Then A Customs would be as well. Except you have more choices (Fast, Projection, Regular) and it's the original. Not a copy, unlike A... oh i mean Vault.

no no no, the vaults depfinetly have a beefier, chunkier sound, ive tried them in identical sizes, my friend has a set of a customs, hes had the 18s and the 20s, but the vaults definetly have more power but the a customs are a little cleaner sounding.

Like Drum Phil said it is all personal preference but if at one point SABIAN doesn't have a sound I am looking for I would probably check out other companies... Here are a list of the reasons I prefer SABIAN:
-As a Canadian I can support our economy
-I am proud to use a Canadian cymbal company's cymbals
-Their cymbals are awesome (not that other companies' aren't)
-They are less expensive here
-Other than the Pearl CX300s that came with my kit, my first cymbal was a SABIAN

Need some advice.
I'm still a beginner and I've been wanting to get some new cymbals. I've got the originals that came with my set and as far as I know I think they're just cheap no names. I'm alot more comfortable with my drumming now and know that drumming wasn't just the flavor of the month it's really something that I would like to stick with and improve in. I've picked it up pretty fast.
So I need to know what brand and how many cymbals are good for a 5 piece drum set?

It's all personal preference... if you go to www.sabian.com (http://www.sabian.com) you will see that the number of cymbals per kit can vary!
I suggest going with SABIAN because I whore them... Seriously though you should try different cymbals until you find the ones you like...

What is the quality that I should look for in a cymbal or is just what I like. Cause to tell you the truth my cymbals don't sound too bad, but I know they should sound better.
Thanks for the suggestion though I'll have to look into them.
Another question now. I've seen pictures of drum setups and why is there sometimes a cymbal that is set up backwards. What effect does that give.

I'm guessing you are talking about a china cymbal... It curves upwards therefore placing it inverted is more convenient for your sticks and the cymbal...
Pretty much look for sound... As long as you like it :thumb:

I'd say aim for Pro Sonix level if you're goin with sabian. I personally steer well clear of B8/B8Pro/Xs20 and solars. AA/AAX/HH/HHX/Vault/Pro/Pro Sonix and Signature are all amazing lines.
However for zildjian i'd keep away from any cymbal with a Z in its line name. That leaves K/K Custom/A/A Custom :)
Im not huge on paiste so i cant really help there.

Its what we're here for sir. If you'd like some narrowing down tell us the kinda sound you're after from each cymbal.
E.g. I like a nice pingy ride with slight dark undertones and a bell that makes my knees weak. Answer? 22" HH Rock ride

And since when does a few dollars matter in the light of 180?
In other words, they are the same price. And are blatent copies of A customs.
I wouldn't use them on on principle alone for being copies, I'm all for new cymbals and new sounds.
But for sabian to spend all that time, money and energy into jsut copying someone elses stuff, when they could have come out with a UNIQUE line.
Well it doesn't help anyone, except the stock holders.

I've heard them side by side, they are nearly identical. As have numerous other people who say the very same thing.

Here you go, heres what I call a walkthough. Go to the nearest music store. If you have a Guitar Center nearby thats going to be your best option. Take a drumstick with you. I always show the lady or gentleman at the door when I walk in so they don't think I stole it. And go and tap, lightly crash, crash, you know whatever it is you do, on all the cymbals in the store. And for a beginner I'm going to say your going to want to atleast have an 18" crash, maybe a 16" crash, a pair of hi hats, Hi hat sizes do matter, bigger hats tend to be warmer (aka blend better with guitar, bass, whatnot) and I would go no less than an 18" ride, you might want to look at a bigger size though
It's been said many times before and I'll go ahead and restate it, try out all different brands and see what you like, the most your going to get on here are peoples opinions.

Okay, that does it, I'm going to the Zildjian page and the sabian page and comparing the 2. I compared them in the store but that isn't enough because I wasn't in this big contriversy... The final judgement is near!
Okay I just compared 16s and one major difference. Vault just goes nice and quick, zildjians boom up to it. The vault is a little faster on the site the sabian has less body but when I compared it had more. So for the most part the vaults are quicker. Thats just about the main difference in why I like them more. Zildjian are more consistent in cymbals which is good and bad, but for fast crashes I choose vaults.

01-02-2006, 04:32 AM
yes.. sabian vaults sound very similar to zildjian's A Customs..
however, the A Custom sound was previously unavailiable from Sabian. Therefore Sabian found their own way to provide that kind of sound to their customers, and i give them credit for that... (seeing as though the manufacturing methods are quite different)
but anyway.. back to the question... seriously give the MB20s a try.. they sound great and are as LOUD as hell.
