After a period of falling out, R.E.M. have recently found their way back into my CD player. This band has such a huge amount of material from over 20 years, yet I rarely see them mentioned in this forum. Surely their just as important as bands like The Replacements, The Smiths or Pixies, maybe even moreso.
Sure some of their post-Bill Berry albums haven't been as strong, but the singles like "Imitation of Life", "Bad Day" and "Great Beyond" are right on par with old R.E.M.

I really can't get into anything after New Adventures in Hi-Fi. There 80s stuff is on par with any other great rock bands, ever, though. Murmer, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT, Green, Automatic for the People... They have one of the strongest catalogues of anyone out there. It's a shame they went and released Around the Sun, one of the worst albums I've ever heard.

LRP will forever be my favorite ablum by them followed by Out of Time and Automatic for the People. i didnt really like much of thier stuff after New adventures in High-Fi. but "Bad Day" is a good song. i was kinda mad they didnt put "superman" on In Time but thats just a personal favorite i guess.

The greatest hits comp includes a good deal of post- "New Adventures..." stuff like the song I mentioned up top all of which stand up well next to old R.E.M.
I'll concede the album to tracks to "Reveal", "Up" and "Around the Sun" are generally garbage.

I don't listen to Wolf Eyes if that's even a band.
Infact I don't know what you're talking about.

I love REM. My favorite has to be Reckoning, Document or Monster...I think Green is right up there with the weaker albums, though...It never did anything for me.

Chronic Town = 4.5/5
Murmur = 5/5
Reckoning = 4.5/5
Fables of the Reconstruction = 4/5
Lifes Rich Pageant = 4.5/5
d0cument = 3.5/5
Green = 3/5
Automatic For the People = 4.5/5
Monster = 2.5/5
New Adventures in Hi-Fi = 3/5
Up = 2/5
Reveal = 0/5
Behind the Sun = didn't bother with it
and that's R.E.M. Amazing band (or used to be).
Reckoning, LRP, and Automatic are all 5 star and you know it. And I'd probably give Reveal a .5 because I liked "Imitation of Life" a little bit.

Ok, so far you don't like Big Star and REM. I'm beginning to think you plain out have bad taste in music.

As much as I love them, it's tough to be a 5-star album. The ones you mentioned are 4.9's, but not 5's.
Well, then I'd put LRP as a 5-star before Murmer. It's their masterpiece and career highlight.

I don't like Murmur that much to be honest... I like their late 80's-early 90's songs better than their older stuff.
Maybe it's just Stipe's mumbling...

god dam no one's mentioned End of the World!
I would give this the catchiest song ever and hardest to sing along to.
It makes you feel good about the end of the world.

I forgot I even made this thread, it was so long ago....
and as for their albums,
New Adventures wasn't that bad and Document is a classic ( 3/5? )

Ya, they're a great band and often overlooked. I even liked some of Reveal quite a bit, and Up had some great ones too.
I didn't think it was possible to rediscover garbage.

I didn't think it was possible to rediscover garbage.
I guess that'd be like discovering a half empty milk container that you thought you threw out a year ago, only to find that it has become even more putrid and repulsive.

REM have always been one of my favorite bands. All their songs sound so different, they have a very varied catalogue.
