You probably have terrible technique.
I have the Peart sticks also. They are Jap. Oak, which is stronger than the more common hickory sticks. I do not know how you managed to break them, and so fast.
Mine are hardly chipping from my rimshots.
Fix the technique.

Maybe your teacher sucks then and doesnt point out mistakes in your technique like he should.
I do rimshots all the time, and my Pearts are spotless.

well try thicker sticks made of harder wood...i would recomend marching sticks but those are no good for set drumming...uhm...i dunno, when hitting hi hat try not to hit witht he stick perpendicular to the edge of the hats, try to make it a more slanted/downward stroke if you're hitting it more sideways...

That doesn't mean anything. Players who have been playing for 5 times that have had to go back and re-learn technique.
What you describe is a technique issue. Pure and simple.

eh, japan oaks can break pretty easily sometimes, but its probably your technique. Stronger sticks will obviously be bigger.

and yeah, no problem man, just watch how your sticks are hitting your cymbals and stuff...obviously the more direct the hit (more extreme of an angle) the more damare your doing to your stick, and obviously how hard/loud/often you play will also effect how long they'll last you....and agian, wood material effects a lot too
vater has some pretty strong sticks. ive only broken 1, they usually just widdle down and i replace them. 5b, 3a, and 8a and 3a nylon are what ive used and still use.

well... don't go for aheads...you'll never break a stick, just cymbals...and if you have money to replace them....well...it would be better spent elsewhere

If you want strong sticks go with the Vic Firth American Classic Hickory Metal sticks. I think thats the thickest stick they make for drumset but you better not have thin cymbals cause they will go through those quick.

It's your technique. end of discussion. If you play a brand new set of sticks and break them within 15mins of playing then there's something deffinately wrong there. Maybe it was a fault in the stick but I doubt it.
Try not to hit hats/cymbals on the very edge. Not only will this chip or break your sticks, it'll also maybe lead to cymbal breakage.
Also try to hit with the tip of the stick and not the shoulder. Not a neccesity but it'll help. I personally play hats and cymbals with the shoulder and all I've experienced is the normal chipping.
Practice your rimshots more. Make sure you're hitting the right part of the rim for a start lol. It can be easy to miss sometimes if you're getting into it, and you can sometimes hit the edge of the rim...

Ive never broke a stick but I play 5Bs and 5As. I got some Vic 7AN for xmas, I havent used them yet but hopefully they wont break. Nice and light though :D

Dude, if this guy can break Peart sig sticks in 15 min he will probably break the 7AN's within like 5 min because they are alot smaller than the Peart sigs.

Ive only ever broken really really cheap sticks ,in heavy usege in like 30mins, due to bad angles of toms and the rim shots i was hitting
Check your technique my dear fellow

I never do rimshots. The only reason my 5Bs broke because it was on of those non drummers, a bassist (Need I say anymore?), trying to impress me by playing really fast. It didnt impress me at all and made me really angry

I never do rimshots. Dynamics arent very important anyway.... That would be like never using bells of your cymbals.

http://www.music123.com/Vater-VPP2-5A-Stick-Pack-And-Free-Stuff-i260792.music, i kinda worded it it like i break sticks like a every week, its maby every mounth and im in a band and we practice 3-4 times a week so i dont think its that bad is it??

play with brushes, then you'll learn that your technique is bad. if you wack away with brushes the same way you play with sticks you wont play well. then you'll learn correct grip and striking.

Alright!
So here's your problem.
(drum roll in the backround)
Technique! Yes techique saves sticks big time. I had your problem a few months back. I relearned how to play with correct technique and now I can do more than before. Also, if you want strong sticks, go for Ahead. No jokes, these sticks are good. Those of you who break cymbals, learn good technique . Aheads don't break cymbals, people break cymbals.

Try those sticks that are on ebay, the ones with the metal holes that look like a flute. The post is in D&P somewhere

Aheads are TOO strong for playing the kit. Thats why they break cymbals so easily.

I don't really crack cymbals and I hit really hard. It's all in technique one sweeping motion when you hit. I'm playing with 2bs too.

Three things, or a combination of them:
Your rim is sharpened like an axe
You're exaggerating the 15 minute thing
The sticks were a defective pair
rohbit
12-28-2005, 06:32 PM
Basically dude, if you can play without your ear plugs on, and without any issues, then it's not a technique issue.
My Hi-hats eat up my sticks, but It took be about a year to go through 3 pairs of PROMARK 5B's... then I realized that my hi-hat was way to high... I used the last pair for a good 5 months after that.

I'm going to say it is technique. Even the lightest sticks shouldn't break in 15 minutes of playing.
and drummer_mp3 don't say stuff like that, aheads is a terrible suggestion. Your post was absolutly ridiculous.
