I've been in shock lately with Sufjan Stevens. It could just be me, but I'm sheerly amazed by the music he's put out to date. I was wondering two things:

1) Not that it makes a difference, but is he gay? I think I've noticed kind of a reoccuring theme where the love interest is in other men...maybe I'm wrong, or taking it the wrong way.

2) When is the next state album expected to be finished and released? I've had a really hard time finding further information on the "50 States" concept.

If anyone could help me that would be greatly appreciated. I would also recommend him to anyone who hasn't heard of him.

If it doesn't make a difference, who cares if he is gay?

The information for the "50 states" concept is in Sufjan's mind.

Pitchfork seems to be pushing for Florida though

You might get a better response to this in the ALt and Indie forum. They cream their pants over Sufjan in those parts.

With good reason.

Well, most of us do, myself included. Others call him Stfu Stevens and are mean, like Zmev and NPC.

It doesn't matter in the sense that its not going to change how I feel about his music. It does matter in the sense as I was wondering what context the lyrics are written in. There are not many mainstream artists that would express any gay sentiment, and I am just wondering if he is or not.

I'm not sure what lyrics you are referencing, but when you look at the lyrics to a song like "Casimir Pulaski Day" it is quite obviously that he is singing about a woman.

Could be thinking of The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades.., maybe.

Seven Swans is his good album.

All of the others are below average.

I love the internet.

So who is Sufjan Stevens anyway, I only know him as a name. Is he an acoustic guitarist/vocalist?

Sometimes. Other times he's a whimsical, soft-voiced frontman of an enormous-sounding-yet-surprisingly-small orchestra of banjos, percussionists, and various wind instruments.

Indeed.

I also like Illinoise as well though...

I like everything after Michigan. Good artist.

I've had a hard time getting into that album, I don't enjoy it as much as his previous ones, eg. Seven Swans

A Sun Came! is pretty good. Enjoy Your Rabbit is a little embarrassing, though.

I can definitely see what he means in a song like "To Be Alone With You," which is on Seven Swans:
You gave up a wife and a family / You gave your goals / To be alone with me ... and then later: I'll never know the man who loved me.

But whatever, either way he's an amazing artist.
