View Full Version : Underrated rock bass performance albums?

Yeah, what rock albums do you think are underrated (Bass-talking)?

The only one that comes to my mind is Fashion Nugget by Cake. It's not fret-wanking, it doesn't have a bass solo, but the bass is so ****ing groovy on songs like "The Distance", "Daria" and "I will survive".

Quadrophenia by The Who

John Entwhistle is constantly called the best rock bassist on the history of well... bass, and Quadrophenia is one of the top The Who's albums. Miles away from being underrated.

Wolfmother. The bass player/organist is pretty good, but the style of music they play makes it so the guitar overshadows it.
Plus he's got a really nice Rickenbacker tone.

All albums by the group Clutch

Clutch is a great band.

Id also like to add:

Anything by Stone Temple Pilots. Robert Deleo is a very funky jamerson-style player that never gets any recognition. Tunes like "Interstate Love Song" show his playing abilities.

Alice in Chains -- Dirt, Jar of Flies, Self Titled, etc. I forget exactly which albums have Mike Inez on bass but he deserves credit.

All the Pantera albums, Rex Brown is an awesome bassist.

Duff's style in Velvet Revolver hasnt changed that much. The guitar work between slash and Dave is tighter than slash and izzy so it covers duff up a bit.

But he stands out less and has less cool little fills imo. But that is in part due to VRs style. GnR had kind of space for Duff to move in VR doesnt to the same extent.

True, its too bad that the band is so hated that no one really pays attention to the bassist. He should leave and form another band. Actually if the booted out Durst and changed thier name, find a new frontman they could make a comeback. They should look at Audioslave, Velvet Revolver.....it can be done.

All of Alice In Chains' stuff. You usually don't notice at all how much of a role the bass plays to the general melody and flow of the song. But once you pay attention, it's really an eye-opener on how it's supposed to be done.

Also Kyuss.

Good bassist or not, Limp Bizkit is an awful band. I liked them at first, but then they just kept on releasing progressively worse albums. Sure, Wes Borland is a good guitarist, Sam Rivers (is that his name?) is a good bassist, but that generic nu-metal music that they write is just very, well, generic and lame.

Anyway, since I recently got into them in the last few months, I've found that the bassist for Franz Ferdinand knows what he's doing, on both their debut self-titled release, and their more recent one, You Could Have It So Much Better.

PS. Audioslave and Velvet Revolver stink too.

I just got truANT the other day from Alien Ant Farm. And the bass work is a very solid effort.

On Never Meant, Tye Zamora pulls of some pretty harmonics. And Bass Harmonics isn't a common thing in rock albums, but niether are bass chords, which he pulls off nicely in Tia Lupe. He also has various groovy lines in his other songs.

I agree, especially the first album. "21st Century Schzoid Man" gets pretty crazy during the Mirrors section. It takes quite a bit of stamina and memory to play those 10 minute songs, even if they aren't too hard (for example Epitaph).

flea is being so underrated on that album. just because people are not used to hear him play on that album like on his earlier album doesn't mean its not good bass work. i think flea captured every melody of the song and every rhythm to its best. just because flea doesn't do a lot on the bass doesn't mean he doesn't do a lot on the music.

I know he's not a rock bassist but i saw Hunter from AFI earlier and he's more punk, but I'm gonna have to say Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio is a highly underrated bassist, if you list to Trio's earlier stuff his bass lines have lots of little complex fills and he uses lots of variations but on the new trio stuff he has dubbed down a lot of his playing and concentrated more on his vocals.
Listen to the albums Goddammit and Maybe I'll Catch Fire to see what I mean.

I think Duff is criminally underrated.
I used to think that Duffs basslines had became boring. True, they're not as complex as the GnR days, but if you listen really hard, he still has his fair share of complex fills. You have to listen for them because his new basses don't cut through as much as the ones he used in GnR.

You do know on that album, the singer did everything. He played lead and rhythm guitars, bass and programmed the drum machine. Listen to that song and in particular the drums, the snare hits are so precise it just screams drum machine.

Nonetheless that bass part in Fermented Offal Discharge is awesome.

Mendez of Opeth is quite underrated. If you watch the Lamnetations DVD with the making of D&D you see how much he puts in. On the live performances he adds a fair few bits into acoustic sections and plays apreggios of chords at about the 18th fret.
