Was having a look around the web and found the following.

Has anyone heard of them, and if so what are the general views of their basses.

Thanks

Heard of them a lot over at talkbass, head over that way and do a search, you'll find plenty of info. Most of what I have heard is good.

They are amazing. Really amazing, based in Carlisle in England I think.
My teacher has a 5 string, fretted. beautiful wood and the electronics and PUP's are ace. Best bass ive ever played IMHO, with my Rick coming up soon behind.

Yeah, there plenty of these high-end, hand made botique basses floating around. They're all likely extremely high quality, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg to get them.

^^^You'd be suprised, there are some suprisingly affordable custom luthiers out there.

I've played one, a guy who plays with some of the bands at the hotel where I work uses one when he's not on an electric upright, it's a 5 string, fretted. It's about 10 years old, he says, pretty good, played well but wasn't bright enough imo, despite having new strigns on it! He even let me fiddle with his EQ but I still didn't love it. We talk bass when we see each other, and talk about the virtue of Kubicki :D

From the site:

Construction philosophyOur philosophy has always been to treat electric basses as acoustic instruments first. Electronics are important - but only to the extent that they can enhance what is already inherent in the bass: the fundamental tone must come from the wood!

As a general rule, anything with a specific gravity over about .85 (such as Bubinga, Cocobolo and all the Rosewoods) have a tendency to make the bass 'growl'. When light, resonant timbers like Swamp Ash, Alder or Sycamore are incorporated into a body, they give a clear open, 'hi-fi' sound.

Slightly heavier woods such as regular Ash and Maple add a little more brightness and punch, and those medium-weight, darker open-grained timbers such as Mahogany, Walnut and Lacewood emphasise the mid-range, which is great for classic fretless sounds and a fat, warm clarity in fretted basses.

Interesting, they seem to know what they are talking about.

I was checking them about the other day, then stopped when i realized that aqua burst J-series is like 3000 us bucks.

overwaters are beautiful. saw some in a shop next to warwicks (the expensive bass corner) and the overwaters just blew them away. anyone know if they have a show room in Carlisle cos i'm down there tomorrow?

They are expensive, hand-made basses. I've got to say, whilst I've never got round to playing one, for every compliment I've heard, I've had a bad comment as well...they certainly look the business, and when you're spending a few grand gbp on a bass to your own specs, you'll generally be sure of what you're ordering!

I think there are other luthiers out there in the UK (Jaydee, Goodfellow, John Shuker) who would challenge Overwater - but then they probably haven't been around as long as this company.

I noticed a 4 in the Progress series, but that was it. I suppose they prefer making ERB's. These basses are definetly beautiful, I'd loe to give one a try. :naughty:
