hey all what are some good mars volta songs? ive never really listened to them much but i've heard that they're good. (yes i know there is an fs on one of their songs, so you don't need to list that particular one).

thanks

you should probably start with the widow, if you are not into 10 minute songs and then let the other ones grow on you

I just got de-loused and i love every song on that album

vignus cygmund is good to

the widow is a good and pretty easy song to learn, it needs a frettless bass i think, but sadly i dont own one but it sounds cool fretted too.

have you seen how many fx pedals the dude from MV uses, its 19 or summit like that

I like Frances the Mute (their second album) more than Deloused... (their first album). You should just try to buy the cd, cause downloading songs from the Mars Volta would sound weird. Their songs blend in better in their right order.

Id just do "Inertiatic ESP" and stop there. For all the hype they get, I was let down by their albums, a bit of killer here and there, padded out by way too much filler.

This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed was one of my favourite songs, it's also probably one of the most normal sounding ones off De-loused (I haven't heard Frances the Mute yet)

I think the killer:filler ratio is up to the listener. Personally, Deloused and FTM are two very different albums. Like someone mentioned already, Deloused is more musical, while FTM is more experimental and ambient. I love them both. Definitely pickup Deloused, and give FTM a listen.

FTM features Juan Alderete on bass, Deloused was Flea and Justin Mendell-Johnson. Juan plays fretless on a few tracks of FTM, but not the whole album (at least I don't think so).

And his pedalboard is over 25 pedals if I am not mistaken.

i think omar has a few diffrent pedle bords, my guitarist (who bums omar) has a picture of him sat in the midle of a room wich as absolutley full of pedles and rack effects all pluged into eachother.
seems a bit pointles realy, good job he doesnt use that many live.

When I saw TMV live, I counted about 27 at Omar's feet, and around half that on a small table near his Orange amp stacks. Juan was cruising in the back with about 16-20, it was hard to tell if some were two pedals that looked like one, or one big pedal.

All in all, The Mars Volta are an extremely talented band, my favorite currently, their music is stupendously put together, while at the same time seeming to be falling apart at the seams. The bass and drums usually groove pretty solid while the guitar and keyboards wail to all extremes. I'd suggest, as has been the concensus so far, to listen to De-Loused and then FTM. :chug: Hope you enjoy.

I think you should start with listening to Inertiatic ESP (maybe along with Son Et Luminere, the intro), I think that would catch most people on to their music.

You should just listen to At The Drive-In instead.

While they are great, I still prefer the Volta. I can't say why, it's just.. more.. controlled emotion, I guess.

I actually heard FTM before I heard all Deloused and I really do prefer the former. I guess I really enjoy what some people view as "filler." I don't really see it as filler, it's just part of the songs to me. But yeah, tmv = coolness.

Btw, it should be Carpe Noctem, not noctis.

Agreed. I especially liked what they did with the salsa rythm at the end of one of the songs. TMV has more flavor, in my opinion. Its more cultured.

well to start with, i recommend "Concertina", "Eunuch Provocateur", and "Cut that City". those are the 3 on the Tremulant EP, and that was made right after ATDI, so it has less of a prog feel, and is more raw and driven and heavy.

i loved FTM for a longggg time, until i realized it was just pretentious garbage and i re-fell in love with Deloused. overall Deloused has more staying power and although it may not have as much weirdness as FTM, the weirdness it has is:
1.) better
2.) more thought out
3.) not pointless

whereas FTM just has random segments of pretentious ambience that take so long you need to fat-forward 5 minutes to hear the song you wanted to hear.

and i know, Omar describes these segments as "intermissions, like a movie", but really, i don't care. it's chirping and beeping. that's a crappy movie.

also, some cool info, over 200 FX pedals were used by Omar on FTM, which is pretty cool. another cool fact, Deloused was recorded in the Houdini house, which is supposedly haunted, and apparently there were weird sounds that happened in other rooms while they were recording and they didn't bother to take them out. i'm not sure what qualifies as those, but apparently they're there. meh.

that's my favorite song on that album, and by the band. It seems easier to listen to than most of their songs, without lots of painful noises and creepy crap in the background

I don't care if these guys are in one of my current favorite bands, ATDI blows. Down with emoXcore.

Yes. :thumb: Not terribly hard, but very fun to play. In fact, all of Take The Veil is fun to play.
I love the bassline to Eriatarka during the verse. It's piss easy, but it all fits so perfectly together with the vocals and the other instruments' parts.

first of all, ATDI is not emo. listen to Heroin.
second of all, have you heard ATDI's early punk records? get "Alfaro Vive, Carajo!".

I never got into The Mars Volta. I've heard some of their stuff and it's impressive, but it never did it for me. It's not my thing, really...

Didn't Flea play bass in one of their songs?

By the way, I love you for mentioning Heroin, sr800...Heroin, Angel Hair, Antioch Arrow, etc....that's stuff is what "emo" is. ATDI is like...not emo, but still pretty good.

Gav you should learn to play Cicatriz ESP of off De-Loused, it's very simple but so much fun, also "take the veil cerpin text".

And the best ATDI song is "Cosmonaut", but that's another story.

Flea played on the entire Deloused album except Televators, which featuered Just Mendell-Johnson on upright (or electric upright) bass.

I had the displeasure of having a coworker bring in 4 of their albums, and I couldn't really enjoy any of them.

Heh, alright, I'll see if I can dig up an MP3 and tab it out myself or something...darn music industry and their suing of tablature websites!

EDIT: Yep, Paul R's got it...Sunny Day Real Estate, City of Caterpillar, Saetia (although the last two are more screamo), etc.

I definetly love the atmosphere both albums create, it's a musical experience.

once you hear Can, Drive Like Jehu, you see how much TMV took influence from others before them.
not to say they aren't good, but as far as being one-of-a-kind and unique goes, the bands that they got their sound from seem to go unrecognized.
moreso Can, but Drive Like Jehu is where they got their intensity in TMV and ATDI from, for the most part.
