Check out some Sabians (cheaper in Canada).
Mainly Vault rides and HHX's.
Around here, my 18" Stage crash cost $180 CDN if I remember correctly. 14" HHX hats should run roughly $220 for a good price. The Vault rides though are expensive, I can't remember the price but I'd guess around $280 and up.

Paiste's Traditional line is probably the best on the market, IMO. However I have a feeling they're expensive for you guys so i'd go with the following:
20" HHX Manhattan Ride
18" HHX Chinese
13" HH Fusion Hats
15" HH Thin Crash

Zildjian A's and A Customs actually work surprisingly well for jazz.
I have a 21" A Sweet Ride, that is washy and warm enough for jazz, but when played closer to and on the bell, it can be used for most alternative and rock applications.
My 18" and 20" A Custom crashes are great for everything. They have the warmth of K's almost, but the brightness and shimmer of A's, so when hit softly, they produce a darker, warm accent. When hit hard, they produce a louder explosion of color, for big powerful accents.
You would think that K's would be the only choice, but careful selecting and experimentation will show that certain sizes from different lines can be used in more way than you would think ;).
Edit- This is only from Zildjian of course. Sabian HHXs and some HHs can be great for jazz.. especially the Dave Weckl Evos, they are thin and really dark.
Some Paiste 2oo2s and Giant Beat cymbals are warm enough for a lower volume jazz setting too. I would go with Giant Beats of the two, as the big sizes and thinner weights work perfectly IMO.
Bosphorus makes GREAT cymbals for jazz, listen to any of Stanton Moore's stuff.. he uses giant ones and they sound great ;).

As said, K, K custom, HH, HHX are all good. I'm not a fan of As/A Customs and similar lines, they are just too bright for my taste(but they are good for the bigband/swingy sound). I have really been liking Istanbul cymbals as well, my 19in crash/ride is easily one of my favorite cymbals.
flyguy:He said not outrageouly expensive, which Constantinoples are.

I was in my local music shop earler today and saw Sabian "Hand Hammered Performance Set" which includes 14" Regular Hats, 16" Medium Thin Crash and a 20" Medium Ride which all would work great for jazz. It cost 899.00$$ can. for the set.

Stop leading him in the direction of 'wannabe' jazz cymbals.
Get real jazz cymbals: Istanbul Agop.

I hate the HHX hats and ride for jazz, way too bright, but the crash sounds really good for it...
My school has an awesome little setup, New-Beat Hi-Hats - awesome, awesome for jazz, 18" HHX crash, and my favorite ride ever, a K-dry custom 20" ride... I love that ride, it's thin but not bright, just an awesome sound for Jazz...

my high school's cymbal setup was awesome for jazz band as well:
14" A Platinum New Beats (favorite hi-hats of all time)
17" K Thin Dark Crash (favorite crash of all time)
20" Vintage A Ride (not my favorite, but still good)
killer jazz setup....

no kidding, they sounded so good, better than my pair, but I didn't have the money when I graduated. I didn't get my New Beats until September.
