Ok, its pretty hard to give you instructions during the winter over the internet but if you have any questions you can ask away. When you first first start you shouldnt be trying to score a 70 and make a drive of 350 yards. Once you get down the basics everything falls into place. What helps alot though is the proper stance. One thing that all pros/really good players have in common is that they all have basically the same stance. Heres a pic http://www.getfittogolf.com/images/stanceWht.jpg Notice the following things 1) Arms make a triangle. 2) Butt sticks out. This helps in the rotation of the swing. 3) Knees bent. Helps weight transfer. ... and one of the most important things in golf 4) KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN! Always keep your head down looking at the ball before swinging, during the swing and after the swing. If you lift up your head at any moment your whole body lifts too, screwing up the swing. Now thats posture.
Grip http://www2.worldbook.com/features/golf/assets/images/grip_sm3.gif
There are many different types of grips (aka how to hold the club) the biggest ones are Baseball, Interlock, and Overlap. Baseball grip is not really recommeneded for acutal golfers but i learnt it when i first started. Interlock (which is use) is when you take the pinkie of your bottom hand (my left becuase im a leftie) and put it in between the space of your first finger and middle of the top hand. This helps keep your hands as one unit, not much flexiblity. Overlap is when you overlap the pinkie instead of putting it inbetween like before. This gives you more flexiblity, somtimes good and sometimes bad.
So there you have the pre-swing mechanics. I talk about the swing later. Fingers are tired.

yeah, that seems to be my main problem now. my head moves before the swing so that's bad. i've been going to the driving range lately, but i still can't get it right.
EDIT: hmm, i guess not alot of MXers play golf eh?

Golf's ****ing best. I've been playing on and off for about 2 and a half years, not particularly good but this is the year I'm going to get a good swing and start scoring well, seen as I'm gonna have a pretty long summer and should be able to drive by then.

Jack Nicklaus, (possibly the best golfer ever) used to have the same problem when he was 9. His dad bought a gigantic bucket of balls and would hold Jack's head down while he swang. Ever since Jack has been known for his unwaivering concentration. (Oh and part 2 of my tips will come either this afternonn or tomorow)

Woah awesome thread idea. Um, im not very good (16 handicap) but i do have some tips to offer. When you get around to buying yourself a decent set of clubs, make sure you go to a golf shop and get them fitted for you height and arm length etc. I was having a lot of trouble cos my arms are freakishly long and i have shovels for hands, but once they set my shaft length and grip thickness, my games grown by leaps and bounds. Ive dropped 4 shots off my handicap in two months.
Thats not to say go out and buy yourself a expensive set of clubs, cos some people find that golf isnt for them. A good starter set can set you back $400-$500AU but if thats too much, just a second hand set can do the job.
KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN!!! I think thats gonna be the most repetitious piece of advice in this thread. Also, if you have any injuries i.e. bad back etc(ive got a bad shoulder) make sure you take a few minutes before you tee off off the 1st to do a few stretches to loosen up your muscles etc. This goes for all golfers even if you dont have an injury, but its especially important for those who do.
Now just for an aside, i think that the best thing about golf is, you can be having one of the worst games in weeks, and it can all be salvaged by watching that one awesome shot, rocketing off the tee with the perfect angle, landing on tge green and kicking back to stop 4 feet from the pin.
It doesnt matter if you choke the putt, but watching that ball is what makes it all worth it.

Umm not to be a hard-*** but daly doesn't have the best swing that young guys should copy. It works well for his frame. Now if you look at daly's swing path and stoppage point it is considerably bigger than most players. That give him the longer drives. But unfortunattely overswinging and have a super large swing path may not work for most guys. Then again golf is a personal sport and if a swing works for you, stick to it.
(Note the last line. Steve Ballestroes was a famous golfer who won the Masters once yet 10 years later shoots a 90. Why? Because he tried to make his swing look like the perfect one and not use the one which won him the Masters>)

you can 12 to caddie, no big deal about your age.
i think the caddie gets about 10% of the winnings. if you're caddying in a tournament. 50$ for 9 holes? 100$ for 18?

