recently i found a silver mt zion, and i love it. i've listened to "he has left us alone...." and "born into trouble as the sparks fly upward". i like he has left us alone best. i gave "lift your skinny fists..." by godspeed you black emperor a try, but it was too upbeat for me. i'm not very familiar with this type of music so i was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for really melancholy instrumental music.

Try the song Mellon Collie by the Smashing Pumpkins if you haven't already.

Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven (Don't know if you want classical)

Ozzy Osbourne - Dee
it's only 50 seconds of Randy Rhoades on guitar but it's really good.

Alice in Chains _ Whale and the Wasp
From what I remember of this song it has a sad tone, but that I havn't heard it in a long time.

Wha..?

Bwahahahahahahah

Do you have a pulse?

Anyways, try some Set Fire To Flames; it's exactly what you're looking for. Sings Reign Rebuilder is their best album.

I really don't see how f#a# infinty and Yanqui U.X.O. can be upbeat, but whatevz. Go with the Dirty Three and Mono. They are where it's at.

Sigur Ros, Mono, and EITS give me a sense of Hope.

I find Pelican to be gloomy.

Dirty Three and Set Fire To Flames are the best routes to follow.

Also check out:-
1. Deathprod - Morals & Dogma (eery dark ambience, exactly what you are looking for)

2. World's End Girlfriend - Farewell Kingdom (the japanese version of Set Fire To Flames, but more melodic)

3. Xinisupreme - Murder Licencse (noise noise noise. Good stuff)

4. Deathprod - Morals & Dogma
5. Deathprod - Morals & Dogma
6. Deathprod - Morals & Dogma

I find Pelican to be gloomy.

i'd only say that for some of their songs e.g. nightenday, i dunno, most of their songs are kind of 'not melancholy' to me

I don't think so. Life in Mono was the first "Mono" song I had heard, aswell, but the Mono albums are just instrumental, so I'm guessing it's a different (but still good) band.

Try Dreamend's "Passing". If you like that, get their album As if by Ghosts.

dirty three - ocean songs and gybe - f# a# infinity were excatly what i was looking for! both those are amazing.

i still have to listen to set fire to flames, mono, and deathprod.

sigur ros seemed pretty upbeat and i'm not sure about the singing, i'll need to give it a few more listens. explosions in the sky was pretty upbeat too, but good.

m83 wasn't for me. thanks though. that dreamend song was pretty good, but not as melancholy as i would prefer. i'll download more and check it out.

thanks guys.

I fail to see how Lift Your Skinny Fists can be described as "upbeat"...

But try F#A#(infinity symbol), I think that should be what you're looking for, that or Mono -Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky.

How could you have liked Providence? It's way too upbeat for you.

You might not want to even bother with Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada or Yanqui U.X.O. because those might have parts that have a beat also.

Anyways, listen to the Set Fire To Flames, I'm pretty sure it's exactly what you're looking for.

i didn't see anyone say rachel's. they pretty much fill the description perfectly. 'music for egon schiele' and 'systems/layers' are good places to start album wise.

i guess you can then go classical like Arvo Part or more modern with guys like Max Richter. the former has a song called 'spiegel im spiegel' that's a beautiful song that you will most likely enjoy, even though annoyingly it starts off so quiet you can't hear it.

also check out a band called esmerine, i think they are another godspeed side project..but i may be wrong.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada EP

I don't really like Godspeed that much, but this EP is brilliant. Both songs are one of the best post-rock experiences i've ever had. Moya is one of the nicest instrumentals you'll ever hear and the interview in Blaise Bailey Finnegan III is really .. i'm not sure how to describe it. Download it, buy it, whatever. Listen to it.

Try John Frusciante's album "The Will to Death", its really cool, a complete opposite of every Chili Peppers album, really melodramatic and passionate

Amber Asylum makes awesome classically-tinged melancholy instrumental music. Four girls with violins and cellos or some such.
