This thread may have been done before, but...
Any fans? Favorite albums, bands, future of the genre(s)?
I have some favorites: Slint (of course), A Minor Forest, Lightning Bolt, Hella, some Don Caballero, Volta Do Mar, Deerhoof, Boredoms, Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth.
I might strecthing it a little.
Yet, I don't really like Shellac
Discuss.
I thought Math Rock was just rock in different time signatures. Then again I don't know anything about Math Rock.

That's true, but it's much more.
Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterised by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, stop/start dynamics and angular, dissonant riffs.

Nevermind. I guess I do listen to Math Rock.
Big Black and Slint are aiite.

The Jesus And Mary Chain
Sonic Youth
The Velvet Underground
Kraftwerk
I think some of those would go under noise rock and avant garde, and I kinda like those bands.

Sonic Youth are fabulous (especially earlier), as are My Bloody Valentine, Velvet Underground, and to a certain extent, Yo La Tengo, Broken Social Scene, and Pixies.
Speaking of noise, I just got a Keiji Haino album. He is one crazy cat.

Heard of Cheer-Accident? They were playing a couple of shows with Sleepytime a while back. I heard they kind of suck live, but I really like their recorded music.

Even so, those three genres/whatevers don't belong in one thread.
I think I'll make a thread called "All things bluegrass, disco, prog opera, etc..."
...shitty example, but still.

avante garde in music usually refers to modern classical that did weird things aka minimalism, serialism, ect. It involved a lot more thought then 4 guys trying to make the ****tiest possible noises with popular instruments.

comets on fire rock, but i duno if i could classify then as math rock, more stoner/psychadelic. I really like volta do mar, they are like the only math rock band ive heard. Many different bands like the sounds of animals fighting take reference from math rock.

Yeah it is. What about Avant-garde jazz?
well, thats avant jazz, which is rightfully named so because it builds/expands upon jazz with that "avant-garde" vibe
avant-garde is just a phrase

I like Heavy Vegetable - they were mentioned on this link ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_rock - Had no idea they were math rock though.

yeah, avant-garde bands are just bands ahead of their time in any genre. plus, i don't think i've ever heard any math rock, so i don't really get what it is.
Behold...The Arctopus are great.
Avant-Garde like Frank Zappa? Mr. Bungle? Arcturus? Good stuff, if that's what you're talking about.

In terms of start/stop dynamics and dissonant riffs, Orthrelm must be the king of Math.
Wanker is right, these three genres are completely different: How can you singularly categorize Don Caballero, Melt Banana and Phantomsmasher? You can't.

I would say hella, merzbow, melt banana, and omoide hatoba are the best.
But as far as math goes, i think meshugga owns the genre.

For the love of god, someone please recommend more bands like Faraquet. I've almost never been in this forum before and haven't been on mx in months, and then I come into one thread in here and stumble across the freaking band I've been looking for.
I'll be looking through this entire thread for more bands, but if you guys could recommend bands similar to Faraquet that would be much appreciated.
Edit: After listening to a couple 30 second clips of Faraquet on iTunes I bought The View from This Tower. I really like these guys, and since I feel like listening to them instead of homework, I figured I would write here why I like them a lot.
First of all, their music is complex and engaging. If you've listened to and seriously played jazz for the last 3 years, it becomes difficult to listen to music that doesn't appeal to your intellectual side. Musically, I still think that jazz has waaay more interesting things going on, and if they had incorporated more of those aspects into their music then I would say that these guys would be up their with The Bad Plus on the "innovative scale", but they're still incredible. And since I've made the comparison to jazz, I'll go on to the next thing I like about these guys...
Composition. This doesn't really apply to any rock fans, but I think one of the things lacking in a lot of jazz artists is composition. I find that a lot of improvisation can work even better if placed in a compositional setting.
Rythmically I think these guys are doing something that very few other bands have done. They aren't as "complicated" as some prog bands, but it doesn't sound like they're putting in odd time sigs for no reason. I think Meshuggah is another band that has accomplished this, but for some reason Meshuggah has decided that they don't like chords, so almost all of their music is based around less than four notes in each song. Fortunately Faraquet decided not to do this.
Faraquet is catchy. I think catchy is an underrated commodity, especially by 'intellectuals'. It pisses me off when people say "God I can't get this crappy song out of my head!" The fact is the song is really catchy because it's doing something right. Catchy songs appeal directly to the romantic side of your brain, and there is nothing wrong with that. As I said already, I think they also appeal strongly to the intellectual side as well, so Faraquet is doing well on both sides.
Well, there are probably other reasons why I like this band, but I think I'll stop there, I've already written too much. These guys are great, if there are other bands like them then I'd love to hear them.

If you like Faraquet - I heavily suggest you check out The Dismemberment Plan. Its slightly more pop-orientated and definitely alot more eclectic stylistically, but the ingredients which make Faraquet so appealing to yourself are all there - odd time signatures, mouth-watering hooks, individual virtuosity but an untouched cohesiveness in their playing etc.
Start off with Emergency & I, then ...Is Terrified. If you like Faraquet you can't really go wrong with these two.
