Well I found out that I've been slapping my bass wrong scince day 1. I always that you pluck really hard with your thumb and pull away, it gets almost the sound as an actuall slap. I was always able to play the song with very little slapping and poping, but songs that had smoothe, fast, slapping/popping included I wasn't able to play. Well I found out how to really slap and started practicing this new technique. I rememberd Wintermule from that old elementy of slapping/popping thread and how it can hurt when you first start doing it. Well playing away, through the pain I was fine. Then I just couldn't take anymore and stoped. A few minutes later I look at the knuckle on my thumb...top layer of skin gone. I poped it raw, it's not bleeding or anything but it hurts to move it up and down. So I can't practice slapping or hitchhike :(. Comfort me in my foolishness.

I dont understand how people hurt themselves slapping(or DTing). You're not trying to hurt the bass, don't whack it so hard. The strings are harder then the skin on your thumb.
Either that or your just a bunch of wussies. No offense.

well jsut dotn hit it so hard for a while i mean its not as much hitting it hard as it is doing it right and also its kinda like drumming u need to bounce of the string
weird thing about slapping is it makes you start doing it on weird object like slaping on a desk

The strings are harder then the skin on your thumb.
That has no relevance to the point you are trying to make. If anything, it proves you wrong.

How so?
You dont ram your head into a brick wall do you?
No, you try to bring it down swiftly and gently and then back up, that way, you dont hurt yourself.
wow, that metaphor sucked ***. :p

If something is harder then the thing you are hitting it with, why wouldn't it wear it down?

Im not saying it isnt wearing your thumb down, im saying it shouldn't hurt, and if it does, then your doing it too hard(wearing it down too quickly).

I may have been doing too hard, but I thought it was because no calusis(sp) have ever been formed on any of my knuckles, which would enclude my thumb.
I want to go back and see if I can do it softer but I can't.

Actually, that happens when you are just beggining to play slap, so don't worry about injuring yourself or these guys comments on how it is not hard. Keep practicing. It's normal to slap your strings hard when you are just beginning because you still can't measure the strength required to get the "pop" of slap. Let the injury heal, and practice a little bit softer, until you know how to do it.
You are not going to learn how to do it right, if you don't do it wrong.

its not about hitting it hard..its like a rat-tail with a towel..its how fast you can snap it back that gets you the good clean thump sound

slap the back of your hand, if it hurts your slapping too hard.

Wrap your finger up with bandaids and keep playing. THats what I used to do when I first started playing and chunks of skin would fall off my left hand from practicing for so many hours straight. Then when you get better good and people tell you that you have musical talent, you say "no no, bitch. Hard work. I used to play as I bled."

some super glue would work well in this instance. and to everyone that said that he is slapping to hard or what ever, maybe he isn't. just because you have never hurt yourself from slapping doesn't mean that its not possable. i got a blister after 2 years of slapping when i was praticing double thumping for 2 hours. it happens, let it heal and start playing again

Is it misspelled or do you guys use the word bandage in the UK?
By the way, I like your picture (I have Cuban family). :thumb:

Bandage is a big sterile, white material that we wrap around the larger of any wounds recieved.
I think a bandaid is in fact what we call a plaster? Not sure.
Ah and thanks, Im really quite proud of it!

Congratulations on being part of an apparently small group of people who avoid the new mainstream trend that involves showing your ignorance to prove taht you are in fact a "rebel."

Bandaid is a brand of bandages. They're just so popular here that they've almost taken over the name.
Kind of like Bondo (brand name) with body filler (product).

While we are on the subject, how do you pop the top strings? I can't seem to do it.
