In metal, the bVI bVII i progression is really really overused. I.E.:

C D Em
Bb C Dm
F G Am

Similarly overused progressions in melodic metal and rock include the i bVI III bVII progression, a la Em C G D.

Any progression that derives a neoclassical Circle of Fifths type structure is by definition overused because it's so logical-sounding, resulting from the dominance of "classical" theory and theme for the past 600 years. Gary Moore ballads and Randy Rhoad's lighter songs with Ozzy are only some of the offenders. Yngwie of course takes it to dumbly predictable extremes.

(I'm gonna use tab theory here) Many bands who tune to drop tunings (hell, a lot of American metal bands) base many of their songs around the 0-7-8 style of playing.
