View Full Version : I propose the term metalcore be banned from this forum

Anyone in agreement? It always starts the most ridiculous arguements. The term has been completely bastardized. Integrity and Unbroken mixed hardcore and metal. Earth Crisis mixed hardcore and metal. Shai Hulud did, Hatebreed did, 100 Demons did, but metalcore does not sound like metal + hardcore anymore. Now metalcore has developed it's own distinct sound, free of all hardcore influence. I hear no Cro-Mags in Norma Jean. There's no Inside Out in Nora. That sound has become associated with metalcore. It is no longer metal + hardcore, it's just metalcore.
So I propose that we just stop using the term. Alternatives could be "heavy hardcore" or "metallic hardcore" depending on the band. I think it's a ridiculous word that only brings conflict and that's why I say **** it.

i agree, you don't hear much hardcore in what's called metalcore these days. don't see why it needs to be banned though, we understand that "metalcore" isn't refering to metal + hardcore.

true, true. but the regulars do, and if it was banned, they would be the ones that lived with it. the people that come in here to talk about atreyu and the like obviously don't read the stickies and would continue to use the term even if it was banned.

The regulars are always disputing what bands are what, and a lot of people here don't listen to bands like Unbroken and Integrity. I just think it would make less confusion if people stopped using it, or at least used it a lot less. I'm not saying I want it to be a bannable offense, I just think it should be encouraged to use other words.

i understand what you want to accomplish, and it makes sense to me. seems like you just want the people that know what they are talking about to use the term sparingly, not really ban it all together. in the end, it really doesn't matter too much to me, i hardly ever use the term anyway.
Malice
01-04-2006, 02:46 AM
I can agree with that, actually.
Metalcore has become too distinguished from hardcore nowadays.
I can support that move, but yer not to make it a bannable offense as such.

Nope, thatīd be moving all the oldschool metalcore stuff to rocknmetal instead of back here in punk where it belongs.Iīd vote for a new genre name for the newer stuff, thereīs hardly any core in there and sometimes very little metal...

i voted nay just because the screamo fans have to put up with the same thing. we tried changing the name too, but didn't work. i know it probably pisses a good amount of people off calling NJ and Atreyu metalcore, but you just gotta live with it. don't get me wrong, i'd fully support a change if a relevant one was brought up.

Also Norma Jean, From Autumn to Ashes, Underoath all have absolutely nothing to do with hardcore, so why is their genre branding the -core.

Ehh, they're missing a good portion of hardcore. They do play with actual hardcore bands sometimes though.
One of the main differences I see between metalcore and the crap that get's called metalcore is the lyrical content. The crap that gets called it have no influence from real hardcore.

Also I meant to say not only lyrical content, but the delivery of the lyrics aswell.

You are being way to broad though. It's like saying all bands are music, so let's just do it that way.
A Christian Rock band is going to write lyrics about Strength in a different way a hardcore band would.
Crappy generic ex:
"I feel the touch of the man who helped me when I was down to replenish my lifeforce" - obviously some random crap I made up about what could be jesus, I don't know any real christian rock lyrics
"And I lost everything I fought to gain
Over - Overcome
Everytime you spit in my face
Over - Overcome
Add more weight! I won't break
Over - Overcome
Won't allow myself to be beat
Overcome, Overcome, rise back up" - Terror
There are some obvious differences in the writing style there yet they talk about the same thing and you don't have to have listened to it's delivery in a song to notice the differences.

haha. not that its really pertinent to the discussion, but there are some good Christain lyrics out there.
This time your screams won’t be heard
You will fight this battle
But we’ll take you out so quickly
That you and your so-called army
Couldn’t see us coming
Fight this battle
We’ll tear you down to the ground
We can’t stop now
We were born for battle
Without vision we will die
We were born for battle
Against the tide of compromise

Seriously, we should. Because bands like Haste the Day, As I Lay Dying, Nora, etc., I know you guys don't like them, but they're there, and they aren't hardcore, metal, or metalcore, so they just get tagged metalcore.

The thing is, those lyrics don't really scream hardcore. There is actually some Johnny Cash songs that he wrote about murder, that if you just looked at the lyrics you might think was some soft death metal song.
I'm just saying the ultimate sound of the band determines what genre they are in, regardless of their lyrics.

No one said anything about metalcore bands being banned from discussion. Just the term does not mean what it's supposed to anymore and thus it should no longer be used. Causes dispute.

I didn't insult a single god damn person, I made a joke about Kasey, who I am perfectly cool with. Eat a bag of dicks you Fall of Troy liking mother****er.

Screamo should not exist. Metal has not been bastardized, it has tons of subgenres. Emo has been bastardized, I'd rather hear "emotional hardcore" than emo.
