So it's my time to ask "lul wot bazz do i gt coz i hv sum munnnni"

I need one for college as I\'m tired ot changing tuning and intonation on my Ibanez I use for band.

I've got a few ideas floating around mainly:

Ibanez K5
Ibanez BTB 6 string
Schecter C-5
Peavy Grind 5

Any opinions would be greatful as I need this bass to do styles ranging from jazz to funk and blues.

Out of curiousity, have you look at a Yamaha TRB1006, I've used that for Jazz, Funk, Blues, Prog rock/metal and I've felt that it has always given me the sound I wanted/needed.

Just thought I'd recommend it, it's a wee bit below your limit.

Yeah I saw one of them today and I was going to try it out but apparantly music shops now have a "Unless you are buying don't even think of trying out our instruments" policy.

i hate that, i was in a music store and they had locks on everything expensive, like all the warwicks even the a flea bass, so you couldnt try them out, i was pissed

The guy was like "Are you buying today?"

"Well this week"

"Only come in when you have some money"

"What about that 16 year old bashing that Mike Dirnt bass with a pick? Think he's buying it?"

"Is that relevant?"

Wave with the cash and pretend you know what you're talking about. That always works for me. :p

"Only come in when you have some money"

I'd let him know I am buying, but certainly not from a place unable to provide courteous service. Do some shops still not realise people like to try lots of instruments to see what they actually like ?

This was at sound central on the groundfloor of a Virgin Megastore.

You woulda thought out of ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD they wouldn't be like that.

And on topic - from that list you've given i'd go for the Schecter.

I was quite interested in the BTB 6 string, but unfortunately I haven't played one and so couldn't give advice on it's tone/feel etc.

I'd say Cort or Ibanez

From the ones you listed, my choice would be the Schecter.

peaveys are lovely. I'm assumin that it is the natural wood one with the passive EQ. i got a black grind BXP, p/j pu's an active onboard eq but as far as can see they don't do that model any more. think it has been replaced with the cheaper cirrus (very similar)

If you're looking into getting a K5 or a BTB 6-string, you should look into the Ibanez SR506. Basically it's sort of a combination of them both, although more range than a K5 and better playability than a BTB (at least in my experience. I've played about 3 BTBs and 3 SR506's and the SR's played better IMO. although i think the btb's may be J-J which might be preferable to you). It's about the same price as a BTB anyway. Although I think some BTB models are a bit prettier looking, I can vouch for the superb awesomeness of the SR506. As for the Grind and the Schecter, I hear good things about them both but the schecters strike me as ugly.

edit: but out of those choices strictly, i'd go BTB

I'd go back in there, wave the cash under his nose while telling him "See this? Well it could have been yours had you not been such a jerk." Then walk out of the store, but before you get through the door completely say "What a complete asshole."

I hate music stores that have that policy, and won't go near them if they do. You may not buy today, but how do you know you'd even want to save your money for the bass if you don't try it out before hand.

Here's one more idea. Go in, show him the cash, try out the bass, give it back to him and say "It's just not what I'm looking for." Then leave.

^^Even better will be:
You: I like it and I'm going to buy it. (wave with the cash)
He: ok walk this way sir!
You: did I said I would buy it from you? (sinister laugh)

And then walk out of the door.

Oh and JP (I hate the fact that we don't have PM's), can you answer my question about your EQ in the last thread? :)
