogstomp. It certainly doesn't get regular play anymore, but I still enjoy a few tracks from time to time. I really like Tomorrow.

I'd have to say that Frogstomp is one of the most common first bought CD's for people our age. It always pops up when people are discussing their first albums.

Apparently the set they played at the Clipsal 500 on the weekend was really poor. It was described to me as "So weak even Triple M would have told them to stop being such pussies".

I wouldn't mind seeing Silverchair. I know my girlfriend would love it. I'm not a fan of RATM at all, really. Aside from their ST.
