for 800 export is one of the most overrrated, underquality drum kits u can get. 800 is semi-pro price, pearl is beginner or beginner-intermediate at best. they are just very popular with the pearl name. they are made of poplar for petes sake..the cheapest of all woods mixed in a toilet.

go all birch or all maple or combo

mapex M birch
yamaha stage custom
gretsch catalina birch (the shell pack is going for 550USD on musiciansfriend!)
sonor 2005
PDP CX

for just a tad more (like 100-150 USD - basically 1 paycheck if ur job sucks butt), u can go up another level
mapex pro M
peace paragon
sonor 3005

i absolutely NEVER trust sales men when they go 'they're good for the money,' not buying tools, equipment, electronics, and ESPECIALLY drum gear.

I have a Pearl Export, and they are not nearly as bad as you guys are saying. Yes you could get a better kit for the money. Yes they are not fantastic. But they are not bad. Id say they are average. If you get good cymbals and nice heads, they are fine. They are by no means bad.

Check out this deal on musiciansfriend.com
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/449668/

Sonor Force 3003 for only 599.00.

They're way better then an Export. They don't have a ton of them though, so if you're going to get one, do it soon or they may run out.

seriously! same as the gretsch catalina birch! MF has awesome deals going on, but when u see deals as great as these that means they are getting rid of them and u need to decide quickly!

of course! any set can be tuned up to sound decent with new heads and can look good with new hardware and cymbals. but imagine if u went back to before u got the export, and got something like a pro M instead?

back to his question in case he still cares, EX is wrapped finishes, ELX is lacquered, EXR is wrapped but "radical" i guess

Man I'm so glad I didn't make that mistake. I got a Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau for a hundred $$$ less and I'm so happy. The export set at school licks floppy donky dicks. Thank god there's always the Tama peice of crap at school too otherwise I'd be stuck with poo for practise away from home.

My school has an export too, it is horrible, sounds a TON worse then mine at home. Its just a piece of crap. Mine at home looks good, sounds pretty good, and plays well. I paid 600$ for it, and its a 6 piece. I think that that is a pretty damn good deal. Yes if I could redo my decision I would buy something different, but I really don't see where all this export flaming is coming from.

Go with a PDP FS. All birch and in the same price range, or CX/MX/LX if you want maple for a wee bit more money.

Only difference is different finsish options between them. They are all poplar shells which are basically pretty low. They are overpriced for what they are. You could get better quality for the same price. Look into Yamaha stage customs, sonor 2005 and 3005's, Tama Starclassic or rockstar, Pacfic CX.

Punctuation is your friend.

An export with good heads and good tuning isn't a bad kit.
But you could get so much better for the amount you'd be spending.
