Finally! I'm not the first to ask this in the thread!

Thanks for covering that, Jorge.

In my opinion, the most important things to consider when buying a bass (aside from price) are:

-Tone
-Feel
-Versatility

Tone because, well...how is that not obvious? :p

You need an instrument that has good feel to you. You want to be as comfortable as possible when playing.

Versatility is subjective. Some only buy one bass for one set style of music, such as an Ibanez for metal or a Fender Jazz for...well...jazz. :p

However, if you're like me and play all sorts of music, you need versatility. The types of music you play should be considered.

Let us know and we'll help you out. If I had to make a "blind reccomendation," I'd say either a Standard Fender Jazz Bass, Standard Fender Precision Bass, of a Spector Legend 4 string.

gav you make my laugh, ibanez is one of the most versitile basses on the market. the stock preamp on any of their basses is crazy powerful, mine can go from growly punch, to big boomy low bass, to the typical slap tone in the turn of one knob. i have never played another bass that can do that

their as versitile as a passive bass can get, but no where near as versitile as an ibanez

It's true, the sr's are nice basses. If you don't go for one of those I'd say buy a MIM Fender J or P bass. Jazz and Precision basses have been used in almost every style of music imaginable, proving their versatility. They may not have a wide variety of tones readily available, but you can make them sound good playing any genre.

I say, if you want something easy and sturdy and sexy, go with a MIM jazz bass, but replace the bridge with a badass bass bridge II, and the pickups with seymour duncan quarter-pounders. It should run you about $600 (that's a good guess, right?), but you'd have a very playable bass with good sustain and tone.

If you've got $500 to blow on one, go to the music shop and say so, they'l gag to help you out.
But also you'l be needing an amp?

... Are you serious?

Well, for starters, it's the only bridge on the market in which you actualyl have to file the bridge. Second, it's not that good. It's the most overhyped bridge made; it just adds a tad of sustain because it's heavier. A hipshot, a Ghotoh, or just about ANYTHING else would probably be better, and no need to file the saddled on a mediocre bridge :thumb:.

Yes they are!.. for the price their pretty great.. well, for a 5 string in that price range i should say... there might be a better 4... but, it's a solid bass for sure... i've gotten compliment from sound guys and musicians about the tone... it's in tune all the time (after you break in the strings that is)... the string spacing is good, i do alot of slap n' pop on mine.

If your on a budget, i definately suggest it :thumb:

I'm not seeing the need to replace a perfectly good bridge. I would understand if you wanted a tremolo or something, but to replace just for the sake of saying the bass is modded isn't necessary.

Heya mate,

A couple of years back i remember asking the same question and i know many people will dis-aggre but i would strongley reccomend either a Bronco Squier or Peavy Milestone 3. The bronco is only the regions of £90 on gak and around £110 on the highstreet, although shorter than most basses in scale, it sounds and plays ten times better than it's price. The look of it is simple and with volume and tone nobs it is basic to experement with and has a decent variety of musical choice and playing. The Squier makes for an exellent if not perfect starter bass. Secondly the milestone, although peavy basses never interested me, a friend of mine gained one and if your into livly punk this is for you, plays sweetly and sounds beuitful although a little more steep priced it's sound and playing are different to the Bronco's but give a good introduction to alot of musical styles. Try both out even if not considering as these are nice basses and would help introduce you to the world of bass incredibly well.

Hope this helps!!!

I disagree. The one Bronco i played sounded awful and felt uncomfortable.I would try to avoid squiers, but thats just my opinion.

But,I do agree with the milestone.Peavey,Yamaha or Ibanez are great for the price.

Hey Eria, glad to hear you aggre with the Peavy Milestone shame about the Bronco, how much time you have to play around with it and it's amp sets. Cos i thought mine sounded aweful from time to time on different amps. The Bronco has been regarded as one nice sounding bass by many reviews however it takes time to play with it to get the feel you like i guess.
