tell me who your fav jazz drummer is out of the choices and give some reasons ....
Bryan Blakey

Tony Williams.
Out of those, I would have to say either Art Blakey for his driving style or Elvin Jones for his energy on everything he plays... especially Afro Blue with the Coltrane Quartet live at Birdland... holy crap man.

I hate to 123, but where is Tony Williams. This is a grave injustice to such albums as "Emergency!"

Rashied Ali for his work with John Coltrane on Interstellar Space.

meh, normally it'd be Tony, but I put down Max since I love his solo style

Luckily this is a Best Drummer poll, and not Best Vocalist.

so have Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Papa Jo Jones. What does that have to do with anything? :p

Is it true that Buddy Rich is actually a huge pampas asshole. Ive never seen any private footage but a friend who has one of his DVD's says he is huge d.ick to his band. any confirmation?

Yes, it's rumored and strongly backed-up by some recordings of him yelling at his band members. Search for the recordings on Google. But I'm not saying that he really was a jerk, because I never met him.

I heard the recordings. He wasn't an a$$ but he definitely had a quick temper. I think a lot of his players probably deserved especially that trombonist who wouldnt shave his beard (David Panichi?). I mean if you're in Buddy Rich's band you should shave your beard if he tells you.

I voted Blakey, but it was close between him and Roach.
My favorite jazz drummer might be Paul Motian.

Louie Bellson should be on the list. Both Duke Ellington and Count Basie called him "the world's greatest drummer".
Of those on the list, I voted for Buddy Rich.
Come on, no Steve Gadd? The man has perfect tempo, now that is amazing. Eh oh well.

Yeah, out of those guys; prob max roach, gene krupa, elvin jones and buddy rich, i cant really decide. Steve gadd is #1 though. One if the younger guys i like is Andrew Fisenden, any aussies would probably know who he is. especially west aussies. I said buddy on the poll though.

Max Roach and Art Blakey are my favorite drummers ever, but I said Max on the poll. I just love his style.

Krupa. The guy's sense of swing was unmatched, and he's probably the most important player up there. Ed Thigpen is my favorite jazz drummer.

Elvin Jones.... I just love the work he's done.

Paul Motian is probably mine as well. But that may be just because the Bill Evans Trio is my favorite jazz group of all time. LaFaro is my favorite bassist.
I voted Rich because he's fun to watch.

well from the list it's gotta be elvin jones
but man, you have to at least give some credit to Cobb, the man's a monster, his stuff with mahavishnu and his bit on bitches brew, it's all stellar playing!

Don't get Jimmy Cobb, the very tame swing drummer who performed on Miles' "Kind of Blue", confused with Billy Cobham, the out-of-control swing/rock/funk/fusion/insane drummer who performed on... well, everything.

It's hard for me to choose between Max Roach, Gene Krupa and Art Blakey, but I went with Roach.

I don't think I could choose. They all have individual styles and all played different subgenres, so comparing it is irrelevant. I draw from all when I perform.

I put mine in for Elvin. I like his style, his spirit, his soul, everything he puts into the music. I saw him at the blue note in the village in 2002, I think it was. I really like his playing on albums like Crescent, and Juju.
