1. What are the srewy things on top of cymbals to tighten them and keep them in place and can you buy them from music stores?
2. Can you buy bass drum heads with ready-made port holes, are they more more expensive and if so how do you make your own?
Thanks to anyone who can help.:thumb:
EDIT: Also how doyou prunounce 'Remo' because I don't want to look like a fool in the store

Wing nut my friend. Just ask them for some wing nuts, check your stand and see what size it is...It should be either 6mm or 8mm. As for the port hole you can buy a head with the hole in it, or get a template and do it yourself...Why is it you want to port it though?

yeah, just cut out some card board or cut round a bin with a stanley knife
or jsut get a regular canned food can and cut around it or the remo reso heads come with a circle you can do it yourself with. jsut slap the circle on the head and cut around the inside of it. quite simple really.

Thank you!
The reason i want a port hole, well it's stupid really but every take I want to add a pillow or take something out or anything like that I have to unscrew the whole head and it takes ages but if I had a port hole I could easily get things in and out of it. Also it looks kewl. :D

How do you measure the cymbal holder to find out what size you need?
Also another question (sorry) does the quality of the head or the quality of the strainer or both affect the quality of the snare's sound?

If you reall must cut a hole...at least get the proper tool... it runs about 7 bucks... a hole cutter.

i would say they are universal.
both affect the quality but the head is more important

Ah good hopefully I'll be getting a Remo snare head tomorrow. My snare sucks it has a buzz even when it's tuned well, it's just a bad snare. I'm hoping to get this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/443670/
And as for the port hole I can always use a template and a scalpel if i don't get a pre-made one.

it's a great deal, but a coated ambassadors set would be a LOT better

I don't like coated tom heads. Sounds are okay, but I just hate the look of them, I don't know why...

If you want ato make a perfect port hole.. take some tomatosoup can or something, make sure It's too friggin hot en you just push right thru it.. y know what i mean to say??.. and make sure the hole is not more then 4" away from the side and that the hole isn't much bigger than 6 or 8"..

Do you think I will get a Remo Pinstripe Value Pack and a bass drum head with a port hole for £50? (Not $)

the only ones i know of are that are already ported aquarian regulator and evans EQ3. i have the EQ3 and i must say i wish i had a coated PS3 or coated amb..(the EQ3 is diplomat weight) and just ported it myself. theres no chrome rings for the 5" hole on the EQ3 anyway (they are sold as 3, 4, 6)

That is way better than the pinstripe pack and it is also clear. If I were you, and valued the tone of your drums go with that pack over the pins.

looks good man. a couple of pointers...
try straightening out those tom angles, your heads probably won't last if you keep them like that.
ii would also raise your snare a bit, but that's just me, it would makeflls easier.
looks really clean and nice though.

Yeah I have sorted out the angles now, it feels so much better even though I've hit the rim a few times and dented my hickory sticks :(

Last time I tried cutting my own hole (A few years ago) I ended up making a pointed oval.
