Opera Recomendations

I have been thinking of getting some opera music from the ol' library. The only one i know by name is Carmen so if you could recomend me the classics that I already know,and what is the name of the one with the sad clown especially?

Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story isn't an opera, but it's the perfect place to start. I'm gonna guess your sad clown one is Pagliacci's.

Not sure about the clown, but Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo" is very good IMO.
