I would recommend either coated ambs over clear ambs or coated emps over clear ambs. You can't go wrong with either combo!!

Depends on your tuning really, if you get the ambs it will be a lot more versatile and you will find a better tuning range...so that might suit u more.

I have coated g1s all around, and I love em....but my only problem is that the volume is a bit too low. they're perfect for playing with myself (which I do quite often, believe me teehee), but once you get a few guitars going, you really lose a lot of the sound unless you really hammer em.

I knew someone was gonna post something about Evans.

Low volume=jazz? You wouldn't see a jazz drummer playing Rudes, perhapes the same rule applies a bit with heads?

Excuse my ignorance, I'm not really up on jazz, it was just an idea.

Yea, G1 coated Evan's are excellent Jazz etc. heads, I love mine. My school uses them for our Jazz set, they really are good heads.

For my metal/hardcore set would G2 coated over G1 clears be good all round for the toms? And what for the snare (Sticking with Evans, I have a good dealer)
Sorry to ask in your thread GhostNote but there are too many head threads to make another!

What do you mean by jazz, Ghostnote?

Jazz from the 50's and 60's - Attack Jack DeJohnette Sig heads or Evans J1 Etched.

Drummers back then use calkskin, or medium Coated heads after calkskin faded out, heads of equal on both sides of the drum. So you have 2 warm, dry heads of the same type on both side. And most guys would wear out the batter and then swap batters with the resonator so you have a thick, coated, worn-out head on the resonator side, and the resonator on the batter.

And, the audience mostly hears the tone that the resonator makes.

Hmmm, it really depends on what type of jazz is played. jazz cant be generalised because there are so many types, you can have loud and soft jazz, i play funk too and the sound you get out of drums can have to be loud or soft. I dunno where the comment about rudes came from??

Try the Evans ST or ST dry for your snare. Both have 2 plies of 7.5 mil and the ST dry has dry vents. Both of those heads are very durable.

calfskin... that was a typo. Current drumheads are imitations of the real calfskin heads that they used to use. It's not practical to use calfskin anymore because it's expensive, and hard to keep in tune inchangin climates.

Oh, sorry, i thought you were talking bout something else, my bad. Yeah, i have some really old calfskin heads but there in poor condition.

If im playing funk aswell, would i be goin for; a bright focused sound, a bright open sound, a warm open sound or a warm focused sound?

dont get genera dry and dont use a 2ply head on ur snare. both are retarded heads. the people who think they like em dont like em. they just think they do.

stick with the tried and true