Still thats a very good score one that everbody would want. :chug:
However it does ggeet tougher when you're not always hitting your PW and 9 iron on par 3's and are forced to bring out the heavy lumber.
(Just thinking last time i played a par 3 course i was 3 over but that was 4 years ago.) Keep of the good work.

Hey im after a tip. My driving is absolutley terrible. I think the furthest ive ever drove is just over 175 metres. I do have a bad left shoulder(im right handed) though. Any tips? My shorter game (4 irons and down) is pretty awesome though. Any ideas/advice?
Haha, speaking of clubs, one of my wedges is one i stole off dad. Me and my mate who i play golf with have no idea what it is. I t has an undersized club head but the head is really heavy and the angle of the club head is fairly steep. I use it mainly to punch up on the green. It doesnt have a name on it, just a big red C so i call it my Communist club.

Haha nice name for a club. On another note your driving distance is isanely small if you are bigger than 5'5 and weight more than 100 pounds. Chances are if you have such as small distane you are doing something blatantly wrong. Make sure you get a torque on your torso and use weight transfer to add yards. If you have weight transfer, enough torque and a decent swing you should get the ball far enough to score well.

It seems like every golf instruction ( be it in a magazine, golf channel etc.) praises dilligent practice of the short game. In a few of the last posts I've seen people confess to being horrible with driving the ball, yet possesing a quality short-game. If I were thirteen or fourteen (when the growth spurt begins to taper off) and couldn't consistently drive between 230-250, I'd stop working on the short game. Unless your playing extremely flat greens, its impossible to be competitive without hitting the green in regulation.
When I was around 11 or 12, I'd get a bucket of balls and work on sand shots for as long as I would drive. My good short game might have saved me 4 or 5 stokes a round, but my weak driving cost me probably 10. If I would have practiced long game more at that age, I'd have been much better then and a little better now.

Ha, I'm the opposite. My shortgame's kinda weak, but off the tee I'll put it dead straight out there 300 every time. If I can just get my putting up to par, I'd be easily getting down into the 70s.

^^ I'm saying that was the case when I was younger. I don't get to play nearly enough as I'd like now, due to poorness and shortage of time.
I can hit around 260 or 270 off the tee with a fairly predictable draw. My long irons are terrible, 6-8 are pretty decent (usually the distance of my approach shot on a par 4, for example), and my wedges are bad. However, I'm an exceptional putter ( except on bermuda) and my short game is generally cooperative. I'd say I'm about a 10 handicap.

I can't wait for it to get warm out again so I can go golfing. I'm not very good though. For clubs...
Driver: Taylor Made R580-XD
Woods: used old Cobra driver, really old Titleist 1, 3, and 5 woods
Irons: Really really old 3, 5, 7, 9 that match, a 4 iron that's from a different set.
Wedge: 56° sand wedge (can't think of the brand but it's decent).
My main problem is consistancy. I can drive over 300 yards. But not every time. Some times I can get a good solid hit and drive over 300 yards, but on the next hole I slice it 100 yards to the right. The last time I went last year I got an eagle. 330 yard par 4 and I nailed the drive. Bounced one time in the fairway and landed on the green about 3 feet from the pin. Too bad that's a pretty rare occurance.
My wife and I held a fundraiser golf outing last year to benifit the hospital our daughter was born and had her surgeries at. Good times.

Actually I'm 25, about to be 26. I just feel old. And 26 is pretty old for MX. I only have a sand wedge. I want a lob wedge. Actually I want an entire new set since mine pretty much sucks. I just don't have the money. The only reason I have the nice TaylorMade driver is because I overpaid a doctor bill so I got a check from the insurance company I wasn't expecting so I went and bought the drive before my wife missed the check.

