I might buy a new drumset! I have 500 now, will have about 900 after my birthday (no comments saying I'm rich spoiled or w/e cuz 400 is alot to get for a birthday...I invite alot of friends. :p).
My brother is chipping down 100 and my parents will chip 300 as my gift.
So my budget is...$1300 give or take a few bucks.
Help me find my dream set, and tell me why! None of this:

A Tama starclassic is what I would get, but thats just me.

Well...assuming the budget will be 1300 for sure...go with what you said and get the sessions...or something yamaha...that would be sex
But i wouldn't assume that you'll get that amount for sure, cuz it's really easy to drastically over estimate something like that...
Yamaha Stage custom---what more is there to say? excellent sound as well as looks
Sonor 2005- birch shells and same as above
sonor 3005- all maple shells and same as above
starclassic maple-looks and sounds great. I love the starclassic birch snare though so maybe a starclassic birch, the birch snare is bloody loud and nice and cracky.

You wish buddy!
Honestly I would go with the 3005's myself. Well this is because that is exactly what I myself did. They are worth the price for sure, and the hardware is very sturdy. The finishes you can get are great to and hard to choose from.
I'm sure whatever you get though you will be really happy.
Panopticon
12-28-2005, 11:42 PM
Really, it depends on the hardware you get...
If you have good hardware...go for a shell pack. If you have been looking for good hardware, get a full kit.
If getting a shell pack i would go with the Pearl Sessions. I would have said Premier Artist's about 3 days ago but you've managed to steer me from them and i thank you for that...

Premier Artist's about 3 days ago but you've managed to steer me from them and i thank you for that...
Anytime
I think I'm just gonna get a shell pack, becuase I'm gonna get a rack after I get the kit, when I get more money, so it would just be a waste.
Panopticon
12-28-2005, 11:55 PM
Well for shell packs you got some choices. But you've also got some more choices if you up your budget to $1500.
All prices are from Musiciansfriend.com:
Tama Starclassic Performer ($1499.99)
Yamaha Oak Custom Fusion ($1346.00)
Pearl Session (SMX) ($1259.99)
Pearl Session Studio ($1139.99)
But you can also save up some more (like $300) and get:
Pearl Masters BRX Studio ($1799.99)
Pearl Masters Birch ($1799.99)
Good luck!:thumb:

12-28-2005, 11:57 PM
I got my Starclassic Performer for $900, and I love it. Definitely look into those.
You could also get a Mapex Saturn used under $1300, but you'd have to do some ebay searching and whatnot.

Nah I want it new. I'm done with used gear. I want it all new and shiny. :D
GooseFilms.net
12-29-2005, 12:03 AM
IMO, buying gear new is very, very stupid, unless you have no budget, or you actually have very specific wants that would merit customizing the new drumset. Basically, unless you're a professional drummer looking for sometihng very specific, I don't see why you would buy it new instead of taking used drums of a higher quality
Massik Kretal
12-29-2005, 12:11 AM
Well it's more self assuring when you buy a new kit. It just feels different to have new gear then used.

Mapex Saturn :thumb:
EDIT: Oh, I see. The Saturn is a total professional kit. They look awesome and they sound just as good and price wise they are some of the cheaper higher end kits out there. I'd firstly suggest Orions but if you can't find a deal on an Orion kit then I'd definitely suggest going with the Saturns. Happy now?

I would look into the Saturn or ebay if you can find a starclassic or somthing of the sort. The saturns are really great drums for the price, they are definitly pro quality and have an awsome sound. Just ask Loyton he bought some and is amazed with them.

I personally am bias and would say Stage Custom...I have owned 2 sets now, one outfitted with Paiste Sigz, and my current one with Zildjian A/K Customs. Its a very solid kit, The hardware is top notch...Add some new heads, and the Yamaha sounds damn great. Finish's on them are excellent. I get nothing but good reviews from those that sit on my set or hear my set, both on looks, sound, and hardware. For the price of 800-900 you cannot beat it at all for what you get in return. A Solid Kit all around.

What's wrong with the Premier?
Theres nothing wrong with the Premiers, its just that, I'm in Canada. If i were to get a Premier, and (godforbid) something broke, customer service would be a bitch seeing as how they are based in England, if i needed replacement parts, it would be crazy expensive to ship.
Also, Premier isn't a very stable company so I've heard, they've already been taken over by Yamaha once and just barely won the company back and are barely holding on. If the same thing were to happen, I'd be screwed even more.
Another thing with Premier is that if i wanted to expand my kit (ie. add an extra tom or bass drum or something) It would be extremely expensive ($500+ for an 8"x8" tom) because they have to be hand-made and shipped from England.

I'm not sure how many people know about conaway, but if you don't go to conawaydrums.com
All this talk about Tama and Yamaha (and everyone who has seen me post knows I don't like yamaha... damn japs *Just kidding*...please. Customize you set, conaway has a lot of impressive stuff. Why buy another beginer set(and no bull shiit about artist useing these drums... If you don't know that the companies basicaly do anything these big artist want [portnoy] to get their drums sounding perfect then you are pretty ignorant) Why not go off the end. Take another direction and you may be surprised.
To the thread starter, look into conaway. Get what you want, I'm not saying get conaway, but conaway does customization for prices that are non-existent. (8 piece for 1600, all drums they make are custom)

Yeah I suppose so. But I'm looking into a laquer finish you know. I don't think the can screw it up, especialy if it's just a stain and a clear coat. Unfortunatle I won't even be able to afford, even a conaway kit for about half a year. But I can deal. I've been playing the same kit for 4 years, a little while longer won't kill me.
I'm getting a brady snare first though(my avatar). $650!, which is insane for a brady block snare.(insanely cheap for those who don't know brady)

Laquer finishes are easier to screw up becuase it takes talent. Wraps are easy becuase anyone can just glue on some laminate on wood.

Nah, laquer takes the right eq. It only takes talent when you want a burst or a fade. I would never order another wrap. It just looks so cheap and trashy. Especialy after 4 years. I have a blue metalic wrap and you can really see wrinkles in it. plus some of it is starting to peal. But like you said, you get what you pay for.
More about conaway. They have a butt load of pics for being a small Co. most of the drums look pretty good.

Just kiddin' dude. I'm just a zildjian man. Sonor's good, and I personaly love all those, what you would call "popular" kits: Tama, Sonor, Mapex....in that order. But i'm looking into complete custimization and I definately can't aford c&c.
C&C is the only other company I would buy from. Well, tama, if it came to that. They just make such deep, clicky bass drums and great hardware. But dude if you're doubting conaway, don't take a chance. simple as that. Go for tama if it is a close second. Good choice on the starclassic...really the only great set they have. others are pretty much beginner

You know...I just realized something about conaway. He doesn't sell to dealers. Now, if you knew that bare with me. Companies sell their drums to dealers fairly inexpensive. I'd say dealers make close to +50% or +60% profit on a drum companies set. So if conaway are selling their drums for about as much as a tama or a premier set gos for...well then Conaway doesn't have as low of prices as I thought. He is selling them all for a lot compared to other compnies. I would say that a conaway set is sold on the net for a price equal to dw's price to dealers.
