Liked the Ruben Gonzales recordings and selected tracks from the Juan de Marcos sessions, but can't stand Ry Cooder's innapropriate slide guitar.

i really like the acoustic guitars :)

Accoustic guitars? What you hear on those recordings are TRES. Looks like a guitar, has six strings like a guitar but they are strung in pairs (like a mandolin). Lovely sound - if you can find it, then recording 'Palo Congo' by Sabu Martinez features tres as the only melodic instrument amongst voices and drums.

I've heard a few songs, it's good stuff, I need to listen to them more.

People should open up to this type of music. They would be happier.
What I like of this album is that it is very tradicional. It's not latin jazz, it's tradicional montuno, son, bolero, etc.
It is like when you listen to an old tradicional bluegrass band or flamenco cantaor. There's nothing to add to make it sound better.
I like Ry Cooder's playing.