Good short game=greens in regulation
Great driving makes the game alot easier, but in my best round ever (a 40, when I was 13) my longest drive was less than 230
My advice is to not let anyone get inside your head.
Including yourself. Most people bog their swing down with too many "perfect swing thoughts" while attempting the "perfectly natural-feeling swing."
Here are just a few things you want to think about while attempting a smooth, natural swing:
Grip the club firmly but not tightly
Those little V's formed at the crotch of the thumb and forefinger of each hand should be aligned and pointing at the same place- a spot one inch right of your right eye socket
Keep your left elbow straight
Keep your feet shoulder width apart
Keep your head still
Hold your hands high
But with the clubhead on the ground
Place the ball slightly to the left of your center line
Aparantly its a line near your center
Keep your head down again
Start the club back slowly
Rotate your shoulders
Shift your weight to your right hip
Now rotate your left one sort of too
Stick your left shoulder under your chin
Do something with your left foot while counting "one-thousand one"
Start the downswing, leading with your left arm
If your right arm gets there first, you are either left handed or something went horribly wrong
Begin to transfer your weight from right to left
Come down and through the ball smoothly
Unwind your hips
Finish with hands high
Breathe
Return your seat backs and tray tables to their locked and upright positions
I've found that if i swing without any thoughts, worries, or concerns over results, my subconsious mind will take over and correct any major flaws in my swing.
If you ever get the shanks or the yips, try this. Attempt to shank the ball on purpose. You will find this is almost impossible and your swing will improve instantly. :smash:

nothing bad about that... i get quadruple bogey all the time.. even though i've been whacking the ball for hours everyday.. still haven't got any good with my irons.
Yeah. I'm old and crusty. I just post here to stay down wit my peeps yo.
O.o
Actually I'm 25, about to be 26. I just feel old. And 26 is pretty old for MX. I only have a sand wedge. I want a lob wedge. Actually I want an entire new set since mine pretty much sucks. I just don't have the money. The only reason I have the nice TaylorMade driver is because I overpaid a doctor bill so I got a check from the insurance company I wasn't expecting so I went and bought the drive before my wife missed the check.
getting old isn't all that bad.. yeah i'm so frickin' excited... going to play my 1st 18 hole course next week.

Attempt to shank the ball on purpose.
Amazingling i can do that at will, but keeping it straight at will is a different story.

2 weeks?!?!?! im in jersey and i havent played in 3 months, so dont be talkin.
well, is the ball slicing bad or you just cant hit it..?
-slicing- make sure your playing off your left foot, and close the face (or open if slicing left)
-not hitting- um.. swing slower, just hit it a few times slow and gradually increase speed till you get used to it

^ i'm not hitting the ball, but i got it right now though.... is there anything wrong with my swing if i have to align my driver's head behind (still beside the ball, but a little back) the ball. if i do that, then i'd hit the ball. don't understand what i'm talking? say so, and i'll post a pic.
what are the best irons out there right now? im looking at buying callaway fusions which i heard were excellent irons. i used them at once and they were great. im looking to spend 2 or 3 grand by the end of the summer on a new set of clubs so any ideas would be greatly appriated.

Since apparently money isn't an issue for you (must be nice), don't get clubs just because the guy at the golf shop said they're the best. Try out different sets. See what you like, what fits your style of play the best, what's going to help your game the most. Whatever you end up getting, get them fitted for you. Even mix and match clubs if that's what will work the best for you. You see a lot of guys on the PGA have complete sets from all the same company. But those are the guys that are getting paid $50000 per round to use those clubs. The guys without the endorsements (the newbs and ameteurs), a lot of times, will have a bag full of clubs from different manufacturers because they each have their own strengths/weaknesses. It might be more expensive that way, but you'll end up with a better set of clubs.
Personally, I'm a fan of TaylorMade. I've got the R580XD driver and I love it. I hit a set of irons (can't remember which ones now) but they hit pretty good.

if you're going to spend 2 - 3k, why don't you get the SQ driver. or maybe you should look into the new r7's from taylormade.

