I started violin in school, but I haven't been playing very long. Basically the only thing I can do it play some scales.
I love the instrument though. Very expressive.

Can you play an electric violin through a guitar amp? Does distortion sound good on it? Can it be used with a cry-baby wah wah? Anyone that knows please reply, cause i couldnt find this stuff out on google. I play a lot of different kind of music(im a guitarist) like grunge, alternative, some ska, metal, and classic rock and even folkish stuff like dylan. Any answers that could be provided would be thoroughly appreciated.

i use my fender electric violin with my guitar amp and i use all my guitar effects on it. you can make some really cool sounds if you know how to do it.

Apocalyptica does that with Cellos...I can't see why Violins wouldn't work just as well.

I've been playing for nearly a year now, and it's so the best instument in the world. I wish I'd started that when I was younger instead of the guitar.
I have a crappy cheap violin, when I play gigs with it I plug a guitar transducer into it and amplify it with that. Not great but it works

I've been playing for about 13 years now, and I am concertmistress in my school's orchestra. I played for a bit in 2 youth symphonies, where I did solo parts in some concertos, but didn't have the time because of my heavy studies. Right now I am mostly dedicated to one quartet with viola, because of our heavy gig schedule.
I have no life right now, so I spend most of my time playing a musical instrument of some sort, or doing something study-related. When I'm posting here it's usually because I am procrastinating some sort of assignment I went online for :p
The violin is a beautiful instrument. I never really began to understand the art of it until about 2 or 3 years ago. Before that I was too egotistical and played in competitions just to win, not to share my art or for the joy of playing. My playing has also improved so much, as I'm not so centered on technicality, but more so on musicality. I have respect for anyone who has the self-discipline and dedication to devote any part of their life to this instrument, from a beginner to virtuoso. Cheers.

hello all,
i have played violin for 34 years ive lead symphony orchestras and did musical productions, worked with chamber choirs, played in comps and eventually taught in secondary schools.
Its a wonderful instrument and i play classical as well as blues and blue grass, pop and rock.
im a bass musician too and my wonderful hubby bought me the most beautiful white electric sculpted violin, its just the outer edge the rest is cut out, its magic to play and yes i use his guitar amp and effects peddals.
so have a go and youl realy have a ball, i do have 1 hand crafted french violin i paid heaps for along time ago thats all i wanted appart from an electric one they are heaps of fun.
nice to know so many others are playing,
chears all, keep up the good work.

I've played for 12 years now, ever since I was four. It's really made learning how to play things like guitar and bass really easy.
Unfortunantly, I have such a crappy violin that it's hard to get good tones out of it.

Hmm a pretty long time ago, when our conductor in highschool was rehearsing us for a concert, we all put down our instruments and pulled out kazoos and began to hum our parts. The look on his face was ASTONISHING!
(doesn't know if this is relevant, or not  )

actually that was kind of random. Anyway, yeah it is a long time go... but maybe I still have a shred of talent in me still lol. Never know. Well, I also play guitar and bass (and drums) so I have experience with fast fretting - in this case fingering (guitar) stretching my fingers to reach a note (Bass) and wrist movement (drums and guitar).
well i play drums and bass...but ive always like violin....and i tried to play on of my friend's ones...but we both decided it just wasnt my thing after about an hour lol

With no prior experience, what do you expect? Lol. Sometimes I bring my guitar to my friend's house to let him use because he wants to learn it and he let's me use his Viola lol.

I've been playing violin for a long time now. It's a fantastic instrument especially when you play it to a high standard. There are some great violin composers too, especially from the Romantic period who really exploit the instruments many textures and sounds.

That's the Allegro Moderato right?
This is an excellent piece, I played the solo my 9th grade year in a U.S. highschool with their symphony orchestra the year before I moved back here.. (I feel like a gypsy..). It's pretty difficult.. I think at the time it was a little bit too difficult for me, as I lost countless hours of sleep awake at night with a heavy steel mute on my violin and bloodshot eyes.. good times!
Are you going to be playing that with the youth symphony? Good luck on your audition

i just bought a violin this weekend. pretty radical :) i just wish that it was easier to get into. its going to take a lot of work, especially because i wont be getting any lessons due to my negative cashflow.
i love violins though. theyre beautiful.
well, i suppose i love the style of the fiddle moreso than the violin, but still....
its a beautiful instrument.
PS
anyone know a good way to teach myself? does anyone have any good resources/websites i should check out? email- Twenty5HourDays@hotmail.com
anything is greatly appreciated

I thought the Fiddle and Violin were the same thing... just the style of music they're used for.
