View Full Version : External Hard Drives?

Okay, so I currently am out of room on my computer and I thought a good alternitive would be getting an External Hard Drive, the only problem I'm clueless about them and clueless how to use one. I'm just basically clueless about them as a whole. But what I want the External Hard Drive for is holding music now, if I put all my music on there could I still listen to it on the computer? And I have 200 dollars to use so could anyone recommend me a good brand or type of External Hard Drive? I would like to get between 30 GB - 60 GB. And in the past I've had troubles connecting iPods via my USB ports so will that have any effect on the External Hard Drives?

An external hard drive works the same way as a USB drive, if you know what that is. You plug it inot the computer's USB port, and once the computer recognizes it, you can do anything with the files on the hard drive that you would do as if it was on the computer, so you could still listen to music and everything from it.
I just bought one about three weeks ago: 160 GB, $100; a pretty good deal. You probably will not need $200 if you only want one that holds 30-60 GB. A decent price on one is paying about a dollar a GB, maybe a little more, so look for hard drives that are about $30-70 or so.
If you're having problems connecting your ipod, then it might be a problem with the USB port, but it also could be a problem with your ipod.
Hope this helps. :thumb:

If you are in America I'll get you some links. A little cheaper then the above poster said. You can find a deal like his, though. I have a 160 gig and like it a lot. But you need USB2 or a firewire port. If your computer is newer (within a couple of years) you should have USB2.

I can only recommend this drive because I have it. I think another guy on here has an 80 gig version, too. It's a good drive for the price. They also have a 120 gig model. You'll see some bad reviews, but even the so called "best" makers get those when it comes to external HD's. And Fantom is a respected name, anyway. I've had two of these, and they never fail. If you just need a simple drive that works and is uncomplicated, this is it. This is the 160 gig version, because you have enough money and you'll be glad you bought it. But if you really don't want that much, the 80 gig version is the second link:

The 80 gig is on sale for $66 after rebate.

Well my computer is a Dell from a few years ago, the iPod would not work so I got a Creative Zen and that worked fine, so I don't know if maybe it was the iPod rather then the Computer's USB things. Yes, I'm American, thanks for the links I'll check um out.
Is it really as loud as they all say? Because I don't really want something that's more noticable then the computer.

Ok. If you don't have USB2 or firewire port don't even consider it. Get an internal instead. So check that out first. Especially since you will be using this as a primary storage device. I have a Dell 4600, nearly two years old, and I'm good.

Alright, but if its internal will that mean I'll have to get rid of my current one? Sorry if that is a dumb question but I'm not very techy.

nope, you can have more than 1 hard drive in your PC :thumb:
even if they were canadian

Yeah, definitely get an internal. They're generally cheaper, and faster. I've got two 40 gb internals right now, the original one I've had for 4 years, and the other for three. No problems with either of them.

Yeah. Your Dell might even have an empty slot for one. Mine does, right behind the one that's already in there. So it has to be taken out before the new one goes in. I also have a 4600 (they seem to be common) and that's why I went with an external. I'm the "other guy" with the Fantom 80 gig drive. Works well. I leave it on for hours and it's good. Gets a little warm, but that's to be expected. Pretty decent drive.

come to think about it, Internals aren't that much harder to install than Externals apart from SATA drives. IDE you just plug in and then set to slave in the BIOS.

If you want to get an external hard drive, I recommend getting an internal hard drive with an external hard drive bay. They work just as well and are cheaper. I'm too lazy to actually link you to any products, but maybe someone else won't be.

Hey Secks, I didn't mean anything by it. It's just the way I talk. I'm new around here and don't want to get off on the wrong foot. Not that it matters so much, just thought you should know. Sorry if I offended you. I meant no harm or insult.
