I got a 3 piece meinl effects set for xmas with a 10" splash, 12" china and 18" china. i'm just unsure about positioning. i have messed around with a few set ups, but don't fee comfortable yet. should i go size order?

go in whatever order you want. its all personal preference. try new setups and see what you like most. all that matters is that it feels comfortable to you.

is size order not a good idea? i'm sorta running out of ideas :(

i like the splash just in between your hihat and your first high tom. just above the hihat, the minichina in between your high an low tom (if you have two toms) and your china on the right just behind your right crash cymbal (so when you look to your right you'll see: crash, china)

Put the splash on an arm on your crash stand (between your hats and crash). Put your chinas kind of next to the floors tom(s), biggest nearer the tom-toms and the smallest next to it. Unless you already have a ride cymbal there, that we be an okay setup.

i dont see why it would be a bad one. if you like it and its comfortable then its not a bad idea.

Here is how i have mine set...You can get a pretty general idea from it..In these pics i have my splash directly in the middle, of my 2 main 18" crashes...on each opposite side of the big crashes i have my 2 smaller ones...with my ride somewhat under the smaller crash on the right...with the china a little over the ride.Expieriment dude..It will take a bit of time to find the perfect spot for each that you are comfortable with

I only have a 15" fast crash, 20" ride, and a 10" splash...but when I finally get a 17" crash, I'm going to have it set up as follow:
-15" crash above and between the hats and 1st tom
-10" splash directly in center above 2 toms
-ride at the typical spot, just to the right of the 2nd tom (low!)
-17" crash above and between the 2nd tom and ride

very typical setup, but it works great for me.

EDIT: or pretty much like joseph's setup, minus the 3 extra cymbals. that looks totally ideal to me.

Set up the ones that you will use more often in a comfortable and easily accessible spot and go from there.

Try putting the splash right in front of your hats, the mini china right behind your hats, and then have the large china medium high and to your right, as much in front of you as possible.
