View Full Version : Fiver with a high C

I've been playing a few sixstringers for a while now (none I own, but some I've come across at stores and stuff like that) and I really wanted one for the longest time, but I realized that I didn't really use the low B at at all, only the high C.
So my question is this: If I get a fiver and string it to use a high C, would I have to buy a sixer set of strings or are there packs with EADGC? Sure, I could buy it seperately, but I was wondering if that wouldn't create a slightly uneven sound..
Still, it's not really a big deal. I'm just really hyped about fivers with high Cs now. Man, I want one.

Yeah I'm going to make my 5er A tenor. I think the easiest way is to just buy a six string pack to be honest.

I suppose if you bought a four string set and then a high c of the appropriate gauge and same brand it would be the same tone, but thats dumb.
Just get a sixer set and save the low b incase tuning tenor isnt for you.

get a six string, I dont use my B when practicing by myself but when playing in bands, it is incredibly useful.
For the record, when I can, I use the Low B to play lines an octave lower, can make lines fun and adds variety to them

I like doing really slow slides on the B string.
EDIT: I dont use it much in bedroom practice either though

it is quite good for low slides but its a bit too low for me, nothing beats the nice powerful slide of the E string for me:thumb:
You could just buy a pack of 6 strings, but i think the cheaper way to go is to buy a pack of 4 strings and buy a seperate (sp) C string.

I just buy the 6 string packs... its less complicated, my teacher buys a D'Add 4 pack, then a GHS High C seperate he feels D'adds are to thin. with the HighC.
Playing Chords i beautiful with HighC.

I'd love a 5 string tuned ADGCF; I'm sure that would be even more complicated to buy strings for.
Yeh. It'd be great for soloing and stuff. Pain in the *** though.

I'd just get a 6er pack.
But when you do this try to get high gage strings because remeber ur gunna be putting a E string in a B string nut groove you dont want any buzz or wear on the nut...

People call bases tuned up a fourth from tenor basses "alto" basses. Higher than that, you're in piccolo bass range, a term coined by Stanley Clarke. Higher than that, and you're just stupid.

I tune my 5er tenor and i just use the light end of a 6 stringer set so yes you would use EADGC

Would it not be F#, or am I geting muddled up.
Anyway, I think it'd be a lot easier to get a sixer pack, but you'd also have to get the bass preoperly set up to play tenor - at least that's what I've been told - and the nyou couldn't change to using a low B string

I need to have it set up right for just using a high C.
Anyway, I'm back to considering saving up for a sixer, it would be silly to just throw the string away, I never know when I could be needing it.

you could keep the low b as a spare if youd ever want to go back to using it

muddled, dude...F# is a fourth down from a B...

What about piccolo bass?

Nope, it's F. Basses are tuned in perfect fourths. An F# is an augmented 4th, which is the tritone (the most dissonant interval EVER!!!!)

A piccolo bass is like a guitar with 4 strings and wider spacing, right?

No, the minor 2nd is much worse.

It's the same octave as a guitar, but there's still the long scale and string spacing.

He's talking about a bass tuned a 7th up from standard, not a 2nd down.

I personally wouldn't go past 6. I'm quite content with my BEADGC tuning.

Ohh ,**** sorry about that. Got the direction mixed up, high not low.
I've been lplanning to get a 7 string with a low F# for too long

Make sure you try before you buy. 7's are not for everyone.

I was the same way when i bought my 6. I used the C 100x more then the B, but after having it for a while you find it to be quite nice to have a B to fall back on when ur looking for resolve under the E, its always nice to know the B is there, and you can also use it to get a thicker sound out of some notes above the 5th fret. I recommend getting the 6 over the 5 if your dilemma is just about not using the extra string, because you will once you have it.

I bought a five-string with the intention of tuning it tenor, but I decided I like the B-string. I never got around to trying it out with a high C. I use the B more than I would a C, anyway.

Why not? Have you ever tried anything more?
I personally would love to get something ridiculous like a 9, but probably no more than that (an 11 is pretty stupid, I think).