Technically, there are probably thousands of things "wrong" with your swing. But if what you're doing is working for you, why try to change it? If you do have problems with it in the future, check your swing path. Setting the clubhead behind the ball will mean that the clubhead has more time to rotate before it gets to the ball. Don't be surprised if you pull some left. (assuming your right-handed)

the r7 and sq drivers are ones that im considering to get. but i havent tried out the r7 irons yet, ill look into it though.

if you're comparing the r7 and SQ driver, in my opinion you should really get SQ because they are much more reliable for distance.

I schedule my outing for this year. Saturday July 15th. Gotta get crackin on the rest of it though. Have to find sponsors, prize donors, caterers etc...and most importantly, GOLFERS! Last year we had a pretty good turn out. Had around 40 or so people, and raised almost $4000 for the hospital my daughter was born and had her surgeries at.

Cool, I didnt know we had a golf thread.
Best advice I can see so far, quit paying big money for useless clubs & either spend it on lessons, or just play more! Clubs dont do diddley unless your a pro.
Trust me, long time golfer here! Lessons, lessons, practice practice.
An even bigger waste, taking lessons & not practicing or playing extremely often. You will lose what you gained very fast by not constantly repeating what you have learned.

One of the advantages of belonging to a course is the ability to practise as long as you want, when you want. At my course i can go play 18 anytime, or just hit thousands of balls at the range.

extreme bumpage.
I haven't been able to go out much this year since I chopped my hand. I've only been able to go in the last few weeks. It's actually helped my game though. I can't take a full swing so I'm hitting the ball straighter. Can't play guitar anymore though.
We got our golf outing planned as well. July 15th. So far we've got about 30 people registered. Last year I think we had about 35 people golf, and another 15 or so for the dinner so I guess we're on track. Plus the local newspaper is donating some ad-space for us so hopefully we'll be able to get some more people signed up that way.

On July 1 of this year I got a job at a 9-hole course doing maintenance. When I first got the job, I hadn't golfed a game in my life, but since I got the job I golf about twice a week now (I get it for free :)). One of my favorite things to do now. I've found out I'm a fairly good golfer, I'm just not much of a putter. But at the moment I'm golfing at an average of a 45 (with a couple Mulligan's here and there....).
Also, right now I'm using a set of random hand-me-down clubs, that are very old and worn out. So what's a good intermediate set of clubs?? There's a place nearby that sells good used clubs for great prices, so I'm wondering what a set to look for would be?? Any suggestions?

ahhh, feels good to be posting again..
so suggestions for clubs? well one thing you should look it is their lenght, when you lay the club head on the ground, make sure it is laying as flat as possible on the ground. i'm currently using the old PING eye 2, but damn their good.. if you're lucky enough to find them, go for it, because they're probaly on the best irons ever made... as for shafts, well it's really your choice if you want to go for steel or graphite, but i personally wil go for steel shaft. well that's it i guess, the rest is up to you. good luck :chug:

gg, my bud got a hole in one
BUT, before you go, "cool"
Par 3 135yds, he hits a PW 50 yards to the left of the hole, bounces off a boulder (Mtn Course), ricochets across the back of the green at 200 mph and continues that path, we cant actually see the green from the tee box, so it appears its in a sand bunker or out of play.
We looked everywhere for the ball, guess where it was.
Since then, hes had the ball & the pic of the hole framed and sealed in this frame worthy of selling a millions copies of your hit CD across the globe and announces to everyone we see he got an Ace. :p
Its a hole in one for sure, but c'mone :)
Its like an inside joke to all of us now to crack up everytime he starts up about his skillzzzzz

An ace is an ace even if it's ugly. I'd take it. Supposedly a local car dealership is going to be putting up a new car as a hole-in-one contest at the golf outing I'm planning. Haven't heard a for sure YES answer, but my brother-in-law talked to the owner and he sounded like he wanted to do it, it was just a matter of picking the car and getting hole-in-one insurance on it.
I've gone out a couple more times this year but still not as much as I'd like. Too much other stuff. I did shoot a 36 on 9 a couple weeks ago though so that was definately a good round.
