We have a 'Best programs to download' thread mainly for Windows users, and I think we should have one for the Mac users among us.

If this thread doesn't become very successful due to the amount of mac users on the site, go ahead and close it. I am aware of a fair few mac users, though.

These are just a few I know of, so people add to it if you use some good programs. They are in no particular order or groups.

Spotlight - This is a search function, which is a quick, easy way to get to any file on your Mac.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/spotlight/

Safari RSS - Scan all the latest news, information and articles from thousands of websites in one simple-to-read, searchable article list delivered right to you. The magic of Safari RSS means you stay on top of your favorite interests without feeling like you’re ever missing out.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/

iChat AV - An IM program which allows you to talk to upto 10 participants visually with high quality audio. AIM profiles can be used in iChat.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/

QuickTime 7 - QuickTime 7 makes the future of video crystal clear with new features including user-friendly controls and pristine H.264 video. Upgrade to QuickTime 7 Pro and capture your own movies, then share them with friends and family via email or .Mac.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quicktime/

VoiceOver - An accessibility interface that offers you magnification options, keyboard control and spoken English descriptions of what’s happening on screen. If you have a visual impairment, VoiceOver enables you to work collaboratively with other Mac users or work on their computers without assistance.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/voiceover/

AppleScript - Everyone who uses a computer knows the challenge of performing the same series of tasks over and over again. For example, try to add a prefix to the names of 75 files in a folder and you’ll soon realize how time consuming and stressful repetitive actions can be. Isn’t there a easier way? Yes. It’s called AppleScript.
AppleScript is an English-like language used to write script files that automate the actions of the computer and the applications that run on it.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/applescript/

iCal - A calendar on your desktop, easy to use and very useful.

More information mon this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ical/

DashBoard - Check the time, watch the weather, track flights, view stock prices and find a local restaurant. Instantly. With a single click, the Dashboard zooms across your Desktop, giving you fast access to nifty widgets designed for fun as well as function.

More information on this, here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/dashboard/

You can also downloads loads of different widgets from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/

Windows Media Player 9.0 - A very basic version of the Windows Media Player, for when you've been sent a song/media file and it's not playable through iTunes/Quicktime.

This can be downloaded, here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=

iTunes - Obviously, most of you know about this as it comes already installed on your mac (I think). But this is a programe for playing all your music/videos. There is an Music Store inside the program where you can purchase music and videos. You can also download poscasts from the Music Store too.

iSquint - This one's for all you people with iPods. If there's a video file, which can't be played on your iPod this is the application that will convert it for you, so it can be put onto your iPod.

Download this, here: http://www.isquint.org/

Most of these programs can be downloaded from here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

It should be somewhere, as Automator is completely based on Apple Script. Under Applications should be a folder called AppleScript, at least on my Mac it is. Maybe XCode installs it there though, I'm not 100% sure

What is a good aim program for the mac. My school had 3 versions on their macs and they all sucked hard.

Adium is the best you can get in terms of IM on the Mac. Supports a shiet-load of protocols and services, highly customizable interface, a lot of cool scripts as add-ons etc. Check that out for sure

Took the freedom to add Smultron to the list. It's by far the best HTML-text editor I got my hands on. And it's free :)

Here's a question. What do you use to look at .pdf files on the mac.

Perhaps something other than preview?

I got a widget that displays random futurama quotes, which is awsome. I also discovered the sheer coolness that is the f9 key.

One odd thing. With Adium, I can sign on fine with 2 Aim and an MSN account and talk using any one of the three, but I can only see the buddies of the first thing I sign on with. Is there any way to display the other names?

Ok, so I read about this on my favorite Mac News Site, and this looks like a great thing.

This program, FileRun, is supposed to be a replacement for the Finder in Tiger (10.4.x). List of the features:

Download and upload files with the integrated FTP Client
Search files with Spotlight or the "normal" file search
Show and hide invisible files and package contents
Keep track of recent files and folders in a History menu
Quickly access favorite files via menus and sidebars
Create and modify disk images
Convert disk images to folders and vice versa
Burn and erase CDs/DVDs
Batch rename files
Manage users and groups
Find duplicate and unique files
Archive files with zip and tar
Keep track of the S.M.A.R.T. status of attached hard disks
Delete single files from the trash

It will be released in February, so, bookmark the site and set a reminder for to notify you. :)

the best i could find was this on some guys blog :

This might be something that all the experts here know about already, but I was stumped by it initially, and was happy to figure out a solution. I had an NTSF-formatted Windows XP hard drive in a PC box, and I was too lazy to plug in a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Instead, I pulled the hard drive out of the PC and plunked it into a USB2 enclosure, which I then plugged in to my Mac. I could read the disc, but when I went to Disc Utility to wipe it and reformat it, the option was greyed out.

After some futile searching, I was ready to boot up off of an OS X install disc (as one hint had suggested), but then figured I'd try one more thing -- I ejected the volume, and then, voila, I could format it as an unmounted volume. Easy!

I can now donate the PC to a youth artist group, knowing that the person who gave me the PC in the first place won't have all their data out there in the mean old world. I did a 'write 8 times format' in order to clear the drive. I point this out just in case anyone else decides to do this and accidentally puts a chunk of their personal data out into the world.

it seems pretty solid to me.
But I honestly don't know. I will keep looking anyway.

Yeah, the problem is I don't want to re-format the drive.

Why I need it is, I backed up my mp3s on dvds. But my main computer can't read the dvds it burned but the ibook can (I have no idea why).

What I'm doing now is hooking the external drive up to a computer on the network and transfering them that way. It works but it's slow because the computer doesn't have usb 2:(

But thanks anyway:)

i know what it is. if you get the program toast 6 titanium (easy to download and get a patch for, and I'm willing to upload. just talk to me on AIM)
when you burn the disc it should say on the tab on left hand side

mac format
windows&mac format

otherwise disregard the dvds, hook it up to the computer using migration assistant (found in utilities) plug a firewire cable into the comp and your ibook, restart the mac while holding down t and it should come up as an external hard drive.
otherwise I don't know.

This is a longshot, but does anyone know of a program that lets a mac write to NFTS formatted hard drives.

The problem is, OS X can not write to NTFS 5. General incompatibility. If it's because of the Apple guys being lazy, or Microsoft nor providing specs, no one knows.

As you already found a solution, here some ideas for future data move:

OS X can read and write to FAT32. Maybe reorganize your external drive with a tool like Partition Magic so it has a FAT32 partition for Data exchange with the external drive (with PartitionMagic you do not have to reformat the drive, thus not losing Data)
Hook the drive up to a Hub or Switch with appropiate port (USB or FireWire). Over the network the filesystem does not matter
Alternative to above: Hook the drive up to a network PC, and provide it for network use. The Mac should be able to write to it, hooked up to the same network as the PC.

Hope that helps. :)

OK first off (well secondly since I've posted in this thread already) Safari is lame. I really, really don't like it. I use Firefox, and thats awesome. Not Specifially Mac though so...

EasyWMA - Converts .wma to .mp3 hassle free. Drop and drag. Easy as pie.

The best MSN program I've been able to find for Mac is Mercury Messenger - if anyone can better it, please let me know.

Microsoft Office for OS X is very worth it. Pages is a very bad program (assuming that's the text editor you're talking about) It's basically like notebook on XP, but with image capabilities.

Hey I was wondering if anyone could reccommend some internet security programs and the like. I'm very new to using a Mac and I know that they are virtually untouched by viruses but what about spyware and the like? Anything I should use to make sure it works fine across the whole vast internet?

Be sure to get Little Snitch though. It's a special firewall that allerts you when an application wants to connect to the internet. VERY useful.

I just found OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) - seems like a good set of programs. Included is:

Word Processor
Presentation Program
Mathematical Function Creator
Vector Drawing Tool
Spreadsheet Program
Database Program And it's free! It's still downloading at the moment, so I'm not entirely sure about the useability of the programs, but I will try them all out and post back in a couple of days...

I also found aMSN - a much better MSN program than Mercury, Adium, and a few others. Works pretty much exactly the same as the Windows version, has skins etc. - I haven't figured out how to show my current iTunes song yet, but it's possible.

Unfortunately not. PC emulators are difficult to make, so any normal programmer would want to charge something for it. No, scrap that, would want to charge ALOT for it.

