I've been getting really into this band lately. I've heard 3 of their songs, which album should I get first?

Unknown Pleasures.
Closer!
But seriously, anything you can get your hands on.

Closer is good but some of the songs are too synthy for their own good, and some just suck. But the rest of the songs are gold.

Substance
Yes, it's a compilation but the songs on there aren't found on either of their full length LPs. Plus it contains what are probably Joy Division's three best songs (Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere, and Transmission). I got both Unknown Pleasures and Closer first, I was a fan, but I didn't fully love Joy Division until I bought Substance.

Definately Unknown Pleasures. I started with that and got Closer next, and thats the only way to go.

I think either album is good or you could get I believe it's called permanent or something, it's like their greatest hits cd.

They're really quite overrated. I respect their importance, but I just don't think their songwriting and sound are all that great. I enjoy Substance from time to time, but I rarely listen to Closer. I should probably get Unknown Pleasures next time it's on the $10 table.

Definitely get Substance first. It's a compilation yeah, but it's an essential one that includes singles not available on the two albums. All you need are the two studio albums, Substance, and the Complete BBC recordings and you're all set with all the JD songs you'll ever need. I have the boxset but it's really not necessary unless you're a big fan or like owning complete discographies.

Joy Division are one of those bands who had a few amazing songs and a tonne of near unlistenable ones.

If they had better production i think they would be better but half the time all, i can hear is weird ambience and Curtis droning unintelligably. Which is a ral shame because when they're good they're near untouchable in the field.

"Unlistenable" Joy Division songs are few and far between. I don't know what you mean by that .

I agree. I love gang of four. I'd say they're not only more upbeat but also a bit more punkier. i guess you could say.

i never got round to checking them out properly, but i always loved Bella Legosi Dead. i find it really haunting and bleak. very bass heavy too.
JD are amongst my favourite bands of all time. IMO their best album is closer because it had the most feeling, it had a subtle interplay between synths and guitars, and it has my fave JD song of all time - decades. the ending to that song just makes me feel so sad.

Start from the beginning with Unknown Pleasures. It's a brilliant record, one of my all time favorites. Then get Closer, then Substance ... or - you could skip all of this and get most of it at once by obtaining the Heart and Soul boxset. It's great.

It's missing some good ones though, like Disorder.

disorder was the first song i heard by them. just go buy both albums and substance. then buy substance by new order. all those cds really are dirt cheap these days.
they did have some scratchy recordings, but i really love the sound of unknown pleasures. drenched in reverb. martin hannet did a good job.

there's no point in buying substance after closer and unknown pleasures because sustance is a compilation album that contains tracks from both those albums.

I've always thought Joy Division were pretty good. I mostly enjoy them, but I can't stand some of their songs. Atmosphere is one I just plain don't like.

I could never get into Closer. It's just not that great. I might give Unknown Pleasures a chance one day. Maybe.

i wish all their songs were as catchy as love will tear us apart.
i can listen to that song over and over again, but a lot of their songs get very grating.
i do find that unknown pleasures is a lot less grating then their other releases.
I could never get into Closer. It's just not that great. I might give Unknown Pleasures a chance one day. Maybe.
I'm urging you to get Unknown Pleasures. It kills Closer.

Yeah, but the movie is called The Man They Could Not Hang. Doesn't make sense.
Maybe a movie called The Man Who Hung Himself would have been more appropriate.
