I recently got a DVD burner.
Whenever I burn a DVD, the video skips sometimes, which completely ruins the DVD. I know it's not the source file because the source file works fine on my computer.
Throughout the burning process, the write buffer jumps around from the high-90s to mid-40s to the low teens and back up to the 90s, and the end result is a crappy DVD.
The burner is a Toshiba SCR5372, and the software used is the included Nero OEM suite.
I don't know how to fix this. So, if any of you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
I know a tech support forum would be of better help, but I don't want to have to register there, with the chance that someone here can help me.
Thank you.

Most burners have a buffer underrun protection option. Make sure it is checked. It will make sure the buffer doesn't run out in the middle of recording. Also quit any unnecessary programs, and perhaps end some processes in the task manager if it is still a problem.
I say set the burn rate at a lower setting. That way it doesn't jump around.

Burn at 2x or 4x.
Close all programs that don't need to be open.
Don't touch your computer, don't open a window or minimize a window or anything.

Yes, try burning at a lower speed. You might have a shitty burner and/or media.
What kind of DVDs are you using and how much RAM do you have?

I have burned at 4x, and get the same results.
I'm using TDK DVD+Rs.
I have 1 GB of slow PC133 RAM.

^^If you use torrents download different burning software. A friend of mine experianced similar problems and a software switch fixed it. Although I don't know what she switched to, I do know she had been using the software bundled with the burner. Just do a little reseach and get something reputable/reliable. It's worth a shot.

I tried the original Nero I had (v6.3.1.10), and it gave me the same poor results.

Here (http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,118071,00.asp) is an interesting article. It may or may not contain something useful, as I am not familiar with DVD burning. I'm looking for more as you read this...

Here are a couple of forum links. Again, I don't know if any of this info will help, but it might contain something useful.

Thanks a bunch, guys.
I just updated the firmware, and I'll install the Nero update. Next time I burn (probably sometime this evening), I'll post my results.

btw, I just bought some 16x TDK DVD-R's and they're ****ty as well. my 16x burner only burns them at 6-8x. So it might just be a ****ty brand. Although mine don't skip. But you'd think 16x DVDRs would burn at 16x on a 16x burner.

Are they DVD+Rs or DVD-Rs? I did some research on my burner, and found out that it can only burn at 8x on DVD+Rs, but it can burn at 16x on DVD-Rs.

I have a dual-layer burner, too.
Alright... After the upgrade of Nero and the firmware upgrade, I burned another copy of the disc (at 4 and ran it through Nero's CD-DVD Speed (which analyzes the disc). The first copy had several "bad" blocks and several "damaged" blocks (I stopped the DVD test before it finished). The new burn had two "damaged" blocks, and the rest were good. It came up with 100% good because the "damaged" blocks weren't enough to even come up with a tenth of a percent.
Thanks to everyone.

Were you burning movies that were downloaded? Or ones that your ripped off DVDs?

One was a downloaded DVD-R rip, and the others were DVDs made from downloaded AVI files.
Nero (or WinAVI, etc.) can convert the AVIs/MPGs/WMVs/etc. to VOB files, which are recognized by DVD players.
I currently don't have a DVD player that can read DivX files, so I burn them to DVD files.

Were the DVD rips screwing up too?
If so, use DVD Dycrypter, IFO Edit, and DVD Shrink (if it has to be compressed).
If you need the links/setup exe's for these just tell me.
