As some of you know about my carvin, I now have to take it back to NJ from AZ. I have a hard case, I will be locking it and possibly duct taping it all around to keep it closed, but after seeing the baggage handlers treat my stuff like dead babies on the way here, IDK if I should mail it or now.

I know many of you have attented basslines, how did that work on planes?

Yeah, you can have it as carry-on luggage.

Now, you'd trust a postman more than a baggage handler?

its in a big hard case.

I dunno about postmen, never seen post. I dunno if I wanna carry it on, I already have a carry on and me my mother and father are going to be sitting together, and between me and my father its a bit of a squeeze.

If it can fit in the overhead storage compartment, it can go with you.

Bassinator89

what are the dimensions of the overhead storage?

Buy another seat, just for the bass.

It should fit in the overhead compartment. I took my bass with me in hard shell case when I went down to Florida last year. Otherwise they told me if it wasn't going to fit that they could just put it int he little closet up front. It should fit though.

Yes, if you are on a larger plane, you can store it in the coat closet. Smaller planes are where you'll run into problems as they don't have large overhead bins and don't have coat closets. In these cases, you're really stuck as there are no first class seats for extra room and really no room to keep it with you in your seat. Sometimes they'll have those little green tags which they'll put on your bag as you walk on the plane and later store it in the luggage compartments. Be prepared for both situations (duct tape might be a little much though). It's *nearly* impossible to fit a bass in an overhead storage compartment so you'll probably be relying on the coat closet. Call your airline ahead of time and they should be able to give you specifics of the plane.

Haha... good idea! :thumb:

I'd stuff your case with stuff that will absorb the shock of being thrown around and lock the case as well (most cases have locks on them... hopefully you do)...let someone look at it before you lock it up if that's possible, so they don't go tearing it open later.

dont lock it.

security WILL cut the locks, and possibly even the lock staples, to get in the case.

use wire-ties (or zipties) to keep it closed instead. you know, the plastic ones that ratchet tight. the security people will replace these, and they atleast stop anyone from randomly opening your case and grabbing the bass.

1. get bubble wrap and wrap it around potentially fragile areas
2. they might allow you to store it behind the seats that sit against the dividers within the plane
3. check with the particular airline you are flying as to their rules and regs regarding such a senario
4. pray.................

Between your legs, or leaned up against the window if you get the window seat...

Lots and lots of bubble wrap.

FenderJazz

I dont think you'll have bubble rap, but if your far from home, then you obviously have dirty clothes with you! I bought my bass while visiting my sister and I filled the gig bag up with dirty clothes.

I dont remember what happened on the plane rides though.

Why don't you call the airline and ask about it?

Spazzout22
12-27-2005, 02:45 PM
I've always just checked my bass. You ductape it shut, they usually just wrap it back up for you after they've gone through it. Also, if you're gonna check it, pack the whole thing full of clothes. You wanna give your bass as much support as you can. De-tune one or two whole steps. That's about all you need. Your hardcase will get some dings in it, that's for sure.

yeah if you were on aprivate jet... a hard case is way over the carry on size limit...

I'd say mail it... Plus ppl in airport(especially in newark) would
jack the bass....

isn't the airport responsible if something happens to?

Well it depends how much the bass is worth.

I am pretty sure you can carry it on and store it in the closet thing. My mom has had to carry her acoustic on planes and done it like that I think.

No way would a hardshell fit in an overhead locker with the locker door closed.

Just sit with it or sit it near you or something.

I heard you have to untune it when you fly on planes, because differences in air pressure or something????

I know INSIDE the cabin, airpressure is kept constant, but I dunno, that's what I heard.

i beleive the rule is the musical instrument has to be less than 41 inches long or its no longer carry on

Definitely not. You untune it completely (make the strings super loose, or take them off) because the string tension can add on to the damage done to the bass if it is to fall or something. It could be the difference between your neck snapping or not, and **** like that.

just called.

52 inches combined length width and height for carry on.
no liability on damaged items, only missing.
they will replace duct tape on it if it needs to be opened.
if it's locked it'll be ripped open if search is needed.
closet is for first class and only usable if its not full.

So, I can check it, or mail it. I hear bad things about mail but I can insure it, it will cost alot more though...If its damaged I could always say it was missing...advice?

I don't think that will work. I'd de-tune it like mentioned before and stuff it full of something. Anything to soften the blow of it being throw around. Or... FedEx it and put insurance on it.

Drive it home yourself?

Low_End_Communications
12-28-2005, 05:44 PM
First off: Do yourself a favor, and buy a nice flight case. In the end, this will be the most worthwhile investment you can make for yourself and your instrument.

Secondly: Do NOT detune your strings to the point of nearly falling off. When you buy a bass online, they NEVER, EVER DO THIS!!! I don't know where that idea came from. Your neck, without tension, will need a few hours to adjust to string tension when you get it where it's going.

Bassinator89
12-28-2005, 06:38 PM
Well I just shipped it DHL. 1st off to drive it home...well I can't drive :p 2nd, I detuned it, the strings aren't falling off, but there isn't much tension. Will it need an adjustment on the truss rod when it gets home? or Just has to get used to it? Well...bye bye Carvin see you around the 5th, on the new year...It's kinda like a double present though, I got it, now I get to get it again! Well, hope for th best. I also put 1k insurance on it! :p

What aircraft were you flying on?

jollygiantchris
12-29-2005, 01:53 AM
if you check your bass it should not be opened by security at a US airport...if you carry it on it should/is supposed 2 be checked and every airline has different rules about carrying on instruments some airlines require that it be in a soft sided case etc. and baggage handlers do throw your luggage because they have to move several thousand bags a day and the average weight of a domestic checked bag is about 50 lbs and for an international flight its around 65 lbs. in addition to the weight the ergonomics of placing each bag individually with care can and will result in fun injuries like knee and shoulder tears. hf on your trip

Delta Airlines if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure it was a 727, so nothing huge but also not a tiny plane.