I'm not to sure about os9, but there's a program called "Virtual PC" for OS X and it's bascially the only PC emulator for macs that I am aware of. And it's pricey. Bastards! Q(-_Q)

I have a question/request... I have been looking at getting Cinema 4D for a while now, but I am really not prepared to pay the price that it is. Would anybody be able to make a bootleg copy for me? Maybe upload the .dmg, or burn the CD and post it to me or something...

OK, I'm getting my Mac soon and am in desperate need of a media player for it. I have tried to get along with iTunes on my PC, but we went our seperate ways. I'm so used to Winamp and queueing/playing albums from navigating folders instead.

So if anyone knows of a OS X friendly remedy for this, I'd appreciate it.

Also, this thread will be a godsend when I get my Mac. Thank you to everyone who has posted in it

You could try MacAmp Lite. It was designed as Winamp Clone, but discontinued when iTunes showed up. It runs native in OS X. There was a version that was more feature rich (MacAmp), but it does not run native on OS X. Not cool and convinient.

http://www.macamplite.com/

Or try Audion: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8907

You won't find a lot modern alternatives though, most players I heard of were discontinued around 2003. iTunes is the weapon of choice for almost all Mac users

Transmission/Bits On Wheels
The best torrent software I've used on a Mac. I've tried Azereus, Tomato Torrent and Bits On Wheels, and this is the best I've tried. It's simple and very small, although you can't change thr download directory. Bits On Wheels would be my second choice, since that has more features and works well (The 3D swarm diagram of seeders and peers is a great feature). BOW hasn't been updated in about a year though, which makes me wonder if it's been left alone. Both work on Intel and PowerPC Macs by the way

http://transmission.m0k.org/
http://www.bitsonwheels.com/

Songbird
Although not released for OS X yet, it has been tested on it and it works. Songbird is a multi-platform media player, and heavy contender against iTunes in my opinion. Features include the obvious (Media library, support for almost all media types, skinning, dynamic playlists), as well as intergration with Mozilla Firefox, custom file extensions, the ability to view web pages as playlists and more. I'm really excited for this, hope the OS X version is released soon.

I don't know if it's been listed but Audio Hijack Pro is a great program.

Audio Hijack Pro:
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/

It lets you rip audio from any source, even something playing off of Firefox or Safari. It's great if you want a clip or something, but can only find a stream of it. The free version screws up quality after 10 mins of recording though, so anything longer than 10 mins can't be ripped with the free version. You can always restart it though and record another 10 mins.

EasyWMA - Converts .wma to .mp3 hassle free. Drop and drag. Easy as pie.
I have an old version from when it was still free, if anyone needs it. I think you need to buy it to do anything now.

Adium, Flip4Mac, and Transmission all get recommendations from me. Adium's great for customization, and Flip4Mac allows you to do all sort of crazy stuff with windows media files you couldn't do otherwise. Transmission is light and simple Torrent application.

I've used Firefox over Safari for a long time. I haven't used Safari for a long time, so maybe it's gotten better, but Firefox is way more versatile and compatible with websites. Plus it's got all sorts of extensions and add-ons (these deserve a whole new thread). Also, although it takes longer to start up initially, Firefox seems faster. I downloaded Camino once, but I didn't like how it felt.

Some Apps:
iTunes-LAME - This plugin allows you to easily use the LAME mp3 encoder with iTunes. Hasn't been updated in a long time, but it's still great.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8837

MilkyWay - Lets you preview an image quickly in finder without opening it. Couldn't live without it.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20195

FolderGlance - Let's you navigate folders through the right-click menu. Great.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19114

Steermouse/USB Overdrive are nice too, especially if you have a multibutton mouse. They allow you to assign clicks and modified clicks functions and stuff. Like, I have a middle-click opening a new tab in Firefox or the info pane in iTunes. Little things like that. They make those crappy Mighty Mouses run better on Panther too.

More as I think of them.

After trying many browsers for Mac, I can safely say Firefox is the most unstable. It was prone to crashes more often than Safari and Camino, and even though it is available on multi-OS, it's very clear Mozilla don't care that much for it. Safari with the Saft plug-in is best I think.
