Anyone burned by buying games used? I've bought 2 used games in the past 3 weeks and BOTH did not work. One, final fantasy 8, did not work even though it wasnt scratched. Seconed, Final fantasy Dawn of souls for the game boy advance did not work either :(. You would think that it's mighty hard to **** up a cartridge game but they did it somehow.
I've bought about 5 of my gamecube games used. All of them have worked perfectly fine. It depends on where you buy them from.

I bought em from game stop. you would think that they TRY the games before they sell em too you.
I got mine for $20 cheaper and only played like 3 or 4 times.

I haven't bought a new game since the first day release of FFx-2 (nov. 2003?) and everyone of the worked (the old games I bought).

You would think that wouldn't you. However...it's not true. My friend's Halo 2 got messed up somehow and would not play at all...and he sold it for thirty bucks to game stop. They didn't test it at all before buying it.

I think most stores don't have guarantees for used games...which is a bit of a rip but hell, they're not testing them, so they need to make money and that's the bottom line.
*is buying a used Silent hill 3 tomorrow*

I buy all my used games from Game Stop. They've all worked. I've gotten Resident Evil (remake), Hunter: The Reckoning, Tiger Woods 2005, and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X all used and they've worked perfectly.
I'm picky and always want the instruction booklet though.

Yeah my copy of Megaman X5 doesn't work, that's the only trouble I've ever had.

Bleh, I couldn't find a used silent hill 3 so I picked up 4 (which I haven't played before) and it's not holding up its end of the bargain (gameplay wise).

Why would a game on a disk not work if it isn't scratched or visibly damaged? Every game I've bought used worked perfectly except one, but that was when my xbox refused to read any disks.

When I played on consoles I would buy almost nothing but used games. Never had a problem except once or twice. And of course you could always return them. Pretty good deal.

I have a couple of preowned games, but they all work fine, which is suprising, seeing as my copy of Hitman 2 is covered with stratches. :smash:

There is a thing called 'Disc Doctor" which 'resurfaces' games. It works maybe once but sometimes ruins the game to the point of no return. That's what I think was done to it.

Burned/Downloaded games don't usually work online if they need a key.
Which is probably what his question was about.
If someone bought, installed, and traded back a game after using the keygen then yes, it might cause you problems if you tried to play it online.

I actually bought alot of my Xbox games used and they work fine.
But my Xbox all of a sudden started getting slow and giving the old "there is an error with your disc..." message, even happens with new games. Anyone else have or know what the hell this means? Is it just dusty in the inside or what?

Used to buy used when I would play with my girl(ex). N64 and PS1. Never had any problems, really. Now the crappy used systems we would play on are another story.....

Also, most chain retail stores will accept a return of a used game if it doesn't work the first time you try to play it. They probably won't give you your money back, but they'll give you another copy of the game, or maybe credit.

Well I bought Resident Evil 2 $9.99 for the PS1 but I didn't bother to check it until got home and realize that it was for the pc so I return it back, but they didn't have one for the PS1 so they gave my money back which I was surprise. Then I went and bought Final Fantasy Tactics Advance new for $9.99 at Toy r Us, lol cheaper then buying it used.

The vast majority of games I buy are pre-owned, and I've never had a bad one yet. You can buy CD/DVD drive cleaners that will sort out your lens a treat. They're about a fiver.

i use e-bay quite often to buy games and i've never had any problems with any of them.
i also buy a lot games off a second-hand store i know in Japan. its amazing how the Japanese manage to keep their games at such good quality. not even one page of a manual is damaged.

i heard some game publishers/developers (probably just EA) might be cracking down on used games stores in the future. guess they lose some money, but who wants to buy/play rubbish games and not needed updates.

I recently bought the new midnight club game and my xbox say the game is scratched or damage(you know that thing that comes out.) The game seems to be in good condition but it still shows that message. I have to open and close the xbox drive and it eventually works. Does anyone else's xbox do that?

I usually just buy new and then sell them on amazon for nearly full price after I'm bored with them.
After scratching them of course!
I remember I couldn't beat Resident Evil 1 on the GC because my copy was used and everytime I opened a door, it would freeze. I just fixed it by wiping it down with a cloth and warm water. It works now.
I just bought Shadow of the Colossus used today from Sam Goody, even though I didn't know it. Sam Goody is so shady.
