"You know what son, I love Led Zeppelin IV and I love Dark Side Of The Moon, but 'Piece by Piece' by Katie Melua is probably the best record I have ever heard" - Kevin Ellison......My dad
Ok, so I think it would be fair to say the following things:
1) My Dad had consumed a fair amount of drink
2) My Dad isn't a great lover of music and his knowledge is very limited
3) My Dad is a sucker for a pretty face/voice, and Katie Melua certainly has both.
Despite all of this I decided to give the album a close listen. I had already heard her debut 'Call Off The Search' and was vaguely impressed although remembered little of it. The new album rekindled my memory of her enchaning voice, and whilst catchier commercial songs like the single 'Nine Million Bicycles' were nice to listen to, the album hits it's peaks with the more bluesy tracks such as 'Halfway up the hindu Kush' and 'Shy Boy'. My favorite track on the album is 'Spiders Web' which is a combination of the things which I really like about her.
After hearing this I hurried back to listen to her first album. I discovered that I had perhaps overlooked an album which is just as good as the second. The highlights are again the bluesier tracks and my favorites are 'My Aphrodisiac Is You' and 'Crawling Up A Hill'; alongside the single 'Closest Thing To Crazy'.
Katie Melua has suddenly become one of my current favorite artists and from the most unlikliest of source (I never really listen to anything my dad says about music). Obviously the albums fall nowhere near the 'greatest record ever recorded' kind of material as my dad had suggested, they seem to lack the edge of some of those great records. Although the standout tracks are brilliant, I find that some of the bits in between can become somewhat boring. Despite a few dull moments however I would definately reccomend both albums, In Particular I would suggest the following tracks:
Crawling Up A Hill
Spiders Web
Closest Thing To Crazy
My Aphrodisiac is you
Piece by Piece
To those familliar with her music, what do you think? Has she something different from the current crop of uninspiring singer/songwriters, or is she nothing parricuarly different. If anyone would like me to send you a few of these songs i would be happy to, just leave your email address and I will send them over when I can.
