So, long before my parents decided to surprise me with the Bass Guitar, I had decided perhaps I didn't want to bother with it. I have tons of instruments and can perform on Acoustic and Electric Guitar as well as the Flute and the Piano.. I compose music, I've been trying to find lessons for the Violin for the past 11 years [No, I never relocated x.x], I just started the second half of my second year of high school and I have an extremely content relationship to indulge in.
My question is, should I take the time to learn the Bass Guitar? I have everything I need but I suppose I need some inspiration.
What do you guys think-- would it hurt? Inspire me. :smoke:

i had the same thoughts as you, i already play sax and guitar, i was thinking, do i REALLY wanna learn bass. Man, all i have to say, is that its a great instrument, and if you ever wanna get into any kind of cool band, bass is really a great one to learn. just my two cents.

it's VERY fun if you have at least rudimentary skills at guitar...since like most instruments, the talent tends to carry over in some way to something in the same group...such as strings, woodwinds, ect..(I bought a violin recently...)
just make sure to get your chops up before you try to learn something like slapping.

Your asking in the bass forum... so the answer is going to be yes :)
But here is why I'm taking up the bass again.
It is a great instrument to learn music on an play with others. If you already know guitar, flute and piano then the bass might be a perfect item for you. Most those instruments lack good bass lines. If you enjoy composing and start listening to some good bass lines you will learn how much it will influence your writting for other instruments.
A friend of mine used to write music for some local bands and was pretty good at it but always left the bass line to the bass player or made a very simple bass line. It wasn't until he got a band with a great bass player who couldn't write music that he learned how much the bass can change a song. I personally think he is now a much better music writer that he understands the importance of the bass cleff.
The bass can also be very fun to play and in my mind funner than the guitar because it is different.
I suggest listening to some of your favorite music and try to follow the bassline but also check out other music like jazz or blues.

Well, that is a point-- if I learned Bass I could toughen up on Composing Bass lines on my music. That's actually a really good pointer there. =x Not to mention my love for learning so many instruments at one time *cough*. Excellent. My parents will be enthralled to hear that they haven't wasted money on me.

It's one of those things that expands your ability to communicate with music. If you're not into it, then don't worry. Take the bass back and use it to get a nicer whatever else you play. However, it's nice to know how to play various instruments, then you can give lessons on lots of things and make a full time living giving lessons. Honestly, at 30 bucks an hour you're making a ton of cash. Especially because it would all be under the table. However you'd have to get 40 students a week.

every band needs a bass, so it's good to know. just in case, like, that band you love called {insert cool band here} comes to town and wants a fan to jam with them at the show.

Bass guitar is great because its so universal... doesn't matter if you're playing hip-hop, mariachi, free form jazz, death metal, soft rock, or britney spears covers, you can probably use the same bass for all of it.

its good if you know music theory. then when your composing you can be lazy and use figured bass instead of voicing and shizz. its also good cause if you're good at bass everyone will want you!!!

if you need convincing to play bass, you are not ready to play bass (i'm trying to be deep, yet truthful)

why do you want to learn bass if you dont plan on jamming with anyone.. it'll really improve your skills if you do.. plus i assume you are young (prob my age, lol) so give it a while before you decide and come up with a GOOD reason why you'd like it (not just because it'd be another instrument on the list....)
and if your unsure, dont open it, because if you dont love the instrument you play, youll never get good and there will be no point in playing it
also "that guy" is victor wooten (i cant wait till my teacher lets me meet him :D)

How bout this...Electric bass is one of the youngest instruments in existence (Besides the Stick) There is still alot of discoving of new techniques to do on it. Like victor wooten is still coming up with new technquies on bass, so if you wanting to explore something thats that new bass is the instrument.
