Yes I wrote the thread about placing the thumb firmly against the back of the neck but now on my new Ibanez SRX505 i can't get a real grip on the neck. On another forum somone suggested using real fine sandpaper. Rub up and down the neck enough to get a better grip. I am not too crazy about that idea. Has anybody tried it or have any other suggestions. Oddly enough on my Squire P bass I get a perfect grip.

Does the SR have a satin finish compared to gloss on the P bass?

The SR necks don't have a finish, I believe. At least, mine doesn't.
@TS: It's a different feeling neck entirely, so you might just need to play it a fair bit and adjust to the texture.

I say play it enough to get used to ir. Taking sand paper to it would be a bad idea.

Too lazy to type threadstarter.
And why don't you just, you know, get used to playing your bass the way it is? You don't want to damage it in any way by doing stuff that you have no idea what it'll do.
Besides, if it's new, and you alter it, you pretty much void the warranty, unless I'm mistaken.

just get used to it, I doubt every single SR owner sanded down their neck because their thumb was slipping. Could be down to technique

I have an SR506 as well, im almost certain it has a satin finish.
See, satin finishes dont show up as much as gloss, theyre not, well, glossy. And theyre not as sticky either.

True after having a horrible set up and having to get another preamp after the first one fried, i don't really want to mess with the warranty. Ibanez did send the store another preamp pretty quick.

Hmm. Maybe so, but if there is a finish on it (my particular bass) than I can't see it. But I could just be absolutely retarded.

Wait, doesn't the SRX series have maple necks and satin finishes?

I really wouldn't recommend sandpapering your instrument. If it's driving you so crazy that you can't play on it, I'd probably shell out the cash to get my neck refinished. Or I'd get used to it and use the money to rent a dancing monkey, or a nigerian slave or something.

Satin finishes are close to invisible. Its all about that silky smooth feel. If there were no finish, you would feel the diffrence.

I wouldn't do it. You can't reverse that kind of stuff.
Give the neck a good clean with a cloth.
Also, make sure your hands are clean and dry before you play the bass too.
As Bass Virtuoso said, you can't reverse that kind of stuff so its not exactly the best idea.

they have a satten finnish, mine has one (sr305dx). don't press firmly on the back of the neck, that will just make your hand/thumb hurt. it is best to just feel the neck, remember the thumb has no part in fretting so you shouldn't have to push hard on the neck. your thumb is there to let you know where the neck it, nothing more. half the time i don't even have my thumb on the neck at all.
